WTF are you talking about? The 96 Jets were a nightmare, last season of the Kotite era? Congrats? Are you being serious?
'96 and '96 turned out to be blessings in disguise. We were stuck in a rut of 1 year finishing close to .500 and the next year being awful. This broke the cycle and forced Hess to do something and he hired Parcells who turned the franchise around and it stayed around until this past season.
In hindsight, yes, it's one of those years we can now look back at as a watershed moment for the franchise. However, going through it was no fun.
That is absolutely true. Kotite should have been Coach of the Year for winning 3 games that season. The '95 Jets were truly awful.
i would say i have more hope today then i did in the kotite era. i mean giants fans were just laughing their asses off those years and they sucked too, but u still couldn't really say anything.
Our lone win that year was against a sub-par Arizona Cardinals team. That was with the great Boomer Esiason at QB for the Cards. I can't say anything about Rich Kotex because that speaks for itself, but I honestly thought that bringing Neil O'Donnell in would have been a help. It wound up being a nightmare. Our QB situation behind him wasn't all that great either with Frank Reich and Glenn Foley. I still miss Adrian Murrell though!
Not really. One win was vs the Jags in the third week of their existence, at home. Another was a 1-point win over the Dolphins without Marino, also at home.
I think getting rid of Steve Gutman was a big step for this franchise as well, Parcells was the biggest thing that turned this team from complete loss and no hope, to being a possible playoff team every season since 1996, but Gutman was a moron, he did nothing good for this team, who sits back and lets a bigger moron like Kotite come in and cut/trade all the talent the team had? Ron Moore for Rob Moore? Bonehead trade, gave Lagamen to the Jags for nothing, just some of the things that led to the 95-96 Jets teams being so bad, I still thank god for Parcells to this day, he even got rid of those uni's that were always linked to loosing, I know there were some good Jets teams in the 80's but that uni was just a curse, glad they went with the uni's of Broadway Joe's days.
As much as I hate scumbag Belichick, there is one quote he has in his book that I could not agree with more. "Nobody in professional sports has said more and won less than Steve Gutman".
Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Ken Graham starting as QB for the Cards, I remember a sideline shot of Boomer standing there holding his helmet, must of been the back-up that day......
Yes, I think the 1995 team was the worst Jets team I've ever seen and I've been watching for 27 years. From what I've read, the mid 70's teams (especially 1976) may have compared as far as lack of talent.......
Also that 17-16 win over the Dolphins was a comedy of errors by both teams. The Dolphins with Bernie Kosar QBing for an injured Dan Marino dominated the first half but could only kick three FGs for a 9-0 lead. Dexter Carter returned the second half KO for a TD only to have it called back by a penalty. The Jets scored a TD on the drive anyway. Next, it was Mo Lewis making a one-handed INT off a deflected Kosar pass leading to a 50 yard Nick Lowry FG - just long enough to graze over the crossbar. After the Dolphins took a 6 point lead, the Jets came back on a TD pass from Bubby Brister to Johnny Mitchell who made the catch in the EZ despite tripping over his own two feet. After a seemingly game-clinching INT by Vance Joseph, Brister fumbled a snap with less than a minute remaining giving Miami one last shot. Kosar was then picked off again by Victor Green after heaving up a wounded duck. The Jets ran off the field with that one point victory whooping, hollering, and pointing fingers at the Dolphins bench nearly setting off a brawl...anyone else remember that?
That deal was not only Moore for Moore. to the Jets: Ron Moore and two draft picks. Those picks were used to select Hugh Douglas and Melvin Hayes. to the Cardinals: Rob Moore
