Hard to believe but I think last year's 10-6 record was a big mistake. This team was never very good, but beacause of strenght of schedule and a few breaks, I believe the management team thought they we're closer to contention than was actually the case and it will cost this team big time for the next few years. How else could we explain trading half the draft away for a few defensive players in Revis and Harris and trading down in the second round for Jones. This team obviously needed some major influx of talent in the draft but the thinking was that getting a few defensive players would let match us up with the Pats. This team needs another 2 or 3 years of slowly bringing in young talent and molding them into a contending team.
You are overlooking two major factors: confidence and momentum. Last year we had tons. This year we have none.
Last yr was not a mistake. Last yr's team was MUCH better than this team. You say the schedule was easy? Well look at the teams that the jets have played in the last 4 wks. 3/4 of them were 1 win teams at the time. Last yr the jets beat the bad teams, this yr they can't even do that.
That one playoff year gave this team a false sense of where it was in the rebuilding mode. IT WAS FAKE. I would give up that 10-6 year against crappy opponents to know that this team had a plan for the next 2-3 years for building a championship team. I would rather this team suck for the next couple years, build up some draft picks and contend for REAL.
The Jets traded a few future picks to support last year and consolidated picks this year. They very much look like a management team that is either not rebuilding or does not understand how to rebuild. We're kinda screwed either way as fans.
Our Canadian friend is absolutely right. The Jets were not as good as their record indicated last year. Not drafting to solidify the lines was a big mistake.
This makes no sense. The Lions have stunk and had top 5 picks every year and have not made the playoffs yet in this decade. The Bucs sucked from the early 80s to the late 90s getting top 10 picks and could never compete. The Colts for years before they got Peyton Manning were terrible finding moderate success only a couple of times. The Cardinals have had top 10 picks for years but have made the playoffs only one time since going to Arizona. The Bengals???? etc. etc. etc.
We should have drafted on both lines like it was going out of style. If indeed the CS thought that we were 2-3 players away then they truly are morons.
Last year was not a mistake. How we viewed last year may have been. Trading up for Revis and Harris gave us 2 players who both look like good players, but we gave up a lot of extra picks and extra talent, and we viewed ourselves as a better team than we really were. Last year we got very lucky, winning most close games. This year, we've gotten no breaks and come up short in every close game.
What makes no sense to me is why this team thought that we we're a few draft picks away from competing with the Pats. We we're obviously not as good as our record indicated..and the points for and against will surely back that up. The first draft in the post Herm Edwards era was very good, especially if Clemens can turn out to be a descent QB, and what we needed in last year's draft was more of the same. Stockpiling good young draft picks IS the way to build a contender!
when did the front office come out and say they thought they were only a few picks away??? maybe they liked quality over quantity in the past draft. we have some pieces now. but we are still 2 good offseasons at least from being a SB contender.
Quality over quantity is a losing proposition in the NFL because injuries over talent is how the game actually works. The Jets have gotten stupid lucky the last couple of years with injuries and very much so this season and yet they're still terrible. Imagine what we would be saying right now if Revis or Harris had gotten injured?
Schedule?! The teams we're playing suck! Only, we suck worse! Somehow we have gone from the playoffs to being the worst team in football
Interesting -- Bill Belichick had an 11-5 season, and then the next year he followed it up with 5-11. [scratching head]
fourth worst...we would also beat the rams (without stephen jackson and hes still hurt) and the falcons
Don?t make yourself sound foolish by trying to compare Bill Belichick with a coach who has 11 career wins.
Hey, every coach has to start somewhere, and the truth is that Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells both went through growing pains. Mangenius was bound to, as well.
