Runyan spurns Jets for Eagles

On a day of mixed results in free agency, the Jets failed in their bid to sign right tackle Jon Runyan, who returned to the Eagles with a three-year contract. But the Jets did secure another starting position, re-signing tight end Chris Baker.

With Runyan off the market, the Jets may resume their efforts to sign former Titans left tackle Brad Hopkins, who visited with them on March 8. Talks are ongoing with the Jets, according to Hopkins' agent, Mark Bartelstein.

The Jets made a strong pitch for Runyan, arguably the top tackle in free agency. He appeared to be leaning toward the Jets, but the Eagles made a late offer, Runyan said yesterday. He called it "a tough decision," adding, "(The Jets) have a lot of young coaches, a young GM, and I saw a lot of the same things I saw here when they hired Coach (Andy) Reid. They're moving in that direction; they're just a few years behind."

The Jets' offensive line may take another hit; versatile Jonathan Goodwin is strongly considering a two-year offer from the Saints.

On a busy day, the Jets re-signed a key player, added a fullback and lost out on a veteran.

# Tight end Chris Baker, a free agent who had narrowed his choices to the Jets and Dolphins, decided to remain with the Jets. Terms of his deal were undisclosed.

# Rookie free-agent fullback Micheal Warren, a 6-1, 249-pound converted linebacker out of Division 1-AA Elon via North Carolina State, signed with the club. He could emerge as a key backup and special teams player.

# Veteran free-agent right tackle Jon Runyan decided to remain with the Eagles, signing a three-year, $12.5 million deal with the Eagles but the Jets were willing to double the money in the first year and pay him much more over the life of the contract.

The Jets failure to land Runyan, 32, means they may now be leaning toward selecting Virginia offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson over N.C. State defensive end Mario Williams with their fourth pick overall in next month's draft. Veteran tackle Brad Hopkins, who visited the Jets, is still on the market, however.

Warren, a linebacker and two-time all-conference performer in two seasons at Elon, played some fullback while at N.C. State before transferring. He enters a spirited competition at fullback following the release of veteran starter Jerald Sowell. Fourth-year pro B.J. Askew is penciled in as the starter.

"I'm excited," Warren said yesterday. "This is a great opportunity. "And I love playing special teams. That's a great part of the game. It wins games."

Houston, Oakland and Tampa Bay had also expressed interest in Warren.

Baker, a fifth year pro, started nine games last season before suffering a broken left fibula. An excellent blocker and solid receiver, the 6-3, 269-pounder caught 18 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown last season before being injured.

Some reviews on Mike Tannenbaum's first seven weeks as the Jets' general manager came in recently during his trade negotiations with Washington and Atlanta.

They weren't the kind he'll put in his scrapbook.

"Mike's getting greedy," one players agent said about the then-stalled talks with the Falcons.

"Everybody tells me the Jets are very hard to deal with," another said, "and it hasn't changed."

And one Atlanta source said a member of the Falcons' hierarchy labeled the Jets bringing Seattle into the trade "a little amateurish" and said, "We've never seen a team behave like this."

But if Tannenbaum was happy, disappointed or irritated by these fast blasts from around the NFL, he won't let on. And he dismissed the notion that the Redskins and Falcons were testing the new GM on the block.

"It's just like any negotiation," said Tannenbaum, who took part in every negotiation as the assistant GM during Terry Bradway's regime from 2001-05. "It's about being prepared, being a good listener within the building, understanding what we're trying to accomplish, getting a complete understanding of exactly what our head coach is looking for.

"Then when there's value presented to us, acting on that value."

Mr. T did that in the trade for Patrick Ramsey, when even up until the day of the deal some Jets insiders thought they might have to part with a fourth-round pick. But the final price was a sixth-rounder for the former first-round QB who has a chance to beat out Chad Pennington for the starting job.

And while the value on the John Abraham trade wasn't eye-popping -- they got Denver's 29th overall pick after seeking Atlanta's 15th -- the Jets held firm on getting a first-rounder and not giving up a first-day pick of their own to balance the deal.

