you may have missed my intent.. I was not lobbying to have the roster swapped out randomly, I was merely speaking hypothetically. Looking at the roster, I just found it interesting that our talent level did not reflect even one guy that you would say, well no one else in the league at his position would be a great improvement.
....... this would not be such a big issue if this bunch of average talent were winning!!.. I seem to remember the Champ pointing out for yrs now how poor the level of talent is on this team, and I am starting to agree with him. The individual talent on the team, top to bottom is weak..
The Jets have only had one player that they considered franchise-tag worthy in the last 5 years or so, that being John Abraham. That tells you a lot about where their overall talent level is. There are a half dozen teams in the league that have 5 to 10 players who are better than any single player on the Jets.
I agree. Only I believe that any of the main guys that have been talked about in this thread would be tagged If their contract was up. With the exception probably being LW. I think we have that talent in places, but the impact we get, compared to other teams, is vague.
Rhodes is arguably the top 3 at safety. I've seen alot of fans from other team really, really, really like him. Harris already looks like a top 3-4 ILB, but I guess more time is needed there. 3-4 ILB's more loaded than I thought with Thomas, Dansby, Scott/Lewis, Hayes, Willis, Moore and so on... Revis looks like he'll be a top CB, but like Harris only time will tell. He had one of the best seasons of any CB in the league though. Mangold is time, but he looks like he'll eventually be top 3. D'Brick is still 3-4 years away from his early prime. I actually really like Nugent in the long run...he's only gotten stronger each year. So yea it's basically Rhodes. At least we have some really, really good young players with potential.
Rhodes and Mangold, the rookies were very good but they need to follow that up and improve and overcomes the gameplans of opposing teams in their sophomore season before they can be considered top 5 for anything. Too many players don't return from a sophomore slump.
But many do. Those guys definitely showed elite talent. Elite talent + good work ethic + good coaching = great player in the long run. Hopefully. I honestly believe those are two of the safest bets to become stars in the league.
What would we all have considered Erik Coleman after his rookie season? Rhodes has proven that he's a top talent, now he just needs to actually go out and put together a great season to clearly land in the top 5. The other young guys are very promising, but none of them is Coleman proof at this point, including Mangold.
While I like Mangold in the long run, he is highly overrated by EVERYONE because of his strong rookie season. A month after the end of the season, I've re-watched each and every game at least once each, and I can honestly say that Mangold was our second best lineman, next to Brandon Moore (I'm sure I'm going to get bashed for that comment, but if you don't believe me, re-watch the games and focus on the interior line...)... A lot of his mistakes and missed assignments may be attributed to the fact that he had an enormous hole next to him with Clarke there for most of the season, but whether or not that's what caused it, he did not have an outstanding season by any means... I'd put Rhodes as our one clear top-5 player... Mangold will be on his way with a better LG... D'Brickashaw may follow suit, or may not... Harris and Revis both have tremendous potential, but, as abyzmul said, a lot of players slump terribly in their 2nd seasons, and many don't recover from it... Only time will tell with them...
He's proven but he has to go out and prove it? He's had two great seasons in a row...all he has to do is keep it up. I guess this year he only had half a great season, but Rhodes is clearly a top 5 safety now. On Coleman...the guy had a pretty good season in the last season the Jets D had any significant talent on it. I don't see why he's a big deal anymore.
You my friend are looking through green-tinted glasses at the moment. Rhodes had 68 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 5 int's last season. That's a good player, not a great one. The year before he was MUCH better and was clearly a top 5 safety. Erik Coleman's first season was as strong as any free safety the Jets have had in 20 years or so.
I'd say Rhodes is a top 5 safety. There are others who have the potential to be the top 5 at their positions, but are not currently at that level. I'm not sure if this was the original intent of this thread, but I think it hammers home IMO the point that if an elite player is available the Jets need to do all they can to try to bring them in, even if it isn't necessarily at a position that qualifies as a huge need.
Yea but what 5 safeties would you take over Rhodes now? Wilson...Dawkins...Taylor (RIP)...Reed....Polomalu...I wouldn't take Sanders over Rhodes...and personally I like Rhodes more than Troy P. And true on Coleman's season...I just had no idea what he has to do with Revis or Harris or anyone else.
