Rob is the guy I've wanted pretty bad. Rex lost some dap from me when more than often this year on 3rd and long he would just rush 3 lineman, even when his defense was healthy.

I would love the idea of having this red-ass coaching this defense who is a little bit too passive.

    Get him!

In all honesty, I am feeling for you guys

As a Raider fan, a wanted to take a look at your board to see if you had any NEW INFORMATION in your area about Rob Ryan leaving. Raider Nation (majority anyway) can't wait for this guy to hit the exit door. I know many of you will say i'm just a hater and just looking to stir the pot, and that AL DAVIS just CONTROLLED Ryan and didn't let him run his schemes, but unfortunately what you guys are going to find out THE HARD WAY is that Ryan is all fluff and no substance. You WILL get fiery, if that's what you are hoping for, but what WILL NOT GET is a disciplined, well executing defense. The guy spew all the right rhetoric and talk the talk, but he won't walk the walk. The Raider defense was EXPECTED to be the core of the '07 team, returning 11 starters and SEVERAL ABSOLUTE STUDS, something our offense sorely lacked, but what we got was another dreadful season of making 3rd string RB's look like Walter Payton AND a pass defense that has solid talent look LOST AND OUT OF POSITION all year. I wish for you guys the Al Davis excuse was true, but again, THERE IS NO EXCUSE. Al Davis has essentially handed the keys over to Lane Kiffin and is letting the young coach call ALL THE SHOTS, LITERALLY, and Kiffin gave Ryan FULL AUTHORITY over the defense, which is the ONLY reason he is getting blown out. I seriously hope for all your sakes that Ryan can turn things around, but what I expect from him is a lot of big talk (that is his best quality) and little production. This guy almost NEVER blitzes, and his alignment at the LOS is disgustingly vanilla, with NO DISGUISES. The two best players we have on defense, incredibly athletic LB's Howard and Morrison, were NEVER blitzed or disguised their coverages at the LOS. He played our former #1 pick safety Michael Huff at SS when clearly he needed to be a FS, and has destroyed this kids confidence and development. He TALKED UP our defensive line, especially Terdell Sands (who we now call Terd, for the wrong reasons) who the team resigned in the offseason to a big deal DESPITE HAVING ONLY ONE GOOD SEASON AS A RESERVE. He told us how DOMINATING our third round draft pick DE was looking is training camp before his eventually was CUT, the highest draft pick last year to be cut and not even make the team.

What it boiled down to for Ryan was simple, Kiffin came on board and basically got to RUN THE SHIP, signing coaches and players HE WANTED. He decided that Ryan deserved a shot to stay so he handed him the keys to the defense and expected Ryan to take the 11 RETURNING STARTERS and make our defense the team strength. What Kiffin got was a defense that was pourous mess, always giving up a TD right after our offense scored. We were horrific on third and LONG, heck, third and anything, and our defensive stars were NEVER utilized with any creativity. We made bad running backs and quarterbacks look like pro bowlers and showed NO ABILITY to stop a single opponent WHEN WE HAD TO.

Ryan is a 'players coach', which we have learned the hard way in Oakland, is ALWAYS THE KISS OF DEATH. When players start clamouring about how they 'love to play for a guy', you can usually find a group of players who are undisciplined poor at execution, which perfectly DEFINES our defense.

If I were you guys, I would hold the celebrations, spare your emotions, and take the wait and see approach. I admit, there are SOME Raider fans who are skeptical of whether Ryan got to run his own show (which the majority know is rediculous because he just resined a new contract in '06 and Kiffin CLEARLY gave him control over the D) and think that MAYBE he will show up in NY and become this agressive blitzing disciplinarian who's X and O knowledge is evidenced by his creativity and success...

    ...but I WOULDN'T HOLD MY BREATH:wink:

:raiders: , thanks in great deal unfortunately, to Rob Ryan:sad:

^ Above post seems consistent with what I've read over the last two days. I'm holding my breath on this deal until we see the defense in action next year. If they want this guy to succeed they better give him some better tools, starting with Vernon Gholston...

