...this hopefully can be an intelligent thread to figure out where we stand now and in the next couple of years....I?ve been through many of the Jets down periods during the last 40+ years, but this latest implosion was unexpected? .....Coming into this season (although a tougher schedule) I believed we would be 8-8 or 9-7..with a healthy Chad coming in and almost the entire 06 playoff team, there was legimate reason for optimism, going from a 10 win season to this is tough, but .it's easy to take a nay-sayer?s mentality and say we suck?., but where do we actually stand?? I really believed we were in the top 15 of the league and improving?.are we a bottom 5 team??? I want to believe Clemens can evolve into a solid top 10-12 NFL QB, and have seen glimpses of his potential, but how long will we wait to determine this?? 08 and part of 09?? and until we get a competent QB, we will be in the lower tier of teams?. Do we have talent on this roster??....we have some very good young players in Rhodes, Harris, Mangold, Revis?.but we obviously don?t have enough?.although I just stated I like the 07 top picks, I was disappointed that our FO traded 4 first day picks for 2 players?..so what?s the plan, build through the draft and wait for Brady to retire or get hurt?.and I thought waiting for Marino to retire seemed liked eternity? ....the court of public opinion had Mangini as a genious to having "no clue" in the period of 3 months...can he be a good NFL coach???? the oldtimers like myself have been through worse than this, so I'm not jumping off the bridge, but where are we....especially with the Pats in our division...
Well, next year the AFC East is due to play the AFC West and the NFC West. The bad news is four long plane trips. The good news is that the best teams in those conferences are the Chargers and Seahawks. With the Jets playing the 3rd place schedule, Mangini's IQ is going to seem to raise considerably. While you'll have your two games against the Patriots, and who knows if the Bills will manage to improve, next year the AFC North and AFC South will be beating up on each other rather than the relatively soft coastal conferences. But that is just a one year respite. I really don't know if Mangini and Clemens can grow into their jobs. They need another year or two. I am also dubious about the Jets front office's ability to judge talent. If that isn't there, Mangini and Clemens are kinda moderately doomed.
We’re the 49ers...a team that decided go a different direction and figured the best way to get there would be to hire a series of bad coaches, bad coordinators, start a series of bad quarterbacks, pick up a bunch of the leagues garbage as stop gaps and draft a bunch of who knows guys (no one say a god damn thing about Harris or Revis). The biggest difference is – at least 49ers fans can look back and take some pride in its teams past accolades; we, have our beloved Jets meltdowns. Going to be a long time before this team is entertaining again…maybe in another two years we can steal Bellichickens equipment manager and make him our next coach. BTW – there was allot of talk of how great it would be if Mandope would get his buddy Rob Ryan to run the D next year so I watched the GB – Chokeland game this weekend. Yep – he definitely looked like he’ll be a big upgrade pause not.
Well we have alot of holes on this team but at the same time we have alot of young players to build a solid team around. The jury is still on Kellen Clemens but this kid has a strong arm and can make just about any throw on the field. He has the ability to avoid the rush and escape the pocket and even pick up some tough yards with his legs. Yes he does have more INT's than TD's this season... But at the same time, he is still a rookie in terms of playing time. THis kid will only get better with playing time and next year he should be ready to go as a 2nd year starter. Cotchery- Will be our L.Coles for years to come. This kid is a play-maker if I ever seen one. Leon Washington- Explosive David Harris- Vilma who? One hell of a 3-4 MLB... AND HE's only a ROOKIE! D.Revis- He has made some rookie mistakes... But just the fact that he's a rookie and doing a hell of a job is a bright spot for this Jets Defense. Revis was the best CB taken out of the draft. Rhodes- Amazing playmaker in the secondary Ferguson- Next year I feel we will all see that this kid is turning into a Franchise LT Mangold- Future pro bowler for years to come. Nugent- He has his ups and downs, but what kicker dont? He should be a Jet for a long time And lets not forget the players we will be getting in the draft this year.
