Jets LB Vilma to have surgery on injured knee on Wednesday

    Associated Press

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma will have surgery to repair his injured knee on Wednesday.
    New York Jets

Coach Eric Mangini said Tuesday that the procedure will be performed in Florida, where Vilma is from. Mangini was typically tightlipped about the operation and wouldn't reveal the nature of the surgery.

    "It's just surgery," Mangini said.

Vilma, out for the season after being placed on injured reserve on Oct. 27, said last week that he was mulling surgery for what he described only as "a regular knee injury." He and the team have also refused to specify which knee is affected.

"There's a lot of different issues that are involved and really, specifically with the injury, I'm not going to cover that," Mangini said. "It's always the same process that you go through with making sure you've done all the research and been as thorough as possible before making a final decision."

Vilma was hurt in New York's loss at Cincinnati on Oct. 21, missed practice the following week and then placed on IR. Although Vilma's agent, Mitch Frankel, said the injury isn't career-threatening, Mangini and the linebacker have declined to give any additional details because it's the Jets' policy to not discuss injuries.

Mangini also offered no timetable on when Vilma is expected to return or if he'll be ready for training camp.

"Really, all we're looking at right now is the next step, which is the surgery, and then we'll take it from there," Mangini said.

On the radio today, Vilma STILL wouldn't specify what knee, or what kind of surgery it is...

I'm willing to bet it is exploratory surgery, with regards to his 'lingering' knee issue that was reported during the NFL combine....

Who knows though? We probably won't until either A) Mangini is gone or B) Vilma is gone

There is no such category as "normal" surgery. It's either minor, like scoping or maybe a meniscus, or there's major, like torn and ripped ligaments.

It's complete BS that Mangini & Co won't tell us anything about this...

Vilma's on IR, so the competitive advantage angle is gone...

Any team that trades for Vilma will have to give him a physical before the trade goes through, so hiding the details doesn't help his trade value...

It's so absurd that they won't just tell us about it

I agree, but they're still within their rights to NOT tell us.

What a dick bag; this is getting old.

What the F difference does it make to tell us what is going on at this point...it's not like he's duping the injury report.

its almost like he is just trying to be a douche. and he is succeeding with this line of crap about injuries.

there is not telling people everything and then there is being a douche about not saying anything at all about anything that might pertain to nothing.

yeah mangina needs to be punched in the balls for this one. then i will come out and say that he is questionable with a minor ball bag/gonad injury that will not require surgery but will keep him from touching himself late at night.

see i laid it all out on the table.

Vilma to undergo knee surgery today
    Wednesday, November 07, 2007
    BY DAVE HUTCHINSON
    Star-Ledger Staff
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- LB Jonathan Vilma, who was placed on injured reserve last week with a knee injury, will have surgery today in Florida, coach Eric Mangini said yesterday.

As first reported in The Star-Ledger, Vilma has bone chips or fragments in his right knee and they'll be removed. It likely will be an arthroscopic procedure to clean out the knee. Such a surgery usually sidelines a player four to six weeks, and Vilma conceivably could have had the surgery immediately after the Bengals game on Oct. 21 and returned late in the season.

However, Vilma opted against that course of action. After debating on whether or not to have surgery, he has decided to have it done in Florida by a doctor of his choice, not the Jets' team doctors.
    --------------------------------------------------

Vilma will have the surgery in his home state of Florida, likely by Dr. John Uribe, the team physician for the University of Miami football team, who has been referred to as the "family physician" for former Hurricanes players such as Vilma.

Man Mangini is being a real jackass about this whole thing. Like others have said, if you do actually trade him you have to give these details anyways. Why not just tell people what's wrong with him?!? Fans like myself would like to know what is wrong with one of my favorite players on this team.

It's in Vilma's best interest to not discuss the injury with the media..It's no one's business really except Jonathan, his agent's and the jets.its his freakin knee, he's on IR..move the F**k on...jeez

We're fans of this team, and Vilma has been one of our top players for a few years now.... I think we deserve to get a little information, provided, of course, it doesn't hurt the team to have it out in the open... And telling us more wouldn't hurt anyone...

I hear ya...but it could hurt the team's trade value for him. I think the FO is playing this right IMO. We (public/fans) don't need to know anything.... only that he's have surgery. Again if any team gonna pull the tigger for him he has to pass a their physical regardless. Remember Lee Suggs he didn't pass our physical so the trade was voided.

At least there is a 50/50 chance of being right. I wish our defense had those odds at stopping the run.

If there ever was a trade it would be contingent on Vilma passing the team's physical.

the less information the media has, the less of a chance they'll blow up this story. i'm assuming that's Mangini's train of thought.

Talk about a tough head coach, the man talks to the media and Mangini is putting him under the knife.

Considering that this surgery is not going to impead Vilma in an adverse way down the line, what do you guys think we could get for a healthy Vilma in the offseason?
