They were miserable today... however... do you really want to blame them? Early in the game, the defense, along with the special teams, made EVERY effort to help the Jets not only get a lead, but to keep it. However, the Jets only capitalized once (the Brad Smith TD), but otherwise just flopped time and time again. The fact is, the ineffectiveness of the Jets offense allowed the Giants offense to keep the pressure on the Jets defense. In the NFL, defenses that stay on the field all game long, I don't care how good they are, eventually break down. That is what happed today. That is what will continue to happen as long as Pennington plays and the Jets offense can't score. Watch and see... once Clemens gets in and starts scoring, watch how the defense will suddenly magically look better. It happens all the time in the NFL. If you want to blame anyone, blame the coaches for not fixing a very obvious problem.
It isn't about being worn down. You can't keep trying to tackle somebody like Jacobs around the shoulders!
Sorry But the Defense Sucks --- We cannot stop the Run and cannot generate a Pass Rush. They are not the sole blame by any stretch , but dont fool yourself , even when we were ahead in this game - I kne they would blow it. When the Giants got the ball on the one Down by 3 , I told my Wife Game Over as I knew they would March it right down the field.
The defense would be better with a better offense keeping some pressure off of them. They still would not be a playoff caliber defense by any stretch of the imagination. If Chad starts the last 11 the Jets go 3-8 at best, maybe worse. If Clemens starts them we might get lucky and go 6-5. Probably more like 5-6 but it's obvious that even average QB play today would have gotten us a win when you take into account the 14 points we got from defense and special teams. God I hope Mangini is not just a blind faker.
No pass rush + no run stopping abilitiy + no truly good corners (although maybe Reevis will be) + playing a 3-4 defense without the right players= Bad Defense.
My whole point is this... a lot of bad defenses in the NFL don't look so bad because the offense is able to keep them off the field. Even if they aren't that good, if they are fresh, they will be much MUCH more effective than if they are not. The Jets had only given up 22 yards passing after the first half. That isn't bad... really. The fact is, they were on the field all day and got no help whatsoever from the offense. I bet if the Jets offense were actually to produce even on an average level, then the defense would look much better. I do agree with above poster who stated this isn't a championship caliber defense though.
So it's the offenses' fault that the Jets couldn't hold a ten point lead midway through the third quarter? It's the offenses fault that we gave up 300 total yards in the second half? Maybe there is actually some way to spin this and blame it on Chad as well? Give me a break with this. Chad stunk, the whole offense stunk, the defense stunk. The only bright spot was special teams. If everyone thinks that KC is just going to come in and we;ll start winning, you're in for a rude awakening. I think KC should start next week, but there are too many weaknesses on this team for us to have a dramatic turn around.
You do realize it was a very hot humid day and our O held the ball for under 7 minutes in the second half of this game. Our D was on the field the entire second half. They made the key stop and gave the ball back to the o with over 6:00 minutes down by 4 with 3 time outs.
I'm not blaming the offense for the defense's problem. I am pointing out that offenses that stay on the field generally translate into a better defensive performance. However, I will blame the offense for losing the game for the Jets. All of the Jets points came off of defensive turnovers and special teams. The one TD the offense got was a result of an interception on the Giants side of the field. The offense did not generate one single drive from their own side of the field. So while the defense was poor, it is not their fault the Jets lost the game. There is only so much you can do without any help whatsoever on the side of the ball. We don't have the 2000 Baltimore Ravens defense... we should stop pretending like they have to perform to their standard.
You make a good point though. Any defense would be demoralized heading into a game knowing that your QB can't throw the ball down the field.
The defense is pretty bad. I agree though that the defense could get a psychological boost from thinking that the offense might actually score if they cause a turnover or get good field position for them.
