Well deserved recognition for David Harris.... 02:57AM - David Harris Named Rookie Of The Month Friday, December 7th, 2007 by Gary Grund Jets rookie linebacker David Harris has been named NFL defensive rookie of the month for the month of November. Harris tallied 37 tackles with one sack in three games in November and amassed double-digit tackles in two of the three games. Against Washington on November 4, the rookie linebacker led the team with a career-high 20 tackles. On November 18 against Pittsburgh, Harris posted 11 tackles and his second sack of the season in the Jets? 19-16 overtime win. Harris is also the first Jets player to earn Defensive Rookie of the Month honors since linebacker Jonathan Vilma in November of 2004. :breakdance:
I would cut Barton b/c he is old. Harris (Big and Strong) and Vilma (Small and Fast) would work very good in the middle. Also the way Robertson has stepped up Vilma will def. be better. I know Vilma is a 4-3 lb but keeping him would be a very good idea. Trust Me!
I agree with you 100% Chrebet. It's awesome we have Harris to lead our 3-4, but we should keep Vilma in our hip-pocket as long as we can. We need as much talent as possible!!!
Vilma was a very good 4/3LB. But he sucks in the 3/4. There is no sense for anyone to keep him. Get something for him and let him resurrect his career somewhere that he can be useful.
Glad to see that it is much more important to have JV on the team because you have his jersey & signed helmet then for him to be a quality player for us. I suggest U read this thread & the comparison between JV & DH http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=27602
Barton has been playing excellent the last 3 or 4 games as well as Harris. Maybe having Harris in there has helped him. Besides he isn't that old. Just trade Vilma in the offseason and take what we can get out of him, is the best option IMO.
I think Barton runs hot and cold, but he can be servicable. Can someone make a clear case as to why Vilma and Harris can't play together? Is it their size? Is there such a difference between one inside positon verse another so that Vilma and Harris platy the same one and not the other?
If Vilma's going to be gone, I think we need Barton's fiery veteran leadership in the front 7..... You can't win without veteran leadership, and we have very little of it now (Barton, Ellis, T. Jones, Coles)
Good questions. they did play together a lot earlier in the season, and Vilma still was having an unproductive season in the 3-4. I wonder how long the knee was bothering him before they put him on IR...apparently Bush's knee condition didnt just happen either, and it's hard to play your best football with a bad wheel. the best scenario if Vilma was to remain a Jet would be a full recovery from his surgery, and getting back to playing at the level he used to play at. Obviously, two ILBs are needed in the 3-4, and I have heard Vilma say that he and Harris dont even play the same ILB spot as each other- that one of them is the Sam and one is the Will. He said that in his last Benigno interview. Barton will be going into his 11th season, and he is surely not a long term solution at the other ILB spot.
Thanks for the reply. Honestly, I didn't notice them playing together that much this year. Be that the case, it is apparent that Harris is a much better performer in this D than Vilma. The knee injury is the wild card, but as much as I hate to admit it because I respect the guy so, I'm beginning to think maybe a trade is the best option. I'd just like to find a way to get the most production out of Vilma if we can't find good value in a trade. To just give up on him and dump him cheaply would be a heartbreaker. Are there any teams out there who are going to be in dire need of a MLB next year? If he had to be traded, I would accept a first or a second and third. Am I way off?
They did play together when Harris was in the game, but, remember, our DL was so terrible early on, that Harris, until he became the starter much later, was also largely non-productive (save for a flash of brilliance here and there, similar to Vilma) We really don't know what they can do together behind an improved (though unspectacular) DL
I'd love JV and DH to play together but will JV be the same player when he gets back - or should we listen to reasonable offers for him?
Harris got PT in every game this year, and each week he got more and more reps. he was in there a lot even befor he was starting. They have done a good job working him into the lineup and developing him to the point where he has been playing lights out. If the jets could get a second and a third for JV, i think they should definitely pull the trigger on that deal. I really dont think they are going to get a first round pick for him- in fact, right now, i dont think Vilma is even tradeable, due to his surgery. If he had microfracture surgery, and has a long rehab, or even any setbacks during the rehab, i think he may start next season on the PUP list. That makes it next to impossible to trade him. The ravens expressed some interest in him a while back...
OK, David Harris is officially a keeper for next season. He really has stepped up and looked good. Congrats to him!
I like what i see from Harris. The only thing that scares me..is he may not have much upside. He appears to be a "what you see is what you get" type of player.
