that?s basically, what i wanted to say. But to be able to open the lanes, and be there when the QB steps up, you need to be a good passrusher. Not a typical rusher with speed and moves, but a powerfull one, who can get into the backfield quickly within a 5 foot wide rushinglane, going right throu the OLman who blocks him.

I don't have a problem with that. This is evidenced by the fact I didn't respond harshly.
My post would have been effective without the quote from 2004. I just happened to have that book handy and looked at the Williams info. What was put forth in that quote likely still holds. There is no real evidence that Williams has a high football IQ.
Furthermore, he went to Arkansas State.

I didn't see every Packers game, but I certainly saw enough of them. I think Williams has looked better than he really is due to the talent around him on that line. He played the under tackle position and the other regular starters were Kampman, Pickett, and Jenkins. Gbaja-Biamila, Harrell, and Montgomery were the substitutes. Those are all good players. Kampman was great and was my choice for 1st team All-Pro honors at end along with Jared Allen. Maybe Williams could play end in a 3-4 defense. I don't know. I don't want the Jets to try to find out. Spend money on a player who definitely can play a certain position as opposed to a player who could maybe play a certain position. The Jets are not in position to experiment. Mangini will be entering his 3rd season and after 2007's 4-12 disaster this regime has to have success in 2008.

Dwayne Gordon and James Farrior were pretty good in the 3-4 of 1997. The Lewis-Cox-Jones-Phifer 3-4 LB corps of 1999 and 2000 was better.

Probably the most frustrating aspect of the 3-4 is the difficulty in finding the correct fitting personnel for it. Not only does the player have to have the physical size, but all the other very specific qualities to succeed. Half of me wishes we would switch back to 4-3 because its a helluva lot easier to get players in that system. Not to mention the obvious fact that the PATS this season had the MOST difficulty playing 4-3s (Baltimore, Philly, NY Giants).

Baltimore plays a 46...and actually with 3 linemen and 4 LBs it looks like a 3-4.

And just...stop with the "back to the 4-3" stuff...just because our base is a 3-4 doesn't mean we stick ONLY to the 3-4. This team shows about a million different fronts, which is what a 3-4 allows you to do. In todays NFL versatility and confusion are a must for a team to be successful, and the 3-4 allows much more flexibility than the 4-3.

Look around...the Ravens, Pats, Chargers, Cowboys, and Steelers are 5 of the top 10 D's in the league and all use a significant amount of 3-4. Meanwhile besides the Jaguars and Vikings...what dominant 4-3s are there in this league? The Jaguars and Vikings have 4 of the most rare players in the NFL...2 dominant starting DTs a piece. How is that easier to find and build than a 3-4? Because the 3-4 NT is so hard to find we should quit?

You line him up at DE & can also rotate him at NT on passing downs.

I was very much in favor of getting this guy. I know most of the questions were if this guy fit the 3-4. Looks like Phil Savage & Romeo Crennel think so. Browns just signed him & they play the 3-4. Steinbach last year.......this Cleveland team has been signing a ton of FAs the past couple of years to huge $$ deals. They are showing the money out there. I guess I must to grips w/all the knocks on Woody Johnson.

Corey Williams' six-year contract with the Browns is with $38 million and includes $16.3 million in guarantees.

It's nearly a million per year less and a whopping $8.25 million in fewer guarantees than the deal Oakland gave Tommy Kelly, which is drawing laughs around the NFL. Wiliams will be the Browns' left end this season.

Why is the Tommy Kelly deal drawing laughs from the NFL? I was listening to ESPN analysts breaking down the Kelly contract...they had no idea who Tommy Kelly was. They were talking about him like he never started a game.

And wow...nice signing by the Browns IMO. I think they'll be happy.

Because the Kelly contact was HUGE. Especially for a guy who torn his ACL late October & was lost for the 2007 season. That guy is now the highest paid DT in the league. Hasnt even made the Pro-Bowl once. Thats probably why its a laugher ---- I am guessing.

Well the ACL thing does make it kind of stupid...but he's been their best DL player since '04 (well Burgess too).

Plus he's extremely versatile as he's played everything from 4-3 DE and DT to 3-4 DE.

I mean the NFL's been handing out some ridiculous contracts as a whole lately...