Have to disagree. Problems start with the O-Line. You could have Montana back there throwing to Rice- the results wouldn't be much different. The QB isn't getting much time to set up and throw, protection is breaking down and he's being rushed to throw, take a sack or even lob the interception. I'm convinced that if we shore up the O-line over the offseason with something more than journeymen retreads, Clemmens' development will continue to improve. Leave things the way they are now and our passing/running games are going to continue to suck...
...the point of my initial thread was to try to figure where we stand...and I'm still not sure...how did we get so bad in a year?? tougher schedule?? this season looks similar to Herm's 05 team, but we had the hope that Chad's shoulder if healthy & lighter schedule gave optomism...can Clemens be ready to show dividends in 08...or will we be searching for a QB for years??
I think Clemens has IT. He showed IT again this past Sunday he had a terrible game but at the end he almost pulled out the win. He's at his best when the game is on the line. The Jets have to give him more gamebreaking gamechanging playmakers to work with and strengthen the o-line. I'm not sure Thomas Jones is the answer at RB he hasn't been the player I thought he was going to be. The Jets need to get bigger and better on both lines. Defensively, get 3-4 guys in here enough with the square pegs in round holes. They need more speed at the offensive skill positions. And USE FREE AGENCY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not talking about the bargain basement players Woody has been getting us since 2000 I'm talking about using FA to add elite football players. Like Asante Samuel & Alan Faneca.
So you see "IT" with Clemens? Future All Pro Kellen Clemens? I see a deer in headlights, that throws a ball real hard, into the dirt, or the hands of a DB.
What I see thus far is an immature QB who up until a few games ago never had the chance to gell with the starting O. I see a QB who is limited not only by experience, but by the players around him who are either playing on a subpar level (3/5 of the O-Line) or playing hurt (Coles/Cotchery). Taking those factors into consideration, I can't yet pass judgment on the guy one way or the other. I'm willing to let him finish out the season, concentrate and prepare for next season, enter camp as the #1 and then see what he can do for us next year. This season equates to nothing more than mop-up duty.
I would rather not flush next year down the toliet before it starts. Kellen will be a fine back up. Sign a Vet and draft a real franchise QB.
I don't get it. As other posters have shown, far better QB's, like Manning, had absolutely terrible first seasons, and that was after playing an entire 16 games. You're already willing to throw the guy under the bus based upon what you've seen thus far? With insight like that, I'd like to think that the talent departments of 32 NFL teams would be banging down your door, looking to make you the "Grande Scout."
You use the O line as a reason to quantify Clemens performance but then say Jones is not the player you thought he would be? Jones is 9th in the league in rushing behind that same line, will probably end up with between 1100 and 1200 yards on the year. With an improved O line he should be a top 5 back. Those same gamebreaking gamechanging playmakers you ask for to help out Clemens would certainly take some of the pressure off Jones also.
At this point I am. He has shown nothing to me at all. People were so desperate for a "change" that they are looking for something I don't think is there. Again with the Manning comps? Were the Colts a 10 win playoff team the season before? Or were they a 3 win doormat team? Give it a rest.:manning:
And your putting that on Clemens? Perhaps you noticed the weak O-line or bad play calling? He already has more wins than Chad did this year, while playing the thougher half of the schedlue. As for the Manning Comparisons. People are not proclaiming him the next great QB jsut pointing out that even very good one have bad first seasons. Perhpas that may just shatter you negitive little world right now though, so continue to belive what you will.
Just because Manning sucked as a rookie doesn't mean every QB who sucks as a rookie gets a pass. Manning was also a #1 overall pick and a blue chip prospect. No one but the Jets and a couple random scouts ever saw "franchise QB" in Kellen Clemens. He's nothing near being a sure thing.
I haven't seen the speed, elusiveness and power I thought Thomas Jones had. TJ doesn't just get stuffed in goal line situations he gets BLOWN UP. I think Leon Washington is the Jets best back. Why can't Leon be our Brian Westbrook?
