I am not familiar enough with previous examples of a 2QB system to say, but my initial reaction would be no. We either need a savior or a new scapegoat.
I just started a thread on something similar! My idea was to give Clemens the second quarter, and decide the starter for the second half at halftime based on first half performance.
Come on. Clemens struggled in the 2 minute drill against Baltimore. He had 2 delay of game penalties!
Clemens should be handed the ball. Plain and simple, we're all but out of playoff contention already. That said, it's time to work on next year, which entails evaluation of talent to determine need. Chad's time is done. Clemens has been earmarked as the future. Let him play.
Unfortunately, with the breadth of leadership placed at this position, QB by committee will never work. We go with Chad or we go with Kellen; there is no inbetween.
It seems like a nice idea, like with situational Runningbacks, but I doubt it'd work. The QB is a weird position...you're either the main guy, or you're not.
I think in the future you are going to see more of the 2 QB situation. It will place less emphasis on the QB as a single entity. You may see more Brad Smith types being used both at QB and WR. I think we may look back in 25 years and say to our grandkids "You know one QB used to play the entire game". The game is changing. Why ride your entire season on one player?
He hardly struggled... Let's compare Clemens final 2-min drill in week 2, to Chad's final 2 min drill in week 4.... Clemens 10 Plays 73 Yards Time Consumed: 1:35 TOs used: 0 Pennington 8 Plays 35 Yards Time Consumed: 1:31 TOs used: 1 So Clemens went 38 yards further in 4 more seconds, without using a time out. Also consider that when Cotchery got hurt, the Jets took a 10-second run-off, so really, without the injury, Clemens took 6 fewer seconds than Chad. You want to say it's not fair because of Cotchery's long run after the catch? Well first of all, a lot of that is brought about by the ball getting their quickly, but let's ignore that. Cotchery caught the ball about 22-25 yards down the field on his 50 yard reception. Let's round it down to 20, for your argument. So that'd be only 43 yards, if Cotchery just caught it and fell down... Still further than Chad moved the team. Against a better defense, DESPITE the delay of game, in less time (if Cotch just caught it and fell down, we would have saved at least 5-6 more seconds as well).... EDIT: Plus, only one of his DoG penalties was in the 2 min drill. Chad had two DoG penalties yesterday AND wasted a TO.... So much for being the wily, smart veteran...
I have mixed feelings on who should start, but that player should get the start for the entire game. If it's Chad and he has a terrible game, maybe we see Clemens late in the game, but then you commit to Clemens for the future.
Yeah and 3 touch down passes dropped. If only he had better hands.......... Edit: back on topic. Stupid idea. Either play him or bench him.
True, balls were dropped.. but the delay of games scare me... However, it may be time... I'd like to see against a team not as strong defensively as the Ravens if we'd be able to run the ball with more of a deep threat.
I would reverse it. Clemens most of the game and CP for the 2 minute. Pennington has shown that he can move the sticks down field in under 2 mins with out throwing the long ball. It's really the only time he impresses me in fact, the last 2 mins of the first half.
I got a better idea – start Clemens, give Chad back the clip board and if Clemens shows no promise in 12 games – get rid of both of them and draft a worthy starter. Two quarterback system…are you f’ing kidding me?
Come on, man, they sell tacos and bags of berries at their new stadium. That's right, I said bags of berries. And NO, the 2QB anything is for college. Bringing in Clemens for 2 minute drills would have Chad shitting diamonds.