In other words, the first two deals of the new Gang Green regime were good ones.

How good remains to be determined, but they were indicative of the style the 37-year-old GM will bring to the table: plenty of, as one insider said, "statistical analysis," a "methodical approach," as Tannenbaum called it, in formulating a decision and a patience seemingly beyond his years in letting the deal develop.

Then when one transaction is done, there won't be any champagne or high-fives -- maybe a good dinner, then on to the next problem. Tannenbaum and Mangini already have established their work schedule, arriving at Weeb Ewbank Hall early, occasionally staying past midnight, sometimes sleeping at the complex.

The next big test for them likely will be the draft. Agent Alan Herman believes Tannenbaum has inherited significant expectations, because of the Giants acquiring Eli Manning two drafts ago, to select a QB of the future such as Southern Cal's Matt Leinart.

"I like Mike," Herman said. "I think he's knowledgeable. His expertise at administering a team? We'll see. He'll have ideas on the right fit as far as personnel. That doesn't mean there's not great pressure on him, but he does have an opportunity his first year to make a huge mark on the franchise."

Recent rumors have said the Jets are interested in doing just that, trading up with New Orleans for Leinart. But new whispers suggest the Jets may not be as hot for Leinart or Texas QB Vince Young and may just allow the draft to come to them.

As Tannenbaum said in his typically unrevealing GM-speak this week, "We're not going to rule any scenario in or out."

And as Herman put it, "I hope Mike is up to the task. I think he is."

What the hell is this crap about? The 29th pick in the draft for a 3 time pro bolwer is being greedy? The Falcons can go screw themselves. I guess the Mangini and Mr. T should have just bent over and taken whatever the Falcons wanted to give them. No Shaub, no first rounder, that's being greedy. Getting greedy? Hard to deal with?

I LOVE IT!! I'm sure the agents love dealing with the Redskins, because they give top dollar for guys who are not top notch. At the same rate, agents probably hate doing business with the Pats becuase they refuse to over pay, they make no sentimental signings and stick to their plans.

I'd rather Tangini follow the Pats blue print and build winners for the right price as opposed to being like the Skins and play your best football in the front office in March.

What a bunch of little bitches. You're willing to offer a player $18M guaranteed, meaning you obviously feel he is a playmaker and a game changer. Yet, at the same time, you try to lowball the team and offer a 2nd-round pick and a player. Then, the team the Pro-Bowler is tagged by, finds a team that is willing to pay the player's value in compensation. You, being the dumbasses that you are (Falcons FO), are OFFENDED by the fact that a team is trying to get the best value out of their player. I mean, God for-fucking-bid a team trades a player for a lesser value because you offered the trade first. Trying to lowball them in the first place was just absolutely pathetic as it is. McKay & Co. have no balls whatsoever.

Not quite true. Apparently, they wanted some mid-round picks thrown in by us for them to give us #15. We wouldn't do it, but Denver would.

I really hope the Jets don't move up from the 4 spot unless its to greab Bush. Just to much value to be had if they stay put. I'd actually like to trade down and aquire more picks

I woudn't want Bush. I can't see him being a successfull every down back. Leinart, however, would be worth trading up for.

MT is playing hardball with these other teams and agents and they are not used to it because Bradway didn't. They may be unhappy but every Jet fan knows we are on the right track.

I hope we are being patient..and letting the draft happen...on the other hand we do need to be prepared for all possibilities...such as trading down..if we do not like what is left when we pick...or even moving up..if deemed ecessary 9I hope not though).

I'd be pleased with Young, Williams, or even Brik @ 4.

Leinart will be a bust...and Hawk is not a 1st.4th selection

i agree man.. screw the falcons. were only ""a little amateurish"" because MT didnt let Mckay rape him. i think its a little amaturish to add/overpay a guy who is terrible vs run defense to a team with a run defense that is one of the worst in the league.