Your a WISE MAN my friend! My 'prediction' is opinion, but my 'review' was gospel. I figured I would come back to find a bunch of spewing 'troll' hatred, which by the way I wouldn't blame anyone for, questioning WHY IS THE WORLD I WOULD WASTE MY TIME HERE. The short answer is, this is the FIRST TIME I had ever really looked at another teams board looking for INFO. The Ryan stuff just JUMPED OFF THE PUTER AT ME, and I thought to myself "man, if that was my team I would want to know exactly what the record of this cat is, especially considering the HIGH EXPECTATIONS.

But, beyond the Ryan stuff I realized something FAR MORE IMPORTANT, when I REALLY want to know about a PLAYER, a COACH, or a possible pending FA/Cap Casualty, where in the world better to go than THEIR MESSAGE BOARD. I know at our message board EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF INFORMATION can be found, INSTANTLY, many times before it hits NATIONAL press. So I actually bumped around a few other boards getting the scoop on FA/Coaches.

Anyway, two other topics since I saw some of you kicking them around.

First, there is probably a better chance of freezing temps in hell than of the Raiders PASSING UP CHRIS LONG, that is if he is still there. Mcfadden sounds nice, but Raider Nation knows our BIGGEST NEED is on the DL, and we are similar to you guys at RB, solid but not 'special'.
Second, there is EVEN A GREATER CHANCE OF THE ABOVE happening than Nnamdi Asomougha (sp?, always forget) coming WITH RYAN. He will ABSOLUTELY be extended or franchised, but he WILL NOT BE LEAVING. Kiffin AND Davis LOVE THIS KID.

BTW, thanks for the draft pick position help :)

I know what you're saying man. I just HOPE YOU'RE wrong. Silver surfer, you ain't a troll and I don't THINK YOU ARE. You're definitely not like some of the RAIDER FANS we saw here last year. DEFINITELY, I hope your team does well...I never really hated the RAIDERS until whatever year they put us out of the PLAYOFFS, and I don't hate them now.

Hopefully J RUSSEL turns out to be GREAT. Until then, LATER!!

Thanks for the post, silversurfer. I'm a little apprehensive about him coming here now as your post doesn't seem like "sour grapes." Thanks for the warning, not that anything we say or do will prevent him from coming here.

Thanks for this analysis. It does make me wonder, though... If this is his first time as a d-coordinator, maybe he just doesn't have enough creativity for the scheming? He must have done SOMETHING well to hold down various jobs. If I'm reading your analysis correctly, he's not very creative with blitzes, and isn't very good at putting players in position to win... Okay, but maybe his strength is motivating players? Possibly training them on basics like gap control, tackling and avoiding pass interference? I'm thinking that there was a reason that Mangini and he worked so well together before. I'm fine with him coming if that means we get Mangini to devise the defensive game plan.

Play-calling is a different skill than coaching players and my hope is that Mangini will do what he does best and hopefully, Ryan does what he does best.

You are right, definitely not 'sour grapes'. Quite frankly, RAIDER NATION loved this dudes 'look' (which SCREAMS RAIDER/HELLS ANGELS) and desperately wanted him to succeed, but unfortuntely is was more SHOW than SUBSTANCE.

Kiffin gave him all the rope, and he slipped it around his neck. There is NO WAY Davis would let Kiffin run him off it that wasnt the case.

The answer EVERYONE will find out, if and when he joins the Jets (or whoever, as long as he's out of Oakland) is this; WAS HE A PUPPET FORCED TO SWALLOW WHAT AL DAVIS FED HIM?

Frankly, as I have stated previously, that excuse simply does not hold water as far his FAILURE IN OAKLAND. But, playing devils advocate and pretending that he WAS, why in the WORLD would this guy extend his contract last season and stay on board especially with all the CHAOS we had going? If he was a puppet, than I have ZERO respect for the guy re-upping for the cayyysh ONLY TO BE TOLD WHAT TO DO.

THAT, above all else, should concern the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS faithful.

Final note, in Raiderland, many of us are HOPING that possibly his brother REX gets the gig. Highly unlikely, but from a scheme AND execution standpoint, seems like the BETTER OF THE TWO RYAN BROTHERS.

