Pat Bigold of the Boston Globe notes that pending free agent cornerback Asante Samuel of the Patriots stated that on a scale of 1-10, he?d probably rate his chances of coming back to New England a 10.

    Samuel on the Patriots?

?The fans love me and I love them back. The organization loves me and, hopefully, we can work it out. It?s gonna take a lot to make me happy and my family happy.?

Samuel had six interceptions during the regular season and has 22 in his career. He?s returned three for touchdowns.

    Per Gary Grund.....
"....Somehow, I just cannot see the Patriots paying Samuel the money that he will attempt to get. With Nate Clements signing with the 49ers last season, the bar is set at 8-years, $80 million. The Patriots can?t place the franchise tag on Samuel this year as part of agreement when the team applied the franchise tag on him last year.

New England has two impending big name free agents that they will have a decision to make with. Both Randy Moss and Samuel are headed to free agents, but with Samuel not being able to be tagged, it is more likely that Moss will receive it.

The franchise tag for a cornerback this year is $9.46 million. For a wide receiver, it is $7.84 million...".

How is Asante Samuel worth a $100MM commitment when we have all these guys under contract?

Let's build our own new CBs from the draft.

We need to spend money on all the other positions we REALLY need, both from Free Agency and from the DRAFT.

OL, LBs, speed and more speed at WRs, are major needs of NYJ, in my opinion.

by the way, i'd rather spend the money on the line. if we can get to the qb, he won't have a chance to throw

I Would love to have Asante Samuel along with Revis and Rhodes would be something sick to watch but you gotta be realistic this guys gonna get Ludacris amounts of money we need to fill so many holes including the O Line , D Line , PASS RUSHING OLB , Safety and Third Reciever so Lets be smart.

Yeah, let's be smart. Let's invest in victory. Let's invest in blocking and tackling, instead of tripping and posing!

I still want to see these cerebral NYJ playing with passion and attitude.

Simple as it is, I was reminded of what football is really like by the ferociousness of the Super Bowl.

The Pats didn't lay down they were beat down --- even when they were doing everything that they could think of as well as can be.

Now that's marvelous violence, when you think about it!

Asante can say he wants to be a Pat, but he really cares about the green. If the Jets give him 60 million and the Pats give him 45 million who do you think he will choose?

I would hope he'd choose the Pat's and let us spend that amount filling way more pressing needs. He's a good, maybe great, player, for sure, but the amount it will take to sign him is not worth it to me.

Without a monster pass rush coming from every angle signing a guy like that is moot. Think about this, why sign Samuel when we already have a guy that will be better than him on the roster right now. Imagine when Revis is due and the amount it would be then to have 2 CB's locked up with crazy money.

If Samuel doesnt sign with the Pats and he hits the Free Agent Market which is most likely i think if we get Involved we should be the Frontrunners but then again with this team you never know doubt we give the money and realistcally we shouldnt spend it on a Corner we have much too many holes.

Just a crazy thought. Could you imagine if Moss were to sign with the Jets. As if Boston fans don't already have a death wish with NY fans. That will definitely intensify the Pats/Jets rivalry even more. I know it's not gonna happen though. Just a crazy thought, and a lot of wishful thinking.

Welcome to the board (not sure if anyone has welcomed you yet and this is the first time I've read a post of yours).

I agree 100%. It was great to see the Pats physically dismantled by the sheer power and ferocity of that defense. It was, indeed, marvellous violence!

if the pats cant win with BOTH moss AND samuel, what makes anyone think the jets can win with just ONE of these guys? the giants won without either. its all about the ol/dl as most ppl here already know.

can someone with knowledge of the draft/fa/cap put together a likely senario for our ol/dl for next season? if i read the name suggs i'll move on.

edit: i think that 'someone' is jets81. based on your excellent summary and your knowledge of draft/fa/cap, what might our team look like next season?

I actually thought of that too. The Jets bigger needs are on offense anyway, especially at WR. My thoughts are that whoever the Pats don't franchise (Samuel or Moss) the Jets will pounce on with a huge contract. I just have a hunch.
