Watching Tannenbaum fill out the roster, I'm starting to get the feeling that the Jets may be considering Ryan in the first round or more likely, Flacco in the 2nd. If he gets Woody, he will have a starting offensive line. (Hopefully) If he gets Pace, he's got an edge pass rusher, lessening the need for Gholston (I still want him) If he gets Eugene Wilson, he's got the safety he needs. That leaves a CB partner for Revis (Talib?) and what....maybe a QB. Clearly, the media and many of the fan base don't believe the Jets have a QB between Penny and Kellen (I disagree), but maybe the Jets want to hedge their bets in case Clemens does not pan out. You may disagree, but it seems like Tannenbaum is really going out of his way to flesh out the roster giving him freedom to take either the best player available or another QB of the future.
I think QB is at the bottom of the needs list. Tannenbaum drafted Clemens so hes obviously not ready, after 7 games as starter in 08, to say that Clemens isnt any good and to draft another quarterback in Round 1 or 2. Especially considering the obvious need for a pass rushing OLB, a starting cornerback opposite Revis and a possible upgrade over either Ellis or Coleman at DE.
I kinda agree it makes me think they are going to take a skilled position player first. Mcfadden or Ryan. The only QB i see them drafting before round 4 or 5 is Ryan which is still a long shot... but hes the only so called "garantee" as a franchise QB i see so thats why they would do that.
Tanny always says before every draft that he wants to fill needs in FA to go BPA in the draft.. Unless Ryan slies(which he wont), there's no way the BPA at 6 is gonna be a QB. We're likely looking at DMAC.
I hope the Jets don't consider Ryan in the first round. I think he's the least talented, least accomplished first round passer to come around in quite some time. I think he's right up there with Alex Smith, who was a weak armed system guy with a big brain. Ryan lacks both elite physical schools and elite numbers. If you're going to invest big money in a quarterback, you'd better have one of the two. I don't love our quarterback situation, but I think with an upgraded roster the guys who kept us in nearly every game last year can make significant strides in the win column this year. -X-
If anything, we're going to be in position to take a CB. Poteat is a stop-gap player who's first on the depth chart opposite Revis right now. I still think we take Gholston if he's there, but it's possible we trade up for one of the Longs.
So potentially we'll have Jones, Washington, Chatman, and Dmac on the roster? Seems like a bit of an overload.
I think the Jets will likely take a QB in the 3rd or 4th round if the value is right. Flacco would be a good example of somebody who might be there and worth a pick. Josh Johnson and Kevin O'Connell are also both worth a 4th round shot if they're there.
I cant see spending the type of money they have and bringing in veteran pro bowl lineman on both sides of the ball and then picking Ryan after you just picked a qb in the second round a couple years ago. The one thing you cant do as a gm is "chase" a position...you make a mistake and just keep chasing it (not saying they made a mistake..but they would be admitting a huge mistake if Ryan were picked) Just look at the Lions and their drafts of about 5 wide receivers over the past 5 years. Now McFadden to me is a huge possibility. I like Jones...and with a better line he could rush for 1400 yards. But when you are unsettled at the qb spot or have a qb who limits the field...a breakaway tough back like him might be the answer. Its seems through free agency almost every position on defense will be answered except a pass rusher from whatever position. So you are left with Gholston or McFadden if you dont trade down. One of those guys will be Jets.
I'm not advocating a QB, I'm just saying they might be thinking that way. If they do go that way, it's more likely they do it in the 2nd round with a guy like Flacco.
In that scenario I doubt Chatman would make it past TC... One of the benefits of filling needs before the draft is to go BPA at your pick, as well as creating TC competition. Jones, Dmac and Washington would bee comparable to LT, Turner and Sproles.
I hear you...Im just wondering if they do that they basically are admitting they made a huge mistake with KC. KC would have to interpret it that way. I mean if Pennington is your QB....then KC is your back up and now you have a pretty high pick as your 3rd string qb. If KC is your qb, then you have a veteran behind him and even if you cut/trade Pennington, now your roster had two raw qb's with no veteran backup. Im not saying you are wrong...but if they do that..then its a huge message about KC.
If we are not looking at pure BPA, I would think a Pass rushing OLB, WR, or CB would be our highest grade of need. I doubt front office is ready to throw in a the towel on Clemens. He was thier guy, started a few games behind an O-line they have felt the need to dump a ton of cash into to fix. The offseaon seems more like fixing things to give him and the rest of the offense a chance to make plays as opposed to positioning for the draft.
Similar to waht I was thinking. If they draft a QB, it sends a huge message that they royally botched the pick on KC.
I couldnt agree more with the latter part of your post. However, I'd take McFadden at 6 if available. Furthermore, who's to say we aren't trading up excess picks to get Gholston as well? Draft day will be interesting.
And the bottom line behind that is if you did f up..and lets face it, Mangini has a pretty good idea if this kid can still become a good qb, then you make the move. You cant not make the move because of the way it is interpreted. I would be pretty shocked if they have come to that decision already. If they have, then its Pennington or it needs to be addressed. I totally agree, draft a qb in the first 3 rounds and thats a pretty clear message. No teams stockpile QB's.
