The Jets are overpaying Faneca. That being said, it was still the right move for three reasons; 1-Many of the top potential free agents were hit with the franchise tag increasing the competition for the top tier players that were left on the open market. 2- Not only was he one of the top rated free agents out there, He fit our biggest need, the O-line. 3- We had the cap space available.
Is it really that stupid though? much like what is happening with baseball and pitchers the market for olineman money wise just isn't the same as it used to be When Minnesota signed Steve Hutchinson to gain what is probably one of the best olines in the game while seeing the effect that Hutch's loss caused the Seahawks, it kills this stupid theory. You can and should improve your oline anyway possible
Many years ago, we were blasted for overpaying for center Kevin Mawae. Turned out to be a good deal in the long run. As for sports writers in general... Who cares. If they actually knew what they were talking about, they would be working for the NFL not writing about it.
The object is to spend $116 million a year and win. Not spend $116 million and lose. The $116 million a year (so far) is a given. Winning or losing is NOT.
Oh he's partially right. But this is a move we desperately need to make. He brings leadership, talent and stability to an exremely talented but inexperienced side of the line. This is unfortunately what the market hs become for guards..cause lets face it...there arent alot of good ones. Even at 31 I'd still put Faneca in the top 5 at his position...and we desperately needed him to take the next step as a franchise. 1. Hutchinson 2. Snea 3. Faneca 4. Watters 5. Mankins
I do think it's a boatload of money to tie up in a guard but in our case we did a bad job keeping our good young OL talent and needed to do it. If we had been able to hang on to Randy Thomas and K-Mack by giveing them decent money and not letting them get to their walk year we would never have been in this position. MN didn't make the playoffs last year with a great OL and one of the great running attacks in the NFL.
Why does everyone who has an opinion against the Jets hate them? on other boards fans think Prisco loves us and is a Jet fan. he makes good points, we spent ALOT of money. We got a couple of really good players but it cost us a ton to get them, that does need to be factored in.
The way the market has turned to, we would have to pay a ton in FA anyway, so it really isn't overpaying if the market calls for it.
For Faneca I agree But I don't get the $20 mil guarantee for Jenkins after giving up a high 3rd and 5th. We are better and I am happy, I am not usually big on FA but we have cap room and alot of needs and at least we got 2 guys who can be top players at their positions.
someone should tell him that we have developed a guard - on the right side...... i have no problem splurging at one guard position and being conservative at the other. jil
He's on the local FOX SPORTS radio here (JAX) and if you think his sportsline articles are bad.......... :breakdance: He's a total knucklehead, who thinks the NFL should be like college, and has boner for"flash" or "skill" positions only....... I can't listen. I'm glad I don't have a long commute anymore.
the jets HAVE to spend alot of money to get these guys...its just the history of the team...the only thing that will cure it is winning consistently and stability off the field. jil
They used to say that "he's got them by the nose of their cadillacs" about the head of IT&T. But the thing that a 2008 NFL player understands is money. There is a quid pro quo for Jenkins and that guarantee. No more turd talk. Dominate or else no more pay days from anybody.
I dont know. Im unsure if I like the Faneca signing. the jets pony up $40 million, but god fucking forbid if they give pete kendell... a good viable, responsible active guard... a fricking million dollars. how is this any different then signing Cmartin to an 8year deal? And that bit us in the ass. This guy better be able to handle triple coverage without a fricking problem for this money. the left side has ZERO fucking excuse now.
The Jets probably think signing Faneca will help make left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold, two players entering their third years, better players. Maybe so, but the money is outrageous. Who is this guy? A signing that improves three positions is "outrageous!" Which guard is it that he'd like us to develop? As we're developing our quarterback, as well, mind you. You got to have huge rocks in your head to say this after the last two major free agent guard signings, Eric Steinbach to the Browns and Steve Hutchinson to the Vikings, paid off in DIVIDENDS. You think the offensive coordinators in Minnesota and Cleveland think they got screwed? Hell no!
If we don't fix the entire OL (and that means probably another RT and a roving offensive lineman capable of filling in where necessary), the stunts will just move to the other side. The ENTIRE OL needs to work together every down as a single integrated unit. It's not about one its about five as one. And now we're on the way!
