From Today's Star Ledger Dave Hutchinson writes... "The Jets are said to be eyeing Ohio State LB/DE Vernon Gholston with their sixth pick overall in the April draft. Gholston, 6-2, 258 pounds, had a team-record 14 sacks last season. In a 3-4 scheme, NFL types feel he can play from a stand-up position or with his hand on the ground." http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/1204090565125670.xml&coll=1
I really want him, but it is a win win, because if he is taken in the top 5 then an elite player will fall to us, maybe we can stock pile if someone wants to jump up bad enough, there are many good options here, but like I said before, he seems like a playmaking stud that our defense really needs...
HE is a beast. He will be one of the most physically impressive guys in the NFL next year and also fast as hell. I really hope he is who we get. I woudn't want anyone else at all. except chris long but that isn't happening.
BTW: I just want to throw this out there....Mario Williams' biggest knocks were that he looked like he wasn't trying at times in college and that he lacked a deep pass rush repoitore. Those are the same knocks on Gholston...not that he's a Williams-esque athlete or talent, but just to show that the knocks on ridiculously talented prospects are always way overblown. Here's a post I've seen a million times against Gholston: So...you're going to throw away his production in school, mention you haven't seen much of him, bring up the now infamous bowl game (where appearantly all he did was stand on the field), and throw out a tidbit that may or may not even be true....? It's like people are looking for reasons not to like the guy. Now, do I think he's the perfect prospect? No, I think he's going to have problems in coverage and he'll probably looked lost at times in such a complicated D. BUT, his skill (pass rushing) is not only at an elite level, but he has very good NFL measurables, elite college production to go with it, and it's one of the most valuable skills in the league to have.
Why is there even a debate? If anything, we should be very concerned that he may not make it to us at No.6.
Here's another view of Gholston that I posted elsewhere: Maybe this just suggests he needs to learn the ins and outs of a 3-4 backer, or maybe it means that he's too musclebound to work in space. Or maybe it means nothing at all and we're all just overdissecting the top picks.
I tend to agree with your assesment of him, but if he can turn into our version of James Harrison from the steelers then I would be more than happy. Both are extrememly strong for thier size and can come with speed or power off the edge. Exactly what our D needs.
ap wire: Gholston just removed his name from nfl consideration when he instead signed with the american ballet institute, his real passion.
Anyone else surprised at how open the Jets have been about their targets... I figured we'd get zero info until things actually went down.
Indeed. I remember watching Warren Sapp slip through the top of the draft because he smoked weed. As if that mattered.....Kyle Brady....groan.... If this kid is there and we don't take him, we'd be nuts. He's a top athlete, and a good football player. Draft the guy, and fit him into the system somehow. Our only pass rush last year seemed to come from O-linemen falling backwards by accident. Even if this guy just came in on 3rd down for end blitzes, he'd be an upgrade.
i agree the rams could very well take him, and its starting to look more and more like chris long will be the #1 choice. so if they're both gone that means either Ellis, Dorsey or DMC will be available for us. (Jake Long won't get passed KC) I honestly haven't even looked into Dorsey that much because until recently I didn't think we had a chance at him, but if we end up with Shaun Rogers we might not wanna take him there. If DMC falls to us I'm pretty confident we could get both of Dallas's first rounders. Was there any thought as to whether Ellis could play DE in our scheme?
