Didn't see this posted yet and thought it warranted a place. For those going to the game Sunday, the honorary captains will be the mother and brother of Mike Murphy, the Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in Afghanistan. In addition, prior to the kickoff the Jets will honor all the men and women who serve in the forces. I know Kellen will receive a big round of applause, the least we in attendance can do is show these folks that their sacrifices are remembered and appreciated with an even more thunderous welcome. From T-Rocks Blog... http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/blog/2007/11/patrick_murphys_family_to_be_h.html Michael Murphy's family to be honored by the Jets By Tom Rock The mother and brother of recent Medal of Honor winner Michael P. Murphy of Patchogue will serve as honorary captains for the Jets when they face the Redskins on Sunday, one of the events in the eighth annual Jets Military Appreciation Day. Murphy, a Navy SEAL, was killed in Afghanastan on June 28, 2005, but not until after he heroically called in the position of his pinned-down unit. His mother Maureen and brother John will be presented with Jets jerseys and preside over the coin toss on Sunday. Prior to the kickoff, the Jets plan to honor all of the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. Murphy was the first sailor to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force, since the Vietnam War. His family was presented with the honor at the White House last month.
Thanks for the Heads up, I'm pretty much 99% on making KO's but I'll definitely get in a little earlier now. I saw his story on the news about what he actually did...pretty friggin' heroic.
236 views and 2 responses. Typical. I'm sure we can count on the rest being in the parking lot getting hammered because you know that's more important. Get in Early ya Drunks!!
im a former Marine and these are things that make you put things in perspective....If you think your having a bad day when we lose Sunday, think of this hero...
The stadium will be 40% filled tops when this happens. Sad, cause it is a good thing, but Jets fans at games suck. And I am sure they will continue to get worse with a 1-7 team.
Baamf, Thanks much for posting this. I was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne in Vietnam in 1969. Made it to the rank of 1LT... came home with the CIB and Bronze Star, so I know all about the sacrifices. I'm really glad the Jets are choosing to do this. Most of the major news channels never even covered it. The New York Slimes ran 64 front page articles on the supposed Abu Graab "attrocities" but chose to bury the news article of this CMH recipient on page 34 somewhere. I'm VERY proud the Jets are doing this and I'll be standing tall in the stadium on Sunday for the national anthem and to watch Kellen Clemens kick the livin' shit out of the Deadskins. Later pal.... Jets 27 Deadskins 17
10th Mtn Div here... ret. Been to Afghan back in 2001 - 2002. Armpit of the world. Now in Intelligence. This really makes the game itself kinda silly. This guy is a true American Hero.
Thanks for that, baamf. You rock. To everyone in this thread, on this board, and everyone who has ever served our Great Nation: I can't express how much I appreciate your service and how much I will always appreciate it. Safe passage and safe return to all of our brave men and women in the Armed Forces. WE LOVE YOU. God Bless America.
Hey DC, Welcome Home and thanks for your service. That being said, I'm taking my daughter and son-in-law to the game. He's a Redskins fan, but that ain't gonna stop me, my wife and my daughter from rooting for the Jets! Kellen Clemens is gonna rock today!
I won't be at the game, but I'll be visiting the "Traveling Vietnam memorial Wall" on Sunday and I'll be thinking of him also now. I was part of the Wall's 400+ motorcycle escort on Tuesday, a very moving ride.
