I think not getting on board is pouting and I don't think he was on board. He is too talented to play the way he was playing. His job is different from ours in that respect, you can't hide it. I appreciate you voiceing your disagreement in a tolerant way, though. One of the few on the boards who can do it.
The Jets defense better improve next season if this move happens. I'm not a huge fan of the 3-4 Mangini has been using, but I'd rather stick with it rather than force another system. Jettisoning the two years of progess (albeit very little) on the defensive side and forcing the players to learn ANOTHER defensive system would be a trainwreck. Either way, this trade will more or less define Mangini's tenure here. If Vilma leaves are returns to 2004 form and the Jets defense continues to blow chunks, there will be a lot of angry fans. I know I'm looking for big improvements from the defense in Year 3 and I don't think thats an unreasonable expectation.
vilma is the man it sucks it didn't work out with the 3-4. I think he is awesome and I hope he does ok somewhere but we shouldn't give him away unless we get a 2nd rounder but with the inkury that is a stretch
I thought the last 8 games they were a much improved D. Once Harris got in and Revis caught his stride. Rhodes played better as did the new safety and Puha. If we upgrade the Dline we can be nasty, I see 3 potential probowlers right now in Revis, Harris and Rhodes.
but does that mean that vilma should be traded? When vilma got hurt we had eric barton in, instead of vilma. IMO, barton hasn't shown anything to warrant him being better than vilma. The reason harris was drafted was to help vilma. He was brought in to play next to vilma and possible create a great, young LB core. Vilma never played next to harris. Harris has already deadlocked a starting spot next year and if vilma stays, which i am all but assuring will happen, we can see how good vilma can be with a very good 3-4 Lb next to him. And right now, the jets have the option of keeping vilma and trying it out for another year, or getting what? a third rounder for him? personally i think it is much more worth it to keep him and see how well he does now that there are more players around him.
You are being impulsive about your opinion on his situation. It sounds like a knee-jerk reaction. For soemone who is pronouncing The Answer as to why 51 behaves as he does, you havent even mentioned whether and how his injury affected him- mostly because you dont even know how long it was really bothering him, and you omitted any mention of his feelings towards the HC, which may also play a part. i think Mangina is a d1ck and a douche from the belicheat tree, and wouldnt be surprised if several guys and potential FAs know they dont want to play for him. His numbers really didnt go down in 2006, so your ASSUMPTIONS that he wasnt happy about that is most likely off-base. Just writing the whole thing off to "pouting" is a superficial explanation that underestimates his level of professionalism and character. But this is a message board, so people can be as obtuse or impulsive as they want. -- As far as some players showing their feelings- football is a game of emotion. Miami players know this, the really good ones play from the heart and make their talent shine. the dan Morgans, Irvins, Vilmas, Ray Lewises, Sean Taylor (RIP), the list goes one and on. Ed Reed- maybe the best of them all, probably plays the most under control of any great Cane I have ever seen. So, knowing this, I dont hold it against football players when they show emotion, be it positive or negative. It is honest. And football is a game of emotion.
Vilma is one of my favorite Jets, however I am not sure if he is the right fit for our current defense and would probably take an early second rounder for him.
Plus we don't know who we are going to pick up in FA/draft. A big NT and pass rusher will help the MLB alot. Why Harris did better than Vilma did remains to be seen , injury or whatever the reason , he looked better. With a fit Vilma and a fit Harris and hopefully some new help on the line we should have a very decent core. I hope this is all just hot air and smoke.
If we trade him it better be nothing less than pick #45 from Detroit, id still like to see him and Harris in the middle but if he doesnt fit he doesnt fit.
Vilma is gone ... For a team that tries to mirror the 18-1 Patriots, keeping things close to the vest is a priority. My gut feeling, if the organization makes such a move as to "let Jon Vilma shop for a trade" they are already saying goodbye. They've already decided that Harris will start alongside someone cheaper and probably "more suited" to the system. Jon Vilma, he should be excited, this almost guarantees a Pro Bowl appearance for another team in the next 2 years.
Vilma a goner? Manweenie a boner. To me, the departure of Jonathan Vilma will be just one more sad, sorry indication that Manweenie is the NFL's worst coach. Manweenie came to the team with his own, weird agenda. He imposed a defensive system that did not fit the personnel he inherited. Now he's going to blame the players so he doesn't get fired. Yes, it looks like he's going to trade away our best players (L. Coles, J. Vilma, etc.). I just wish Mr. Johnson and Johnson had the balls to fire Manweenie!
Great post! Look forward to reading more cerebral comment from you. You have in my opinion read this situation correctly. A couple years ago Vilma was the face of the Jets and now some are shopping him. It makes my stomach queasy thinking about him in another uniform reaking havoc. This guy is a star. Let him shine a Jet uniform. Please.
I mean. Did I miss something here? Vilma is just an average LB…Geez, he may be a great guy, for all we know, but he’s just an average LB. He’s not a superstar athlete. More to the point, he’s not a (sarcasm) Nobel Prize winners; no cancer cures here fellow Jets fan. This guy didn't travel to the moon and map uncharted lunar territory, or scotch a potentially catastrophic outbreak of Ebola. He’s not the guy who saved the lives of American presidents by tackling James W. Hinkley or Squeaky Fromme to the ground. Look, this guy, Vilma was out-played by a rookie this year, I hope the Boys get what they can for this guy! If you ain't with us, you're agin' us. And I've often said, more or less, that when a player joins the Jets, he immediately becomes one of the beloved; the second he leaves, he immediately becomes an outcast, one of the untouchables -- or just somebody to ignore. And I will feel this way no matter how well I know rationally that these are just a bunch of players, and seemingly mercenary ones at that. It's just force of habit. Anyway, peace out.
L3Jet, when did this mysterious injury surface for Vilma, can you tell from what we've seen and what's been written on it? But, then that's why it's a mystery -- Vilma himself did not believe he was hurt. I think the leg weakness has been coming on more than this year. When do you think the CS started looking carefully at Vilma? I can tell you it was a helluva lot sooner than he thought to consider the issue himself. Don't be so much in a hurry to judge the NFL Rookie of the Year in an injury-stopped year. Because the team loses, all of us are looking for someone not just to blame but to punish.
Some good comments in this thread about vilma, and we are all wondering what happened to his knee, and whether it really slowed him down that much. I still am in favor of a Vilma-Harris combo in the middle of our core. Vilma is more valuable to us that a measly 3rd rounder that we would be lucky to get with him coming off of major knee surgery, with the 2 down years of production prior to his injury. I wouldnt be surprised if Vilma plays really well next season next to Harris and he resigns with the Jets because of it. I dont want to see him leave, because I believe that he will be very good in the middle with Harris. and I feel Vilma-Harris is 1000X better than Harris-Barton/Hobson.
LOL @ "Manweenie" He did a poor job last year in many ways that i pointed out during the season. Now that it's off-season I have laid off criticizing him since he hasnt done anything. As I stated earlier in this thread, he is from the belicheat tree in a big way, and the apple doesnt fall far from the tree. He trained under the biggest douche/sociopath in the league. But I completely understand sticking with him, and hope out some hope that his plan may eventually result in a good team. I doubt i will ever like him, but I want to see how he does next season before i conclude whether he is "the NFL's worst coach", or at least one of them.
