Final Look at Jet Priorities in FA With the clock ticking to midnight - here's my take on the FA situation for the Jets: 1) Faneca is obviously the key piece to the offseason puzzle. Seems the Jets are interested in a big way. Can they sign him? -If Faneca does not end up in Green - then the Jets still need Oline help: Jacob Bell or Jake Scott would be the other choices - both younger than Fanceca, but not 4x pro bowlers...none of the RT choices thrill me...draft one or sign one who gets cut...or both. 2) We need a WR - especially if the Coles contract causes a problem - and Bernard Berrian is the top WR (not counting Pennington's friend Randy Moss). I personally wouldn't spend big bucks on Berrian, so I'd be more inclined to explore... -Robert Ferguson - finally 100% off a knee in 2006. I like Bryant Johnson - but he's not a speed guy. 3) Edge Rusher like Justin Smith but can he play 3-4 DE or OLB? A less expensive option might be... -Calvin Pace, the former #1 pick whose come into his own. If we do trade Vilma how about Landon Johnson or Boss Bailey in the middle? gg
True, I'm hoping the Jets can get Faneca in the building and sign him before getting on a private plane ala Antoine Winfield and getting stolen out from under us. Man was I pissed when that happened.
Faneca- I too believe that we already have him locked up. We're talking about one of the top 5 elite Guards in the NFL who WILL help get brick to an elite level. Calvin Pace- Will bring Additional size and pass rushing ability to the LB corps Shaun Rogers- I think Rogers is a better fit at NT than Jenkins as he has a bigger frame...I als think the Lionsare alot more desperate for Vilma than Carolina is. Eugene Wilson- I think we may quietly sign this guy. He is the smart, dependable no nonsense Safety we need next to Rhodes. Rob Morris- I think this would be an absolutely fantastic move..and could com cheap. Morris has been playing in a scheme that doesnt fit him for years. He's a big strong Lb who's great at the point of attack. He was instrumental in improving the Colts Run D last year. He just got released..and you pair him w/ Harris inside..and that's just nasty. 2nd round pick- I too believe D rob goes to denver for a # 2.
I like your additions with Wilson and Morris. There are a few ILB's that could show some interest to us in FA. Morris is on the downside of his career but could be good depth. I still feel we need to draft a ILB. Or somehow also make a play for Landon Johnson. Youth?
You need more than that not to burst your bubble. Not signing Pace and praying Gholston drops to us if a big risk. We need to sign Pace and draft BPA. I agree Gholston is the guy to get, but I am worried he wont drop to us now. By biggest worry is though that you truly think no one else knows about Nicks? There has to be some other guys on the list for RT because there is no guarantee that Nicks will be there. Youth?
I thought about this as well but after digging up this information I believe Coles will not go anywhere. http://www.fanballnews.com/player_notes.php?league=nfl With Coles/Cotchery/Stuckey/Smith we are pretty solid at 4 wide. I feel they do need to draft someone maybe in say the 3rd or 4th round who can compete with these guys. WR isnt our strongest area but it is not our weakest. Stuckey was a big loss last year. Youth?
If the NYJ renegotiates DRob's contract, we would save a bundle -- then we'd have enough for two - three FAs and the draft. But -- for sure we need to keep DRob.
I agree with everyone who quoted this cause it looks like a realistic plan, or even Cherilus if Nicks is gone. There are plenty of OT's in this draft and to not get a quality one by early in the second round is unlikely. Then the needs left would be WR, LB, CB and rounds 3,4,5 can go like this.. 3. Beau Bell ILB 4. Adrian Arrington / Adarius Bowman WR 5. Owen Schmidt FB/ short yardage 6. Jonathan Zenon CB 7. Erik Ainge QB
just saw Jacksonville and Detroit may be doing a straight up trade, Jenkins for Rogers, if it's true then we lose out again. I hope this is not a repeat of last year's free agency period.
That would be an awkward trade no? I mean I understand how each player could use a change of scenery, but what does that really do to help each team out? Sounds like posturing to me.
Everything about an offseason is a risk, what if we give Calvin Pace big money and he sucks, because we sign him we pass up Gholston and he becomes a star. There is a Very deep ot class so picking one up in the draft should not be hard. IMO you get a guard in FA and then you EITHER sign a DL or CB.
Sounds like as much posturing as the Jets talking to Jax for Stroud and Carolina for Jenkins. But they will both have an immediate void to fill and it might work out for both.
Does anyone think we will sign anyone tonight? I'm just about to go to beddy byes and don't want to miss the fun.
