Tom Rock says we get a pick this year for Vilma http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/ Just got off the phone with Mike Tannenbaum on a conference call. He said that the Jets aren't getting a conditional pick in 2009 from the Saints for Vilma. He said the deal is for a solid pick THIS YEAR in 2008 and, based on Vilma's production, possibly another pick in 2009. And it sounds like that second one could be a third-rounder. Well, that changes things a bit.
Now that is a HORSE of another color. This makes the Jenkins trade even better, which is what I originally thought when I heard "NYJ trades JV for draft pick". We're still into the draft. That's amazing. But sign Faneca. Focus.
The Jets received a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2008 draft. That's theirs and they will use it or trade it or whatever they want to do with it in two months. If Darren McFadden is around in the fourth round, he'll be a Jet. Now, if Vilma reaches certain playing time levels AND he winds up signing an extension with the Saints (remember, Vilma didn't renegotiate so he's a free agent after the 08 season), then the Jets will get either a second or a third rounder in 2009 but they would have to sort of pay back the original value of the deal by giving the Saints a fourth-round pick.
This should make everyone feel a little better about the return on Vilma. It certainly makes me happier.
So basically if Vilma sucks, we end up with a 4th which is fair, and if he's good we end up with a 2nd or 3rd so the value of the player we get is higher. Fair deal.
I for one am alot happier about it. We do get a pick this year, and if all goes well and Vilma resigns with the saints, we move a 4th next year for a 3rd or possibly second? Very good value at that point. Gratz to Tanny
The Jets already have an extra #4 in 2009 from the Skins, so if Vilma has a good year and signs an extension, the Jets could get a 2 or 3 and have to give back a #4. Mike T is very creative. Now lets deal Drob for the 3&5 we gave up for Jenkins
Yeah if we can get a 3rd for Robertson and an additional pick this would just have the makings of an unreal offseason. So now we have a 1st, 2nd, and two fourths. If we can trade from the 6th pick to the middle of the 1st and get an additional 2nd round pick this year that would be great.
I found this article on scout.com explaining the compensation of the Vilma trade. http://nyj.scout.com/2/733412.html Clarification on Vilma compensation By Dan Leberfeld Posted Feb 29, 2008 The reports earlier regarding the compensation the Jets received from the Saints for Jonathan Vilma were wrong. It was reported that the Jets received a 2009 fourth round pick that could turn into a third rounder based on playing time. This is wrong. What the Jets received was a 2008 fourth round pick that could turn into a 2009 second or third rounder based on Vilma reaching certain incentives and signing a contract extension. If the Jets end up getting one of those 2009 picks, they would then send a 2009 fourth round pick to the Saints.
No kidding. If Vilma walks and is a UFA, we got a 4th for a guy would whould have been gone. If he resignes with the Saints, we get to move a 4th for a Second or Third rounder depending on conditions. Not an easy deal to complete and much better value than first reported. Mike T is proving that he is not jsut a bean counter for sure. The more Info that comes out, the more sure I am of this FO and coaching staff. Gotta love it.
so what that basically means is that it is Vilma for a 4th that could turn into Vilma and a 4th for this years 4th and possibly next year 2nd rounder, well at least it is better than what they were saying originally
