You are absolutely right, of course (and I remember a game I listened to on Armed Forces Radio where the Jets actually did win 3-0. It bored me witless, but it was a win.) I think my point is that I'd rather see my team take risks and try to dictate to the defense what is going to happen. 'Taking what the defense' gives you is a fool's paradise. They're giving it to you because they're happy for you to have it. Why not go out there and take what you want? Taking what the defense gives you was epitomised in this game against the Bills. The Bills' defense gave the Jets short passes, to string out drives and wait for errors to stall them. When you advance in four-, five- and six-yard nibbles, a holding penalty, sack or dropped pass is a drive-killer.
"I started to follow the Jets when Ken O’Brien was approaching his short-lived peak, when Wesley Walker or Al Toon would glide under his deep balls, almost effortlessly putting six points on the board again and again." The good "old days"! I totally agree with your post but don't forget we also had the NY Sack Exchange and Freeman McNeil.
I got it at cardboardcutout.net, which is a UK-based company. It took them forever to send it to me and when it arrived, it was Jeremy Shockey. I gave him away and got the company to re-send Chad. By then, he'd done his shoulder a second time...
Post of the season! This really summed up how myself, and surely many of us are feeling. Especially those of us who are strong CP supporters. I do feel like shooting up some smack though.
Great post UK. The Jets are not just bad there worse than bad they have become boring. This team needs a lift and so do the fans. I know there was a huge thread about fans not making enough noise, I think the style we are playing and your post hits on that as well. Football is a very tough sport and what makes it exciting is big plays sometimes amazing plays pulled off with bodies flying all over the place. Big plays for the most part come off the arm of the QB and this team just doesn't get it's share of them. We all want to win but we also want to be wowed and excited and into it. Clemens gave us that for a brief few minutes, I want more and it's really not about Chad.
Funny thing about that game was that we actually rolled up over 300 yards of offense, we just couldn't score. Every time we got close some oddball thing would happen. Perfect example of how things aren't always what they appear to be by the numbers.
Joe Montana could throw the quick slant and 5-and-outs that were a staple of that offense. Those passes require a measure on velocity to complete that Chad can no longer provide to the ball. BTW, UK, that was a fantastic read, and pretty much sums my own feelings on the subject up to a T. You're the man.
Well I can only agree with you and what everyone else said about this analogy. I remember getting that charge when first witnessing Pennington play after taking over for Vinny. He did have that big arm; that throw caution to the wind attitude; that swagger and the ability to control a game. He even looked to be more mobile than he is now. He play-faked as if he meant it and it caused Ds to misdirect. Now it almost appears he's going through the motions, hoping he doesn't get hurt again. I am really ready to move on and hope there is someone like a Tony Romo in out near future. I want a mobile QB with a gun for an arm. Is that too much to ask?
One of the most cogent and well stated posts about Chad, his waning game and the fans reaction to it. I would like to make one amendment to your methadone analogy: This season the levels of methadone are being decreased more than expected by many, causing major jitters and shakes. Anyway: I especially liked your part about his supporting cast and the need for them to play great for us to win. Wouldn't it be nice having a QB who makes everyone around him better, rather than having everyone around the QB making him better?
