He does tend to be inconsistent..how much of that is scheme and the match ups and personal performance, i dont know. What i will say is that 15 Lbs isnt making a difference w/ Drob's performance at NT. His physical limitations at the spot are more a lack of a wide base and having such short arms. I strongly doubt adding weight or even strength would make that much of a difference.
He could have, but he likely would have sacrificed the rest of his career to fit the scheme of a coach who may not last 3 seasons with this team.... He was drafted and given a huge contract because he is a physical freak, with an uncanny combination of a low center of gravity, decent weight, excellent strength and freakish speed... At his size, he would never be anything more than an above average NT.... Adding weight would sacrifice that speed, which is his best asset..... Honestly, all this talk of dealing players because they don't fit Mangini's scheme bothers me because, quite frankly, if he lasts to next year, I don't believe he will last much longer than that.... These players, on the other hand, are here for the longhaul... Dealing proven talent to fit the scheme of an unproven coach seems foolish to me
This is a concern for me too, but what can the Jets do about it? If they don't get the 3-4 talent in here then they are absolutely guaranteeing that Mangini will fail. If they do trade the 4-3 talent for 3-4 talent they have at best a coin-flip that he makes it at this point. That's what bad management does to a team.
Yeah it's a tough situation.... In hindsight, our management would have been wise, during the hiring process after the 2005 season, to look for candidates that fit the personnel we already had, as opposed to settling for a man they believed was the closest thing to Belichick, regardless of his coaching philosophy.... It's tough for me to decide which way I want the franchise to go, because it's always tough to start over with a new HC... That being said, you and I have agreed for a while that Mangini is not likely to bounce back from a 3-13-ish finish... That combined with the likeliness of forfeiting such talented players as Robertson, Ellis, and Vilma by keeping Mangini around makes me lean towards hoping he is dismissed as soon as possible, in favor of someone who uses a 4-3 philosophy.... Of course, the ideal situation would be for Mangini to stick around, but allow a 4-3 DC to come aboard and taylor the scheme to the talent we have on defense, but, from what we've seen from Mangini, he seems too stubborn to let something like that happen...
Well, if the Jets really think Mangini is a smart, motivated coach with the ability to improvise and win in the NFL they might just tell him to buck up and win with the talent he has on defense. In this case necessitating a switch back to a 4-3. If Mangini is only able to coach a 3-4 then we already have our answer as to how good a coach he will ultimately be in the NFL because his 3-4 really sucks. On the other hand if he's actually really head-coaching material he probably should be thinking about what will work given the people he has on hand plus a few reasonable additions on the defensive side. Note that the current incarnation of the Patriots offense is designed to laugh really hard at a 3-4 defense en route to a blowout win as they did at Dallas...
I'm sorry, but the idea of choosing a head coach based on fitting the personnel of a 4-12 team would have been a dreadful and short-sighted decision. Let's be honest, with the lack of a DT to pair with Dewayne and the free agency of Abraham/lack of pass rush, they didn't have the personnel to play a 4-3 then or now.
Make him a DE, I think he can do it, he has a nice quick 1st step and several swim and rip moves that can get him past the avg Tackle in the NFL and get him plenty of stops and sacks.
We take a guy like Dorsey in the draft...and we WOULD have a decent 4-3 line-up..and we'd even be able to keep Vilma! Ellis- Dorsey- D rob- BT Barton Vilma Harris Dyson Revis Rhodes Smith Granted, we wouldnt have a great outside pass rush. But I think the run D would be alot better and we'd have alot more strengths than weaknesses.
How much longer is Drobs Knee going to hold out? Just enough for a Big contract????? I'd hope they could get something for him now and somehow properly fill that NT spot....
I wouldn't have a problem with that (though do Harris/Barton have the speed at this point for OLB?). My comments were more about the fact that 2 years ago, they should have hired a 4-3 coach because of the players that were left from a 4-12 team in 05.
If teams want him and will compensate us for him then it would be most beneficial for us to get someone perfect for the scheme and not try to make something out of nothing. If it doesn't work out like that throw him on the end and hope for the best. Bottom line get him out the middle.
