A lot of people here are talking about what a bad qb Chad is. He is the type of QB that need a great O line. He needs time,he hasnt had that this year. For most of his time here he has had one of the best O lines(few years back). If I had my choice i'd keep Chad over Clemens and build a killer O line and Running game around him.
Chad with a killer OL and a great running game and a top 5 D is a sure bet to get us to 9 or 10 wins and a wild card berth. Call me an optimist but I think Clemens may be able to get us a wild card berth with 11 wins with that around him?
As a matter of fact I did. It seems I have been doin quite a bit more tilting as the year progresses. Hence the Clemens spelling in my past post. Oh well My team sucks and I can't spell. Add to that I was drunk and Momma wouldnt put out so I got pissed and now we arent talking on Christmas eve. What you have is the typical end of another Jet Season. So for all my fellow Jetfan, no spelling, undersexed friends here in Gangreeen, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year. Maybe next year we will be good enough where I wont be forced to drink just to get through the game and I can come home to some happy time with Momma..As for the spelling ...eh...... cant have everything
Chad had this offense in the top 15 one time with that great OL and HOF RB. One time. Chad is done here. He can't lead the team to points anymore. He can't beat a good defense. He's making terrible mistakes that he never used to make. Any QB would look good with as much time to throw as Brady has. It's no excuse. And it's highly unlikely that we'll have an OL that caliber for a while. I know people want to see how Clemens can do when he has all the weapons, a #1 WR, a solid ground game, great pass protection, but the true measure of a QB shouldn't be what he can do when he has the perfect arsenal around him, it should be how he responds during adversity. We shouldn't give up on him yet, too soon, but I'll be damned if I'll fall in line with those that think we should just hand him the reigns for all 16 games next season win, lose, or draw. The guy had some nice drives this season, but nothing that would make anyone look on and say "we've found our QB for the future". For that reason and nothing more they need to bring in some competition in the offseason. See my sig for the guy I'm hoping lands on the roster, but whether it's him or not, they need to at least bring in a vet that will push Clemens and make him earn the job. I tend to believe Mangini will see it that way too. His job is riding on next season...he doesn't have time to go through growing pains with a QB. He needs the best player he can possibly find to fill that position, and like it or not that player might not be on the roster right now.
Yes, it has been a very tough year and I am sorry to hear about Momma. Hopefully, Christmas Eve will have a way of..............making spirits bright.
i know its unfair of me to judge clemens until he has the benifit of a good o line etc,but i really just didnt see anthing from this guy that makes me think he will be the guy. For me its chad,or someone else.
Personally I am with you. But bee careful what you say defending Chad here. You will get eaten alive. As for Clemens I wish I didnt have to be down on him but all i am hearing is give him time. 6 games is a pretty long time to show nothing. Not askin for a Montana, just some points on the Board.
After yesterday, I am completely convinced that letting Pennington go would be a huge mistake. He is still a quality NFL starter. He played behind an OL that was of semi-pro quality yesterday. Why does the CS put in Moe, Curly and Larry at LG, RG, and RT in week 16 against one of the best DLs in the NFL. Pennington had no time at all to throw and still completed 26 of 32 for 280 yards. It would take Clemens two game to complete 26 passes. As for the number of points put up - the pick in the end zone goes on him, although it was a very good defensive play. Other than that, penalties, sacks and missed field goals (why was Graham -also the holder- inactive - shouldn't we audition for a punter in preseason??) stopped the Jets yesterday, not the QB. If after watching yesterday's game, Jet fans think that the problem lies with the QB position, I just don't know what to say. Keep Pennington and Clemens. The Jets need a veteran next year anyway. Look aroung the league - the QB play is atrocious. Besides Brady, Manning, Romo, (who has had two bad games in a row),Hasselback and Favre, who is really that good. Just do down the league and tell me why, after looking at every team, the Jets should get rid of a QB that has won when half decent players are put in front of him, not this season's rag-tag crew. Buffalo - Edwards??? Losman?? Miami - 'nuff said Pittsburgh - Rothlesberger is inconsistent and has a tremendous supporting cast Cincinnati - Palmer was pitiful this year and he is throwing to the best receiving tandem in the NFL. What is his excuse? Should the Bengals dump him? Cleveland - Too early to tell Baltimore - pitiful - and McNair was awful four years ago, not just this year Jacksonville - Garrard has been playing very well. Tenessee - Young can't pass - period. He is not an NFL QB. Houston - Jury still out on Schaub. KC - pitiful Oakland - Will Russell be the answer? Culpepper sure isn't. SD - Rivers looks ordinary behind a very good team Denver - Cutler has played well, but is below .500 on a team that was playing .700 ball before he became the QB. NYG - Eli stinks. Giant fans would take Pennington in a heartbeat Phil - McNabb is being run out of town Wash - winning with a 36 year old QB who hasn't thrown a pass in 5 years - is Collins or Campbell really the answer Chic - Grossman, Griese, Orton - horrible Det - Kitan is a journeyman or a back up , nothing more Minn- Jackson is not an NFL QB, even with that line, running game and a good defense Atl - SOS NO - Brees is good, but has had an off year - very similar to Pennington in terms of arm strength and style and was run out of SD for no good reason TB - Garcia has played well, but before that they seemed to use 10 different QBs last year and this year Car - holding auditions during the season Stl - Bulger has looked horrible behind a bad OL - sound familiar??? SF - Smith is a bust Ariz - Warner??? Leinart does not wow anyone. With that list out there, why get rid of Pennington? Makes no sense to me.
