I like some of the things that the new regime has done but some people on here actually think we might be competetive next year. Just look at each position, WHERE ARE WE STRONG? QB- Pennington-complete ???, Ramsey-good signing but probably not the answer RB-Martin-still strong but how much left Blaylock-still question mark FB-???? WR-still don't have a #1 and McCarrens has been a bust OL-need three starters DL-lost the best pass rusher we had in Abe Ellis had awful season last year definately need upgrage there LB-Vilma a star but if we are going to play 3-4 need more linebackers Secondary- lost the best one we had in Law so we have Barrett=inconsistent and Miller-???? saftey position is not bad Summarize there is not a position on the team where we do not need work we are 2-3 years away from a good team Biggest question marks are at qb and running back but this team has never looked worse than it does right now
That is true I forgot about our punter. He may be the second best player we have on the team right now. Sorry about that. You are right
The offseason is still a work in progress. Wait to see what the team looks like come Sept before passing judgement on our strengths and weaknesses.
We have alot of speed and athleticism on defense and some good veteran leaders on O. The draft will determine what our strenths will be heading into the preseason.
No, but he has a point. Except for punter and LB, every name position in the Jets roster at present has either underwhelming or injury-compromised starters. We may have time to address this, but it's clear the new management has their work cut out for them to a greater degree than nearly any other NFL team.
Even at LB who do we really have other than Vilma Barton is coming off a serious injury and wasn't playing great before that Hobson-average all the other guys are good backups where is all this talent???
I agree with a lot of what you said in the original post, but you're also underrating some of the talent on this team. Specifically Hobson, since you pointed him out. Hobson is a very good player and will be a starter for a long time on the Jets. The guy is a tackling machine and has a nose for the ball. He's not fast, but he is quick. Our LB corps is one LB away from being a nasty 3-4 corps. I don't know what to think about our D-Line situation. I definitely don't think we have the right DL people for a 3-4, except Ellis. I know Von Oelhoffen has a good reputation but I haven't really seen him play all that much and couldn't give him an evaluation. Thomas is way undersized for 3-4 dline, and way oversized for LB. He is kind of screwed at this point I think... he will be a nice pickup for some team in next seasons FA. I can't imagine DeWayne in a 3-4... but who really knows? Our DBs are strong. We won't see the interceptions anymore that Law brought, but we won't see the penalties either. Barrett is another player that people constantly underrate. For every bonehead play he makes, he makes two spectacular plays. This guy is a solid #1 and mentor for Miller and Strait, who have both shown flashes that they will be good CBs. Rhodes and Coleman are solid starters, and I am comfortable with Washington as their backup. Basically our defense is the strength of this team. Defense wins championships. We will be fine.
Well we drafted a PK that was supposed to get us TBs as well so I guess that to now iis a area of concern
our secondary is not a strong point. Barrett is an average cb at best and Miller is a ?? the safety position is a little better but they still are not close to stars. The defense that played poorly last year is only worse this year since we lost the best dl and best cb we had. I don't understand how people are saying are defense is going to be good
Do you forget that the Jets defense was on the field for 40 minutes a game? That ALWAYS makes the stats look bad. Not to mention we lost our best defensive player from the year before (Eric Barton) and half of our defensive line (Ferguson to FA, Robertson and Ellis to injury by the midyear mark). And with ALL of that... the Jets still finished 12 in defense in the NFL, according to nfl.com. Now tell me, is that a defense that played BAD? I don't think so! They actually played remarkably well considering the circumstances. The fact is from the 2 years prior the Jets were in top 10 and top 5 on defense. Last year they finished 12 when fate threw everything except the kitchen sink at the Jets. Yes, the Jets did lose Abraham, but he was not the Michael Jordan of defensive ends like people make him out to be. The Jets defense is going to be restructured to play well without him, and it can be done. Teams always build around their best player, and when that player changes, teams adapt. The Jets will get over it, trust me. Further, the Jets defense will be better by the sheer fact alone that they can't POSSIBLY get worse on offense. It would be worse than a nightmare if they did. It would be hell. The Jets strength IS their defense, and will continue to be so.
Is there a position that team is strong at?? For a while, we were strong at being bent over, but now that has changed with the onset of Mangini and crew. Too early for me to judge this one yet.
And exactly how do they replace 10 1/2 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and 10 INT's? They let their two best defensive players from last year leave..
Defenses don't win championships. Great teams win championships, and they win it however they can. That line is the most overused ridiculous statement in football, equilvent to the myth that pitching wins playoff series in baseball.
