Damn, he was a great ST coach (arguably the best Coach on the staff this year), he helped Leon and formerly Miller be so great...

I read he needs special surgery and needs time off, but he didn't say he "retired"

    he will be missed

This is great, the best and most reliable coach we have now calls it quits. What's next?

I almost would have liked to have seen him get a shot as HC of the NYJ.

God Bless Mike Westhoff, the absolute best coach we've had since Parcells.

I read about this from the Jets site e-mail this morning, and I was stunned. I thought he had beaten this thing. As has been said, football is nothing, I pray for his return to good health.

There is a possibility that he could return in '09, and he will have a role with the team in the future, so that's good news, at least in terms of football.

I was one of the people campaigning for him to get the HC position when Herm left. Perhaps this is why he didn't get/take the job?

    He will be sorely missed.

Westoff has been a great coach for us for a long time now. He has a lot of medical issues, and I hope all is well for him. Good luck Westy! We all appreciate your efforts!

This stinks, we'll miss him a lot.

Jets have always recently had great special teams, thanks to him. I rarely remember us giving up any KR/PR TDs (except Ellis Hobbs) recently and our KRs are always great and score a lot (Morton-Miller-Leon. This loss will hurt a lot, but I wish him the best.

Man, I didn't see this until just now. What a freaking gut-punch, STs was becoming a truly legitimate and consistent weapon for us. Hopefully his recovery goes well and he enjoys his retirement, because he will be sorely missed.

You know the funny thing is that the Jets have always seemed to have good or great ST coaches, the best of course being Westhoff. Why couldn't they have done the same thing with the HC? In fact I can only remember one real bad ST coach (Rose) who I believe was a part of Kotites staff. So with history on our side, we should get a good one to take over.
