I think the reason Mangini didn't give the reigns to Clemens this week is because Pennington actually played pretty good on Sunday. I know it's a hard pill for many to swallow but it doesn't send a good message to the team that you get benched even if you do a good job. I think he needs it to be a little bit more obvious. Mangini is in the same situtation Billy boy was in, in late 2000 early 2001 with Bledsoe. At what point do you bench the starting veteran quarterback and bring in the young guy without destroying the locker room, also knowing that if it doesn't work out you could be without a job very quickly. Belichick got lucky Mo Lewis made his decision easier for him. Without that hit, Bledsoe would have been the QB in NE that year for most of the season - Guaranteed.
Exactly, and Pennington came in and played pretty damn well. Everyone knows the story from there. Clemens is mid way through his second season. No reason to believe that he's playing like crap in practice. In his one regular season appearance he got it together and started tearing up Baltimore in Baltimore...not an easy place to play. I'd say that and his preseason play are more reason to think he'll play well then be a bust.
Me neither. In fact, I've never even seen someone named potential play a game. I suspect this is not a coincidence.
I think Chad is still starting, because Mangini is already butting heads with many players. Vilma & Baker come to mind. Chad is probably a huge kiss up & a good soldier. One of Eric's few veteran allies. If he benches Chad, he may lose a powerful locker room ally, and cause a bigger rift between Mangini and players.
Although we are operating in darkness, i think you're on to something here. we are barely seeing the tip of the iceberg (and if i think of any more cliches, I'll throw them in too) I think there really is some dissension between the CS and some of the players, and a lot of it started with the kendall thing. i know there are some blustery souls out there who will yell "get rid of the malcontents" but the reality is, if mangini doesnt change some of HIS ways, he'll lose the new players too. it's just a matter of time. Him starting chad again may be poiltically motivated on his part to not lose even more of the vets.
What is perceived to be a problem really is not. Bringing Clemens in will let Mangini know exactly what Malcontents to show the door when Chad is Cut or traded this off season. Coles will definitely complain and we can still get a first day pick for him. As long as we have Cotchery, Washington, Mangold, Harris, Rhodes, D'Brick and Brad Smith who are the young Nucleus of the Clemens lead team who cares what the other say. They will be long gone by the time the team is rebuilt anyway so their b**tching will speed up the process of getting them out the door. We are 1-6 with them and we can go 1-6 without them! Who cares what they say. With this record nobody can say a word.
Lets face it whatever organisation anyones in , if things aren't going right people always want to blame someone other than themselves.
actually, i think your selling yourself quite a bit short. you seem to know more than most on this board. i seem to remember not too long ago there were many on this board claiming the jets would go 12-4 or 11-5 this season and take the afc east crown. i don't remember many(hobbs.scottjets, etc. i also remember all the clowns that were saying randy moss/welker was washed up and over rated and that i was a fool for thinking they were going to make the patsies major dangerous.. who were those homers again?? hmmm, ya, i sure!!!
Except he really did not have a good game. He threw one very good pass to Coles and Coles broke another, but aside from that he was pretty much as awful as he has been all year. And, when the pressure is on late in the game, he has consistently folded. He is not making good decisions either. There is really no reason to play Chad anymore, except for fear of player reaction who view a QB change, even to a better one, as throwing the towel in on the season.
Wow this guy is insightful. All those amazing drives in the Baltimore game and those deep connections in the preseason were just smoke screens to cover up the poor second round pick. Little known fact- Kellen Clemens actually has cerebral palsy and we drafted him for the altruistic high.
