Alright lets say we do go defensive with the 4th pick which one do you think we'd pick?? Which one would help our team out more??
A.J Hawk. If we go to the 3-4 like I-dream-of-mangini is going to then Vilma and Hawk would be a terror in the back field which would make it very hard for teams to run on us. Go Jets
either wil be vicious, hawk nad vilma woud terrorize people, but mario is the second coming of J abe.
Hawk...I am one of the few that feels VanOl,Ellis and B. Thomas, thats correct, B.Thomas will be good in the 3-4. Thomas was always solid against the run and he takes on blocks well. This will free up guys like Hawk and Vilma to have some fun and destroy things. I am just not sure if I want to go defense at 4. Lets see how the rest of FA goes.
Williams would be our version of Richard Seymour...w/ even more upside. He is a no brainer if he's there at 4.
I think the pick all depends on whether the jets will convert to a 3-4 or stay as a 4-3. If the Jets stay in a 4-2 then mario and ellis would be ends and kimo and robertson would be tackles, otherwise the jets should go a.j hawk upgrading the LB to Vilma, Barton, Hawk and Hobson, while having Kimo, Robertson, and Ellis. Both picks are good for the jets, but mario appears as though he has more talent- 6'7' 290 4.7. My choice is mario if he is left, otherwise get ferguson. If Leinart drops to us(which he wont, because the titans will pick him or NO will trade down), then the jets should trade down
If the scheme is going to be primarily a 3-4 I say Hawk. The guy is 250 lbs and ran a 4.38 at the combine.. that's just as freakish as Mario's numbers. You've got to realize that LBs will be lining up all over the place in Mangini's defense. Hell with his numbers I would try him out carrying the ball or going out on pass patterns on offense!
Even if we DO switch to a full time 3-4...Williams will be a great fit. Think Richard Seymour. Williams has the rare talent to not only hold up in the 2 gap..but also provide great pass rushing ability/athleticism while pass rushing in the 3-4. W/ that said, we will have a hybrid defensive scheme that is neither a 3-4 nor 4-3..it will be a mix that creates confussion and mismatches for the opposition. D rob combined w/ Williams would be a nightmare for many O-lines.
I know that alot of people are convinced that D-Rob can't play in the 3-4 .... but I for one believe he can. He gets double teamed in the 4-3 ... so whats really going to be different for him except a change in responsiblity. He has the size, strength and speed to still be a force on passing downs ... and against the run he should be able to hold his ground so that the LBs can do what needs to be done. Just my opinion of course.
I like both guys as well and really hope we take one of them, even if Leinart falls, but I would have to lean towards Mario. There is a greater dropoff after him then in the LBs. Hawk is a stud, and he and Vilma would be unreal, but Carpenter, Ernie Sims, Demeco Ryans, Thomas Howard and even another U guy, Roger McIntosh could be dominant next to Vilma. Either in Green would make me very happy. I can see both of these guys contributing on O as well. Imagine Mario lined up in man outside w/a CB 1st and goal. Peppers does it, Mario can do it also. 6'7" and athletic.
In a few years, Abe will be a forgotten man and Mario will be the premiere DE in the NFL. He's not the second coming of J Abe, he's Reggie White's size with Bruce Smith's moves and speed. The sky's the limit for this kid, and I take him before I take Hawk. If he's gone, I'd still be happy with Hawk.