Now that I think about it, I better go spend a few minutes finding out what Raven fans think of the Jolly Ol' Fat Brother before I start 'pawning' for MORE PUNISHMENT :)

    Oh, yeah...

CHEATRIOTS SUCK CHEATRIOTS SUCK CHEATRIOTS SUCK CHEATRIOTS SUCK, ETC.

    Here's my best anwers:

    1. Motivation? ABSOLUTELY. Players LOVE Him. (but this always scares me)
    2. I have to ASSUME he has solid SCHEME knowledge, but I honestly have NO ANSWER for why it did not show up ON THE FIELD. Our Defense is FAR MORE TALENTED than our offense, but the EXECUTION was the polar opposite.
    3. He MAY have gotten GUN SHY after initially implementing the 3-4 when he arrived, ONLY TO HAVE IT FAIL MISERABLY(wrong pieces) and return to the 4-3. Personally, I would LOVE the Raiders to go to a 3-4, NOW, becuase our LB's have developed into MONSTER playmakers for us, but also because it just seems after two years of bland vanilla base defenses getting whooped, it always seems like the 3-4 teams are BLITZ HEAVY, which is what Raider Nation is begging for and HAVE NOT SEEN AT ALL.

The BEST answer I have is this- Rob Ryan CAN and DOES excel in motivation and is probably BEST SUITED singularly focused as a POSITION COACH, not a DC. Just like many DC's/OC's become HC's only to fail miserably because they are not suited for the top job (which BOTH our teams can lament years of proof), that is my best guess with this cat. He's a walking ball of expletive and fire, but when it comes to the OVERALL responsibilities of implementing his VISION, he may not be WIRED for it:sad:

BTW, any solid FA DL or WR's you could send our way would be GREATLY APPRECIATED:up:

    and...
    CHEATRIOTS WILL ALWAYS CHEAT:mad:

When it comes to Raiders fans on this site, they all seem to brag about how great the coaches they hire are, and then when they're fired, they say how awful they were. There's one constant in this whole thing: Al Davis.

I'm sure Rob Ryan will be much better with a HC who shares his defensive beliefs, and not a HC and owner that forced a system on him.

True enough, but wouldn't it be fair that MOST fans SAY that about their new HC hires out of desperation and HOPE?

He MAY blossom for you guys and make us sorry we lost him, either way though, it is definitely time for him to move on.

MANY thougt that would happen to our FORMER DC who helped us get shalacked in the Gruden Bowl, Chuck Bresnahan, but he went to Cincinatti WITH a likeminded defensive HC Marvin Lewis, and is now currently in the UNEMPLOYMENT line.

Darn that mean ol Al Davis.

    Truth be told..

it's got to be HARD to hate us the same considering our last FOUR YEARS OF BRILLIANCE:breakdance: , but I do however understand.

I would have never thought I could DESPISE another franchise MORE THAN DALLAS OR SAN FRAN, but congrats to the CHEATRIOTS for showing me the ligh:eek:hmy:

Honestly though, as far as fans go, I could care less WHO you root for, just make sure you have the old worn out hats and clothes to prove it ONCE THEY ARE BACK ON TOP:mad:

Thanks SilverSurfer , good informative read. Welcome to TGG.

    Re; Our D this year.
Its just my opinion that at some point this year Suttons reins were well and truly shortened , about the same time Vilma got hurt , and that Mangini had alot more to do with the D. Now IF Ryan does come in as a positional coach , that could work well if Mangini still has that same hands on approach , (if thats what happened).
Your 'editorial' just highlights my own personal reservations about Ryan. Rigt at this moment hes hardly an upgrade.
How would you like Bob Sutton?

How can you judge Ryan as a DC or any other coach by what they do in Oakland? Ryan's hands were tied by Big Al and the son of the inventor of the Tampa 2. It wasn't too long ago that a New head coach came in here and decided we needed to change from the 3-4 to the Tampa 2(Herm). The mistake the Jets made was from switching from one type of personnel to another. It also turns out Herm wasn't too good at teaching the Tampa 2. We should stay 3-4 and continue to build. Kind of like Pittsburgh has done. Ryan is dying to come over to the Jets, something you don't hear from alot of guys considering what team is in front of us and Parcells behind us.
