i heard at the time they were planning to cut mawae that there was a slight hesitation and maybe they should keep him around for mangold for a year or 2 to "prep" him.....wasn't sure how accurate that was but the jets apparently decided they wanted mangold very very early on that offseason - even before ferguson.

apparently, that idea was overruled by mangenius and he was subsequently let go.

it used to be common for a team with a good veteran center to take a young center out of college and start him at guard until the veteran gave way, then moving the younger player back to the center spot.

That would do nothing to solve our defensive problems... I know you're being slightly sarcastic, but if we could somehow get a draft with a NT with our first pick, a guard, a right tackle, and a tweener DE/OLB pass rush specialist, I'd be happy.

Yeah, Mawae was a beast for us. Though there was something about his attitude (not to be mistaken with his on the field attitude that you mentioned) that I didn't like so much. Abraham is dominant around 25% of a season at random intervals. I don't really miss either of them.

I think you misread. I said 7 lineman, not O-lineman. Both sides of the ball.

True. Because Mangold is the last center in the world

2 or 3 years left as a high-end center in the league... meaning it was not necessary to upgrade the position in the 1st round. I love Mangold and think he wil be great for a decade but in a team full of holes maybe we could've postponed drafting a new center until he was actually ineffective in 3 years. We could've drafted a lot of different players to fill many of the holes we had and still have.

Hahaha, come on, Jason Ferguson? He did end up playing solid for us eventually, but if I'm looking for players who defined success for the team, Turd Ferguson is not a player that comes to mind.

It was a thing of beauty the way mawae could flatten 2 linebackers on a play and still be sprinting down the field 5 yards ahead of c. martin. I would rewind and rewatch those plays over and over again.

You know who else is still looking good?

Jared from those Subway ads. I hope they keep using him in their commercials until he resembles a withered corpse, struggling to breathe.

    Monday Night Mawae

Anybody catch the Kevin Mawae show during the 1st half of the Saints-Titans game Monday night?

The announcers really focused in on #68 and how he was helping Vince Young lead the Titans down the field.

Another arrogant roster move by Tangini. I was sick watching it.

Mangold is great, but he's not Mawae yet. How much better would Mangold be if he was playing guard next to Kevin for a few years and learning the game?

I loved the guy when he was a Jet. I didn't consider his off the field behavior to be a problem until he went to Tennessee with all of that bad blood between him and the FO. IMO, he had reason to be upset, but shouldn't have made negative comments about his former team. It was the reverse of Kendall, who trashed the team while he was still here, but refused to be negative once he got his trade and his money.

I'm not sure placing Mangold at Guard for a few years would have been the best idea. It's a shame to draft someone first round and then develop him at a position you don't expect him to play long term. Yes, it would have made him a more diverse player, but you only worry about that with a backup. I doubt he would have been called upon to play G at any other point in his career.

Yes he looked pretty good. But what does he have left. Have you seen Fabini lately? He is now playing Guard for the Redskins. Makes me wonder what if the Jets made him change to Guard..
