If Matt Ryan falls to 6...

Discussion in 'New York Jets' started by TheCoolerGlennFoley, Feb 6, 2008.

  1. I think peeople are severely overrating the needs on both lines. I wholeheartedly agree they need addressing, but for some odd reason, people want us to get 2 OL, a NT and Pass rusher..and stop.

For some reason many believe that we shouldnt fill ANY needs or get ANY upgrades...other than on both lines and at pass rusher. We have many draft picks, and a ton of cap room...even w/ both lines fixed...we are STILL at best a wild card contender... It's important to realize that, and as long as the lines ARE getting addressed...to encourage any other upgrades that can be made.

As for QB, None of the guys in this draft class impress me much. Ryan reminds me of Brian Griese, Brohm is a system guy w/ below average arm strength and Woodson is gonna be hit or miss. The best thing that could happen w/ ryan is he falls to 6, and some team trades away the farm to us to move up and grab him.

To quote Clemenza: Leave the QB, take the linemen.

I pass on him...I can't believe you guys are already to consider Clemens a bust, that you want to draft another QB. Give the guy at least a full season! What do you think Ryan is going to do behind this O-Line other than get killed?

The kid can play, has good feet, can throw on the run.

BUT, as stated, unless we address the OL needs, it doesn't make sense, so as of 3/1/08 if we do not address our OL with Stacey Andrews and Faneca or whomever else, picking up a QB with the 6th pick will not happen.

I have not watched enough tape on Matty Ice to really judge his potential yet, but our need for lineman should be priority #1. I personally think we should draft the best quarterback in this draft class in the third round... Josh Johnson of San Diego. Stats this year; 2988 yards, 68.4% completion, 43 TDs, 1 int! The MVP of the East-West Shine game this year was coached up by former NFL QB and current Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh. The thing that makes this kid special is his pinpoint accuracy and perfect ball placement; he only threw 1 int because he always puts the ball where only his receiver can make the catch. He also has NFL arm strength and great mobility. I guarantee in a few years everyone will be talking about him being the steal of the draft. If he played at a bigger school he would be the number one overall pick without a doubt.

I think the OL was already addressed with the coaching change and I think the problem was more coaching than anything else. I think the defense was also coaching during the first 8 games. That being said I think the Jets need to take BPA at 6, even if it is a QB like Matt Ryan.

It is pretty hard, in my estimation, to know how well we can compete without an offensive line and a pash rush that only shows up after the bye.

I think a lot of assumptions about the NYJ skill folks should be put on the back burner until we have a chance to 'get in the game' as an equal to some of the tuffer teams.

Just remember how well Mr. Brady and Mr. Moss and Mr. Stallworth and Mr. Marooney fared when their OL was getting 'stomped out.'

I say we have more pressing needs than QB at this present time so, No, I wouldn't draft him. My real question is if there are any teams that are drafting after us that are looking for a Quarterback AND would be willing to trade up to get him? Maybe we should get into some gamesmanship and make it look like we might be interested in drafting him just to stir the pot and make somebody else a little bit jumpy. It's always an option if he becomes available.

Think about what the Jets got last season in the first 2 rounds, Revis and Harris. What I learned from that is Mangini knows what he wants on the defensive side of the ball, and he has a good eye for talent. I'm hoping that we go defense again in the first round because not only could the guy on the board actually be the BPA, he could also fill a need.

I dont see there being a bigger need than QB for the Jets right now, until we figure out the Qb position we are on a road to nowhere. With that said, I dont know if Clemens can be the guy or not, based on what we have seen it is not all that promising. I would hope the the FO and CS has a better idea on his potential than we do. If they dont think he can be the guy than they have to do whatever it takes this offseason to find that guy, whether it is Ryan in the first or someone else later on.

This point has been posted about 3452 times in the last few weeks.

    1. The only OL you draft at 6 is a LT, and we already have one, so no way we go OL with our top pick.

    2. The O-Line may be already fixed on draft day (at least i hope so)

    3. Clemens isn?t a bust already, but nothing i saw from him makes me think, that he?ll become a good NFL-QB. But yeah, we have to give him one more season, before we finally know.

As for Ryan, i?d pass. He doesn?t seem like a Franchisepasser, and we would probably loose another 3-4 years before we can give up on him, if he doesn?t develope into a good QB. If Clemens keeps on playing like he did last year, we?ll be in position to take a Franchise-QB next year. And next years QB-Class seems to become much stronger than this year. I wouldn?t mind taking a flyer on a QB later in the Draft. Flacco seems to work his way up to the 2nd, so i don?t think we?ll be in position to take him. Josh Johnson is a guy i?d target in the 4th, Ainge is also a interresting guy in the 4th. Maybe even Ricky Santos in the 6th or 7th. The overall quality seems to drop drastically after the first 100 prospects, so taking a shot on a QB in the 4th isn?t that much harm.

If KC keeps on sucking, we could at least use the last few games to see if we got lucky, and our mid/late-round project may have the tools to become a NFL-QB. If not, we draft a QB high next year.
