Curtis Martin Day Set for Nov. 18 Published: 09-06-07 By Marissa Shorenstein Staff Writer The New York Jets today announced they will honor former running back Curtis Martin with a special halftime ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 18, when the Jets host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11 of the 2007 season. ?Curtis Martin is one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game and his impact on the New York Jets and the National Football League will never be forgotten,? said Jets Chairman and CEO Woody Johnson. ?While millions of people witnessed his amazing accomplishments on the field, few knew the depths of his philanthropy off the field. His drive to give back, especially to the New York area that became his adopted home, will be his lasting legacy from which all of us can draw inspiration. As a player, Curtis approached philanthropy the same way he approached the game: with humility and grace.? Martin retired on July 26 as the Jets' all-time leading rusher and the fourth all-time leading rusher in the NFL with 14,101 rushing yards on 3,518 carries (third all-time) and 100 touchdowns (20th all-time), including 90 rushing scores. Martin spent eight seasons with the Jets after being selected in the third round of the 1995 draft by the New England Patriots. The Jets signed Martin as a restricted free agent on March 20, 1998, and he officially joined the Jets on March 26. He went on to record seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with the Jets, retiring as the franchise?s all-time leading rusher with 10,302 yards. He was selected to five Pro Bowls and chosen by his Jets teammates as the team?s Most Valuable Player on four occasions. He was also named the Dennis Byrd Award winner as the Jets' most inspirational player in 2001, 2002 and 2003; the Ed Block Courage Award winner as the Jets' most courageous player in 2001, and the Kyle Clifton Award winner ("Good Guy Award" as voted by the Jets staff) in 2001. So are they going to announce the retirement of his number or what? This is meaningless to me if his number doesn't get retired. Also, I wonder if they will announce then that he's bought a stake in the team. We haven't heard a word about that since the day he hung up his cleats.
It'd be weird to have two 'Curtis Martin Days' a few years apart though.... I hope they do it sooner rather than later... I don't EVER wanna see #28 on a player in green and white again, I don't care if they keep him out of the HOF all together *cough* Klecko *cough*
This just in.. Martin will be honored at half-time at the Pats vs Jets game in Foxboro .. For his contributions in the Patriots organization ..
I think half the people on this board would commit suicide if that ever happend.. I wouldn't be surprised though if the Pats did that with the Jets favorite son..
Belichick's Pats? Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. Anyone else, I would be very surprised. You have to understand outside of New England no one really remembers Curtis as a Patsy.
