http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3120573 Not sure this award went to the right guy. Both obviously had good seasons, but let's be honest, if not for the Mets losing their division (and they lost it, Philly didn't win it), would Rollins still have been selected?
What a joke. Note to all pretty good players on mediocre teams out there, run your mouth before the season starts and if your team manages to sneak into the playoffs you'll win an MVP award. It's not quite as big of a joke as Rollins winning the gold glove, since he's at least a pretty good hitter compared to being one of the worst defensive SS in the league, but I mean, he's not even the most valuable guy on his team. This was Wright's award but unfortunately some pathetic play from his teammates down the stretch cost him the award and handed it to an undeserving one.
In answer to your question, I absolutely believe that Rollins would have won it even if the Mets hadn't blown the division (I, along with others, was saying that all through September, and gave it my official stamp on September 28 in this post). As to whether it was deserved, even the most cursory glance at the statistics makes it clear that it was not.
I don't know what more the guy had to do to be deserving of the MVP. He put up some unbelievable #s this year on his way to leading his team to the division title.
We have very different definitions of unbelievable numbers. He did not even lead his own team in HRs, RBI, BA, OBP or slugging percentage. His OPS was about .820, which is hardly MVP-worthy in my book.
It was the combination of his #s that made them unbelievable. 300 BA 30 HRs 94 RBIs 139 Runs 41 SBs 38 Double 20 Triples That is an MVP year, ask any Phillies fan who the MVP of that team was, without hesitation it would be unanimous for Rollins.
Rollins had almost 200 more PA then Utley and Utley still had the higher VORP. Sure, he had a nice year and put up alot of pretty numbers in his almost 800 PA's but it was hardly an MVP season.
it was a ridiculous selection. I wouldn't have had Rollins higher than 5th on my ballot, considering that you can make the argument that he's the 4th most valuable player on his team.
Rob Neyer on how the voting is inconsistent from year to year http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blo...spn/blog/index?entryID=3120634&name=Neyer_Rob Don't have insider, though
Wright's award? What shit are you smoking? I told you Rollins would win. I also told you Byrnes would get votes.
I have family down in Cherry Hill who don't think that Rollins was the MVP of the Phils, let alone the NL. A-Rod's year = Unbelievable. Rollins' year = not so much.
Interesting, I'm in that area as well and every Phillies fan I know has been pimping Rollins since the end of the season. I wasn't trying to suggest he had the kind of year ARod had but compared to the competition in the NL, IMO he was as worthy of this award as anyone else.
Dayne Perry also thinks Wright should have won it. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7470516 So there seems to be a few who think that way.
What a great analysis of the NL MVP candidates. Is this guy actually a sports writer? He's making too much sense.
