First of all, this thread isn't about Kris (NOT Kerry) Jenkins or Alan Faneca, both of whom are proven starters who can excel, especially in Faneca's case; those were great acquisitions. But I'm a bit puzzled by the Pace and Woody signings. Woody has only started 5 games at the position we will be paying him (he projects to be our RT, if only for the moment), yet we're giving him one of the more lucrative contracts for an offensive linemen in recent memory. Pace, meanwhile, has certainly shown plenty of potential, but he has had only one year in which he has started, and between injuries and what not, I don't understand how this contract is justified. Now, I know plenty of you are not only OK with the previously mentioned signings, but endorse them, as well. I'd like to hear why, as I don't see why Pace was so sorely needed (especially with some good OLB talent in the draft) or why we couldn't have gotten a true RT in Olivea or Williams (or a cheaper option in the draft). A final note: Woody is to be praised for being so active this offseason; I'm not arguing with Tangini's philosophy as a whole but merely these two signings.
Please read the final note again. I included it specifically so I wouldn't have to put up with dismissive posts like this one.
Who cares if we overpaid...we got the players the FO wanted and they did it within the cap. I'll take good players over cap space any day.
This is all part of Tanny's 3-phase business plan: 1. Overpay unproven free agents 2. ??????? 3. Profit
what constitutes overpaying? if you ask me, EVERYBODY'S OVERPAID! look at the saleries these back up QB'S are making!. collins, at 3million a year! thats overpaid! the guy has hardly dirtied his uniform his whole career!. let's see how our boys play this season, then we can say if we overpaid.
Jesus Christ, make up your fuckin mind people. Was it your money? Is this why you're taking it so personally? Just shut the hell up. Don't watch the Jets, i'll feel better knowing another douchbag fan has moved on.
I am with Penning10toColes on this one. I can at least see where he is coming from. Listening to analysis of these signings, I have learned that Pace showed potential but is slightly unproven (I thought this before we even signed him), and that Jenkins can have a motivation problem. Also, we know that Woody is not a true RT, but it seems as though they are giving him the spot... Just think about this, are we paying these players relative to where their talent lines up with the entire NFL, or are we paying them relative to where they rank talent-wise versus the other free agents?
I think some people remember when we tried to go cheap last time on the DL, can you say Kimo? You can't get talent and not pay, and some times you have to take a chance on a player.
Here's my policy on such issues: Realistically im just an average joe fan and the money being spent isnt mine, so I dont really care how much they pay free agents. I just want the team to win. Hopefully Tannenbaum got the right players, regardless of money.
Right. An "overpayment" now will be a bargain 2 years down the road. With the cap potentially gone in 2 years, if that's what it takes to grab the guys we like into the fold, so be it. With that in mind, I don't think we overpaid either in the least.
It is only over-paying if you don't get production. For instance, if it takes us to game 6 to register our first sack, we can't stop the run, we can't generate any consistent running game, and our QB still is getting pancaked, then it was definitely over-paying. This would translate to: Kris Jenkins playing like Pris Jenkins Faneca playing like Fannyneca Pace playing like he needs a Pacemaker Woody playing limp
