The Alternative: I'll pass on Pennington Jay Mohr Special to FOXSports.com, Updated 12 hours ago http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7...40813162&ATT=5 I had my Fantasy Draft this weekend and came to a disturbing discovery. Chad Pennington kind of stinks. I am, and always have been, a HUGE Jets fan. I grew up with the New York Sack Exchange: Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons, Abdul Salaam and Joe Klecko. I remember running back Bruce Harper crying after a Monday-night game because it was the first time in his career he had ever been on a team that reached .500. I remember Johnny "Lam" Jones. I remember Richard Todd guiding the Jets into a playoff slaughter. After Todd, the Jets passed on a guy you may have heard of named Dan Marino and instead picked Ken O'Brien in the '83 draft. Ken O'Brien was a good NFL quarterback, but he wasn't in Marino's league. These days, I am not sure if Chad Pennington is in Ken O'Brien's league! We have all heard by now how "smart" Chad Pennington is on the football field. We all have been told ? ad nauseum ? how well he manages a game. Do you want to know what you never hear about Chad Pennington doing each year? Throwing touchdowns and leading come-from-behind victories. Fantasy Football rewards quarterbacks for their statistical excellence. You do not get points for a win but you will rack up points for a quarterback airing it out in the fourth quarter while far behind (Matt Leinart, Jon Kitna). I was doing stand-up out of town and did not have my computer with me. Before I left for my trip, I set my Fantasy Football draft for "Auto Draft". I ranked my players as long as I could before my eyes melted into my Mac screen. My first six rounds went surprisingly well for a guy who wasn't there. Steven Jackson, Tom Brady, Thomas Jones, Pats D, Ben Watson, Santana Moss. That's what I auto-drafted before the wheels fell off. In the seventh round my computer took a kicker. In the eighth round I got Chad Pennington. I kept the kicker. That was a disturbing day for me as a Jets fan. I wound up releasing Chad Pennington to get more depth at wide receiver. The Jets are my favorite team and I gave their starting quarterback the boot! My reasons for releasing Chad Pennington were simple. Here is an NFL quarterback that isn't going to get me many yards or many touchdowns. Chad Pennington isn't going to get me many YARDS or many TOUCHDOWNS. YIKES! Time for Kellen Clemens! Time for Bubby Brister. Bring back Browning Nagle. The book on Chad Pennington is complete. Weak arm. Good short game. ZERO long game. Smart kid. Every year Chad Pennington will beat one team he shouldn't have and every year Chad Pennington will get demolished by a team he shouldn't have. At the end, you have a weak-armed, .500 quarterback with no long game. I'll pass. I have been a Pennington apologist for almost as long as I was a Herman Edwards apologist. No more. If a quarterback can't be counted on to deliver yardage and touchdowns, then what good is he? I don't care how smart a guy is on or off the football field. I don't care if Chad was a finalist to be a Rhodes Scholar. I would much rather have a guy as dumb as a bag of hair throwing for 3,500 yards and 22 TDs. Bring on the Kellen Clemens era. Best of lucky, Jay Mohr
he based his argument off fantasy football but alot of what he said is true. especially about TD's and coming from behind. thats what gets you wins.
that was kind of funny because he ends it saying i would much rather have a guy as dumb as a bag of hair throwing for 3,500 yards and 22TDs, so is he saying this is clemens? i know what he meant, but damn... end it diffrently.
Pennington's never had any bother getting wins. Look at Daunte Culpepper's brilliant fantasy seasons - win much? How about Jon Kitna? I'll hang my hat on Chad and look forward to 10 or 11 wins this year, thanks.
eh, this actually made me like the guy more. i always thought that he was a real dick, but it seems like he's been a Jets fan for a long time. And, lets be honest, how many of us fans drafted Chad on our Fantasy teams? i know, i know, real football is more important, and I do think Chad gives us a better chance to win now. that's what we want, that's what we need. hopefully Chad will shut up all the weak arm critics, and the best way to do that is with Wins.
Madden 08 doesn't have Chad as a smart quarterback weapon, Madden is the end all be all and thus Chad isn't smart. Ever since the loss to Oakland in the playoffs, I've always doubted Chad's ability.
yeah the Lions and the Cards. two of the worst managed organizations in football. a 2nd yr player and an obvious journeyman. yeah comparing chad to them MIGHT make him look better, might.
actually i think you guys took it out of context, he was speaking in terms of fantasy football those are two qb's on teams always playing from behind so they air it out late.
yes he did. in fact, he was able to eclipse 10 victories a year numerous times and reach a conference championship game, two things Pennington has been unable to do.
I agree with Coach K. I lot of what he said was true and I am kind of heading in the direction of Mohr. I was a Herm apoligist and I am a Chad aploigist but not for much longer. Hey, I hope I get blasted on Monday for bailing the "Chad", but my eyes see what my eyes see. He limits what we can do on offense and he can not beat a physical defense ( see week # 2)
The problem with Chad is that he needs a good running game to support him in order to bring out all the good in himself. Chad is like a lot of other QBs in the league that are designated as "serviceable" because they aren't star QBs but they are good enough to run a good offenses. It was proven that QBs like this CAN win a Super Bowl when the Ravens won with Trent Dilfer at the helm. What differentiates Chad from all of the serviceable QBs, and why a lot of fans don't like to think of him as such, is because he is so good at the intangible side of the game. Every head coach in the league wants a roster loaded with players with good intangibles, because those players typically do better than those who don't. Chad's intangibles are on an elite level, so in the minds of a lot of fans that puts him up on a plane with the better QBs in the league. Unfortunately for Chad, his physical limitations keep him out of the class of elite QBs. If Chad had the kind of arm that a lot of other QBs in the league have, there is no doubt in my mind that he would be a top tier QB, in the ranks of Peyton and Brady. But, he doesn't have that arm, and he is not that elite QB. He is good enough to where he will be in the game for a very long time... he could probably choose when to retire. Because Chad is such a good person, a lot of fans really truly want to see him succeed. But the more time he spends here without success, the less Jets fans will tolerate him. Especially when we have our next potential franchise QB waiting in the backseat, just itching to move up to the front. Chad basically has to work a miracle to maintain his stay with the Jets. Considering the shape the o-line is in this year, that is a reach. It is sad that he will likely get the fall for bad o-line play, but as other posters have pointed out, there is not much he will be able to do about it, while some other QBs in the league can. In the end, Chad will likely become another victim of the nature of the NFL. It would be a sad story, but as Jets fans we've dealt with this a long time. It's just the way the cookie crumbles.