Perfectly said. People who think there are five year rebuilding programs anymore are fooling themselves. This regime has now had one good year--thanks in large part to Pennington--and one bad year. They can't afford to bet the ranch on a kid that may or may not be able to play or they won't see year #4. As you said, we know Chad can play. If we could block or run the ball we wouldn't be having this discussion, and dumping Chad doesn't solve either of those problems.
And 2 picks, one of which cost the Jets at least a shot at a field goal, and he led the offense to 6 points.
Did you watch the game? He had the Jets inside the Titan 30 about 5 times and the failure to put up points was his fault once. When does the rest of the team get the blame it deserves????? I guess Pennington missed those field goals, took those stupid penalties, and couldn't stop the pass rush??? I guess Pennington stinks for not being able to complete those other 6 passes with a half second to throw before he got buried by a Titan DL. Look, Pennington had some bad games this year, and the end zone pick was a pass he'd like back, but under the circumstances yesterday, he played very well. And why does Pennington get blamed for interceptions and lack of offensive production when Clemens has thrown 10 - count them 10 interceptions, only 4 TDs and has completely unable to generate offense even against the worst defenses in the league.
I'm not sold on Clemens either, and I didn't put all the blame in Pennington for the Jets pathetic offense, but you only told half the story on Penningtons stat line. It's easy to downplay that he threw a horrible pick in the endzone when you're trying to justify why he should be the starter or why we should keep him in general. That pick in the endzone likely cost the Jets the game, and it's plays like that that got him benched in the first place. Nugent missed a 51 yarder...a kick from that range is never a lock. (even though his missed it badly). Stating that we should be content with Pennington because 20 something other teams in the league have crappy QB's doesn't really make a strong case for him. It's like saying, "yea he sucks but other QB's suck worse so we should keep him".
I watched the whole game yesterday and saw a below average QB performance to go along with the rest of the offensive play. This is pretty much what Pennington has brought to the table all year - with a few exceptions. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone looking at yesterdays game objectively can say Pennington played well, unless your main criteria is a high completion percentage. This is why he shouldn't play. He's not going to do outstanding things given the current state of this team, and we're only risking an injury to him which would essentially nullify his trade value. He's not going to increase his trade value playing with this team right now, everyone knows what he can do. As for Clemens, he's looked bad too but he has far less experience. Let's see what he can do with a full preseason as the #1 guy and a full season.
The team has averaged more points and more wins with Clemens than with Chad despite Chad's guady stats. If your expectations of Chad and Clemens are the same in terms of mistakes at this point in there careers, I think that's a bit unrealistic. In spite of expectations, Clemens has done better than Chad at putting points on the board and has won twice as much. Chad is so controlled in his play, I'm amazed he throws any INT's. He is a low risk low reward player and the INT's he has been throwing are glaring in how costly they have been.
Something happened mentally to CP over the last 2 years. He barely has any fire left. He is so controlled and calm its frankly damn boring. However, if it's one thing he showed me, contrary to popular belief, is that he is not done. It will be nice to see him in a Ravens uniform next year. If he ends up with the Dolphins, I think I am done with football.
Neither is the answer, but!....... IF I had to pick I'd go with Chad in a heartbeat. Check the stats!!! Better completion percentage, better TD percentage, better yards per attempt, better QB rating, (I know that's kinda' BS, but still) and, believe it or not, guess which QB threw the longest pass this year? Chad!!!! Obviously it's water under the bridge and Chad's gonna' most likely be somewhere else next year. But if Eric Blandgini hadn't messed up in the off-season and had actually IMPROVED the OL instead of ruining it, I think last year's comback player of the year would have kept us in the hunt thru December at least. Good luck Chad. It's been fun.
Mangini was the one that neglected the O-line for half a decade? You can't rebuild an Oline in 2 seasons. They could have found better stopgaps to keep it from deteriorating, but the current state of the line extends far beyond our current regime.
did mangini throw the game? Good points Joe Willie. In fact, has anyone had the suspicion that maybe the penguin THREW the game yesterday to get a better draft pick? New OL, new punter/holder, etc? Just sayin'. Anyone?
The fact being until you fix the rest of the offense, neither QB is going to succeed. To dump Chad--a veteran captain who already knows the team and offense inside and out--and bring in another veteran makes no sense unless you bring in a guy who is better than Chad. That's highly unlikely. We're trying to upgrade the team, I don't see how downgrading the most important position on the offense is going to do that. Let Chad and Clemens compete for the job next year, the better guy gets it, very simple. I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that, no matter which guy you prefer. I don't want to hear about cap numbers because Clemens isn't getting a raise until he proves he can win games. That's how Chad got his contract, he earned it. Then he took a pay cut and earned it all back again after two surgeries. So you'll have basically what we had this year in terms of QBs on your cap. If Clemens wins the job and earns starters money, you deal with that next off season when you know what you're getting yourself into. If he doesn't, you'll be glad you kept Chad.
