last year when the jets had all their injuries Katnik was the 3rd string Center. If he was any good the would have put him at Center and put kendall back to LG. If Katnik was any good the 49ers would have put them on the roster instead of their practice squad. So this Kid isnt that good. They put Goodwin in front of him at 2nd string and goodwin was average. So Katnik must suck for the jets to put him at 3rd string. looks like Mangold will probley be are Center.

i hope we take mangold with the #29th pick.. he could be an all-pro for us for a decade.. he seems like he is eager to learn and get better and doesn't already think he is the best.. even tho he is the highest rated center (by far) in the draft..

He will still be their at 29 but mcneil wont. We may not even need mcneil thanks to Runyan if we sign him.

It was also Herm never giving any rookie offensive players anytime...he made Martin play hurt which I understand Martin wanted to play regardless...but you have to spell him a lot more than he did...all in all it took serious injury to get a rookie or an unproven player to get playing time.

I don't know much about Katnick other than Gragg told the FO that he has talent but he deserves a shot before we draft, don't you think?...it would allow us to pick another talent if he pans out

I posted this yesterday in a similar thread:

Herm IMO wasn't the best talent evaluator. He's the kind of coach that will do well with a team of solid vets that simply need a swift kick in the ass. Great Motivator.

He's not the kind of coach that will come in and say "hey this kid has potential. Let's give him a shot and see what he can do."

We barely saw Jericho Cotchery on the field (special teams aside) last season, as well as Justin Miller. Two guys who IMO have HUGE upsides. I also believe the only reason Cedric Houston saw so much action was because Herm really had no other choice.

Given the way things started off in 05, we definately should have seen more of these guys. Cotchery as a #2, and Miller opposite Law.

Anyway, this is most likely why we didn't see Katnik on the field. I doubt Herm even gave him a second glance.

Yaa that is true but if he was good he would have been the 49ers active roster and not the practice squad

You can't really say that though. Some times it takes guys a little while to grasp the feel of the NFL game. Maybe he wasn't ready with SF and was still learning. He may now be ready to take the next step.

He obviously has a good head on his shoulders. He played every position on the line in college. That's pretty impressive.

I love Mangold (not literally), but if we've got a guy with some potential, and Mangini thinks he can pull his weight, I'm willing to take a shot at him right now and look elsewhere at 29.

The 49ers drafted David Baas in the 2nd round last year, and he is a OG/OC. That may have been a reason to put him on the practice squad. I bet they also didn't think Katnik had the weight to play yet. He's now grown into himself and deserves an opportunity to fight for a roster spot. Who knows how good this guy can be? I doubt he will be much more than a backup, but good OL depth is needed.

I wonder if all this talk about Katnik is a smokescreen b/c our FO loves Mangold so much. If so, SHHHHH.

Based on what I know right now I would choose Mangold hands down.

What I'm saying is I'm fine with passing him up and giving Katnik a chance if EM thinks he can play the position effectively.

Yeah, everybody knows that O linemen NEVER develop into anything special. Oh, by the way.... Atlanta led the league in rushing, and none of the starting O line were starters in their rookie years... all late draft picks. Knowledge like this is what makes this board special.

So I am not the only one

Not drinking the Katnik KOOL Aid Huh? Great point. He should have at least played some, lets see what he can do, afterall we were not going anywhere, blame herm all you like for not playing young guys, Erik Coleman, kerry Rhodes,Mark Brown , Cothcery, Miller, etc all played all played some whether it was due to injuries or not. Mawae was out, Kendall was not doing great at Center and Goodwin was playing. How come he didnt even play , Someone here said he dressed ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!1

And because Herm (of all people) didn't let him dress for games, he has no shot at ever being an NFL starter.

    Yeah. Great point.

Not saying that at all, but we should have seen him in garbage time at least once, even Jovan Witherspoon and Dante Ridgeway played in garbage time, yet the best Oline prospect according to Cimini didnt see the field, That doesnt sound right, does it?

i think you should stop hating untill you see him play.. what are you scared of we dont draft mangold if the jets really like Katnik?if thats the case we dont even know if mangold is on the radar.

i dont understand how any of you can have a case against a guy none of us seen play / or even payed attention too. draft position means nothing. some of the best ofensive lineman in the nfl were drafted in the late rds. matt birk a top 3 center was draft in rd 7

So Belicheck, Parcells, Shanahan,Cowher,Holmgren, Reid Vermeil etc would have played him? What have you seen him do to make you so sure that herm just did not like him. I personally have never seen him play, but i just wonder why he didnt get a shot when our line was devastated.

no one knows... we know just as much as you. thats why your reason for a bashing a guy you have never seen play is ridiculous

Didn't say Herm "just did not like him". I'm saying Herm was a bad evaluator of talent. He wouldn't know a promising rookie if one landed on his boney little head.

And your question about Belicheck, Parcells etc was just ridiculous. That doesn't even deserve a response.
