Twenty-five years ago, the Dolphins defeated the Jets in an AFC championship game best remembered for the field conditions, not the players. It was played on a soggy cow pasture known as the Orange Bowl, and the Jets complained that Miami coach Don Shula purposely left the field uncovered for a rainstorm on the eve of the game because he felt it would negate the Jets? superior team speed. To this day, many Jets players and coaches still would like to kick Shula?s asterisk. The game became known as The Mud Bowl. On Sunday, the Jets and Dolphins will meet in The Dud Bowl ? the 2-9 Jets versus the 0-10 Dolphins, who will be 0-11 when they lose Monday to the Steelers. That the Dolphins are struggling is no surprise; they?re rebuilding under first-year coach Cam Cameron. The Jets, on the other hand, were a playoff team only last season. If they were to lose to the Dolphins, which is quite possible, it would be one of the low points in franchise history ? and that?s saying something, considering this is a franchise that once employed Rich Kotite as its coach. The Jets, Chiefs and Ravens have separated themselves into an ignominious group ? 2006 playoff teams that have bottomed out in 2007. As we all know, it isn?t easy to make the playoffs two straight years in the parity-driven NFL, but it?s downright embarrassing when teams disappear from the playoff landscape the way these three have done. So while everybody else focuses on the playoff races as the regular season heads into the final month, we?re going to celebrate The Three Stooges ? the Jets, Chiefs and Ravens. On Thanksgiving, the Jets became a national laughingstock, losing to the Cowboys, 34-3. Afterward, wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, always thoughtful and optimistic, stepped out of character with this stinging assessment: ?If a person hadn?t seen us play this year and they watched this game, they?re probably saying, ?The Jets suck.?? So true. UGHHHHHHHHHHHH
Who cares what other people think? Most fans last year thought the dolphins would be great and the jets would suck. It's been a down year, but the Jets will beat the dolphins, and they can beat the chiefs at home. This team hasn't gone back to back years without a playoff appearance since 2000 and I don't think it will happen for a while. This team first and foremost needs Kellen to be the guy and just continue to draft well
The Jets lost to a winless Colts team ages ago so this wouldn't be the lowpoint... I forget the Colts team's record at the time though.
You see this happen all the time (playoff teams falling off the following year). Don't know why this writer is trying to make a story out of this. None of these 3 teams were great last year anyway.
cotch is right. the jets really do suck. there's no sugar coating it anymore. we can't even suck while being exciting and/or interesting to watch. we suck, we're boring, and we're irrelevant. i am tired of those who say "who cares what the national tv audience thinks of us". well, I CARE. all the other teams seem to have a flashy player or two, some hype, some excitement, EVEN IF THEY SUCK. blarg!
Very true, tired of the excuses why we suck. I always just wanted for these guys to be competitive, now we are back to being bouring.
What's disturbing is that we really have no player who is "the face of the franchise". It used to be Martin, then Chad, then Vilma. So now who is there to drive Jersey sales?? Jets will be lucky to get one player in the Pro-Bowl this year....and it's a special teamer! Irrelevant?? Yeah, that is the perfect way to describe the Jets in the eyes of the average NFL fan.
Two years in a row of only having a special teamer in the Pro Bowl has got to be some kind of record.
I don;t think a loss to the Dolphins would be a low point. In other years when we were clearly the better team, and lost due to a poor effort or we played flat, was much more of an embarrassment. There are many examples of this.
Miami sucks and we suck doesent really matter what happens dont think people around football will really give a shit there too buisey watching the patriots go undefeated
Actually, better then that is the fact that the Patriots were the only win for two 1-15 teams in the 70s.
One of those three teams will recover a bit by the end of the year. They were my three disappointments in the preseason predictions and I usually get 2 out of 3 not 3 out of 3.
