Rookie Revis looking confused when playing nickel back

Jets rookie CB Darrelle Revis began his tenure in New York looking like the best player on the defense, but he has hit a speed bump in recent weeks. A dynamite athlete whose instincts are also quite good, Revis has looked lost when offenses trot out three- and four-receiver sets. Instead of keeping his precocious rookie on the outside where we hear he?s more comfortable, head coach Eric Mangini has had Revis play inside as the nickel back in such situations. The decision centers around Mangini?s desire for all his cornerbacks to be able to play in a variety of roles, but the increased field awareness required of nickel backs has limited Revis? effectiveness. David Barrett remains the team?s most polished corner, but the hope is that immersing Revis into the complexities of the ?D? will pay dividends later.

I think we should play Revis anywhere that will help make him a better player one, two or three years from now.

It aint like we're making the playoffs this year anyway, much less winning the Super Bowl, so I say let the kid go through some growing pains and learn his position fully.

LOL I'm not a fan either. I agree with a long term plan so we have him polished...heck get everyone on the same page so if there is ever a need on a play others know the assignments of players closest to them. I think that philosophy will make our team elite....along with the right players.

^thas it right there...Nickelback blows goats and Ya gotta rebuild sometime...why not this year. It was great that we had the kind of success, albeit not as much, as Gruden had with Dungy's team. But then Tampa had to go back to rebuilding mode and come back with their new coach. We have to experience the growing pains sometime. We should do it all at once like a band-aid, and the time is now.

This is probably something Revis needs to work on then. There's no point of having a lone wolf on the defense, he needs to learn how to work with the rest of the secondary.

Did you not read the last sentence in the article? Because, when he knows ALL positions he'll be a BETTER player

Right now he is the leading tackler on the team (at any position). He has no picks and only 4 PDs. What does that tell you? That opposing QBs are picking on him on just about every play and they are completing the passes they are throwing. Revis has a long long way to go.

You have to remember the guy missed a lot of the preseason. Plus. he really did not have a good game against the Bills.

This rumorr mill in NY feeds off of this kind of stuff.

Mangini did the same thing with Vilma and DRob. Put them at a position that they are not suited for. So far the results are far from impressive. This may be Mangini's downfall. Instead of letting the players play at their natural position where they can excel, he is making them play at a position where they can't play well. Size, speed, quickness, smarts it's what should determine what position a player plays and not what Mangini thinks they should be playing because he likes a particular scheme. You shouldn't run a scheme if you don't have the right players for it. Mangini may be far from being a genius. We will find out in a few years. We can wait though.

You also shouldn't run a scheme you are not familiar with, and haven't coached or been around your entire coaching career. Guys, Mangini was brought into the NFL with the 3-4. Ever since he was a water boy and a gofer, the man learned the 3-4. Just because we have two out of place people doesn't mean you change the entire defense. It just means those two will be replaced in due time. I think the 10-6 season blinded a lot of people into thinking somehow this year would be a magical superbowl run. Check back in two years, if we still have Robertson on the nose, and vilma is still unproductive alongside harris and a new nosetackle, then i agree its time to either change scheme or change coach.

folks, revis is the least of our problems.....

the talent is there and will blossom come next year.

a very good pick for the team, along with harris.

the only other times i can recall seeing early glimpses of possible pro bowl level talent in 2 recent defensive draft choices for the jets was vilma in 04 and abraham in 00.

I agree Revis does have pro bowl potential. Although i believe Harris will be a really good player, i don't think as a 34 ILB he'll be getting enough glory or publicity to make a pro bowl. Both are going to be two solid contributors for this team for years to come. If we come out of next years draft with 2 more solid starters on defense, we'll be in really good shape.

<cough> <cough> Mangold <cough> <cough> (Yes he has been slow this year)

<cough> <cough> Rhodes <cough> <cough> (Yes he has been slow this year)

    Two other recent draft picks.

God I wish people with no idea what they are talking about would keep their useless opinions to themselves.
