Instead of dwelling on our weaknesses, (Bender at LG OUCH!) one thing we could talk about is our strengths. Honestly our biggest strength is our special teams. I think we could possibly have the best special teams in the whole league and even the best special teams in Jets history. Nugent came on last year and if the preseason is any indication he is back on top of his game. We all know Graham is an outstanding punter, along with Justin Miller's amazing kick return ability Revis was outstanding returning punts in college and hopefully it can translate to this level. - (if not Leon Washington is a very good Punt Returner as well) We have probably the best special teams coach in the league, Westhoff. Also, you can't forget some of the unsung heroes of our special teams, like Brad Smith and Cody Spencer in kick coverage. This is one hell of a good special teams squad and should hopefully be able to steal a few wins for us this year - starting with week 1? thoughts?
As far as I can tell from last year and preseason, we are great on everything except punt returns, so if Revis could boost us in that area, it would definitley be the best in the league.
Special teams is the reason we won 10 games last year. We had a ton of hidden yards and special teams and returns almost never made us defend a short field.
We have a great special teams , Blocking aswell. I Think Revis if he plays Punt Returner will only make it better.
A great, valid point. There were numerous occasions where Graham's punt bounced to the 10 where the returner would make an attempt and Smith came out of nowhere to make the tackle. Nugent is finally earning his keep after having a rough start. They were also talking about Nugent putting in a lot of off-season work to strengthen his leg for kickoffs. It seems as though that has paid off compared to the kicks last year, which went to the 20. Plus I think he's a lot less homesick. Fucking Nugent never would make a journal entry on NYJ.com without mentioning going home and being near OSU. I think he's matured and likes where he is with this team. Miller's average will be at the top of the league again, hoping to improve it from a 28+ on returns, and Brad Smith is definitely our hidden treasure on Special Teams.
I'm praying that Bender will surprise everybody this weekend. And you know what the best thing for a developing o-line is... Run the damn ball. And from what I understand about him he's really good at run blocking. Now onto our special teams. What is there to say??? They're amazing. This year they may be better than ever. We will see. But with this schedule we will need to pull out a couple of games on specials. So, our season really depends on them to keep us afloat while everything else comes along.
I like Leon WAY more then Revis at PR....but the fact that our Special Teams is one of the best in this league cannot be denied. I'm hoping Westoff stays w/us for long, long time.
I agree. Our Special teams PUNT ass! Now, lets hope we only see them during kick offs and punt returns. Except for the occasional game winning field goal from Mike "Cat Scratch Fever" Nugent. <---That's really a term of endearment, I must have called him Ted Nugent 100 times last season.
