It just says that the Jets met with him today, it went well, and that they could sign him as early as today, according to the Daily News. Also, since Abe was traded, they have $8.3 milion, so it allows them to go after Runyan hard.

8.3 more you mean, we have over 20 available now, half of that is for draft picks, so yeah, we have enough for 3-4 FAs if we want to spend it all on decent guys who could start...

Yeah but don't overpay ... I like Runyon a lot, but don't overpay for a 33 Year old RT Just because we have money to spend ... the big {long term} contracts should be reserved for younger players in my view

But I would like to add, I don't mind paying Runyon a hefty amount so long as it's not a long term committment with a big cap hit in years two and three as well ... front load the deal and make the player cuttable down the road if necessary

Anyway, don't get the wrong idea, Runyon is a All-Pro caliber RT and I want him bad ... All-Pro caliber player who fills a huge need ... but like I said, I'd feel better about it if the big hit is front loaded

At least once we sign Runyon, all this talk of drafting Brick at #4 will be over.

Finally won;t have to read anyone crap about him.

Negotiations were ongoing yesterday between the Jets and veteran free-agent offensive tackle Jon Runyan.

Runyan, entering his 11th NFL season, played the past six seasons with the Eagles. He is believed to have narrowed his choices down to the Jets and Eagles. He and his family lives in Mount Laurel and he is said to want to remain in the area.

Runyan, 32, visited the Jets on Wednesday, and the club is very interested in signing him. Besides the Eagles, the Ravens are also said to be interested but Runyan has yet to visit there.

The Jets are also interested in veteran offensive tackle Brad Hopkins and recently had discussions with his agent, Mark Bartelstein. Hopkins has also visited the Jets.

we had around 14 mil before, abe's gone, but we've signed 3 players so far...so i'd imagine (since no one but the NFL and Jets ever know what the exact numbers are) that we are probably around a little less than 20 mil under

if we sign him i dont expect it to be for much more than ashworth signed for, or if more, not that much more, since he's younger than runyan and also someone we were interested in

Why would it be over??? Runyan is a RT - Brick is a LT -- they play different positions

Adrian Jones would move to left tackle. He has the speed and strength..just needs the technique improved..Hence Tony Wise being the OLine Coach.

These guys have a master plan.

Runyan is still a very good run blocker, so that will help our RB's tremendously. This would be a very good move.

Jones moved to left tackle last season and I believe he was drafted as our potential LT of the future. Hopefully we will see more improvement from him with another year under his belt, maybe some better OL coaching (though I don't know much about Wise and what I've heard has been mixed), and hopefully a healthy line with Kendall back at LG.

Jets closer to Eagles OT Runyan

    BY RICH CIMINI
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Jon Runyan may change his shade of green and move up Jersey Turnpike to sign free-agent deal with Jets.

The Jets were awaiting a decision last night from free-agent right tackle Jon Runyan, who appeared to be leaning toward the Jets over re-signing with the Eagles.

If the Jets land Runyan, widely regarded as the top offensive lineman still on the market, it would be their most expensive offseason addition - and it might shed some light on their draft plans.

With Runyan (6-7, 330) and Adrian Jones, who finished last season at left tackle, the Jets would seem less inclined to pick Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson with the fourth overall choice.

The other non-quarterback near the top of many draft boards is North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams. The Jets already have signed a defensive end, former Steeler Kimo von Oelhoffen, and they still have a lot invested in Shaun Ellis.

By addressing both lines in free agency, the Jets might be thinking quarterback with the fourth pick. The Jets have arranged a private workout with Texas' Vince Young, who reportedly will audition for team officials on Monday. They probably will have private sessions with USC's Matt Leinart and Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler, the other top quarterback prospects.

With about $20 million in cap room, the Jets have made a lucrative offer to the 32-year-old Runyan. His agent, Ben Dogra, said he was engaged in discussions with the Jets and Eagles. As of late afternoon, Runyan hadn't made a decision, Dogra said.

"Coach (Eric) Mangini and his staff made an excellent impression on Jon," Dogra said in an E-mail. "Philly has been home for Jon for a long time, and that makes it a difficult decision for him."

Runyan didn't return a message on his cell phone. On Wednesday night, he said he wasn't expecting the Eagles to make a competitive offer. Runyan, an Eagle since 2000, might be on the downside of his career, but he's still considered a strong run blocker.
