    Disagree.. CAPTAIN is the most overrated position ever, and yes, I played professional sports.

    Yes, I have. And having been part of a football team, I know that a 3rd year safety who is still finding his place in the defense probably isn't a great choice for an NFL team captain. But I wanted to keep it on DaBallhawk's level.

    BTW, team captains don't have shit to do with who calls the defense on the field.

    Try playing on a team without any clear-cut leadership... We tried that on the first semi-pro football team I played on... It was a mess... When that happens, the guys with the most charisma take over the reigns, as opposed to the guys who lead by example, and the team falls apart, at least as far as the locker-room situation goes

    No offense guys, but there is a reason why they are captains. The PLAYERS vote for them, not the coaches, fans, or anyone else. They think that they are the best players possible to lead this team, and I doubt they give a shit about skills, or who is better.

    Another excellent point for DaBallhawk to ignore.

    Maybe you should grab yourself a book called "Football for dummies" or something like that. :)

    If Football for Dummies tells you that team-elected captains call the defense, then it is as incorrect as you are.

    Captains are more like the motivational speakers of the team than anything. Teach the noobies and reassure them if they make mistakes.

    @abyzmul
    That's not what i said. Also, we all know that players vote for the most popular guys, especially on defense. So "team elected captain" has nothing to do with what you're able to do on the field. A defensive end doesn't do anything at all. He stands there, waits for the safety/middle linebacker to tell him what to do and then he lines up to do his job (yes, they are extremely important once the ball is snapped). Why would you want a player who takes "orders" from other guys to become your captain? A captain should be somebody all the other players look up to, somebody who talks to the coordinator and who knows what's going on, somebody who knows everyones responsibility, somebody who tells all the other guys what to do, a good player who can lead. And yes, usually it's a safety and the middle linebacker.

    Again, I don't agree, and I've been in enough locker rooms to know.

    Well that'll make a big difference too... Baseball's a great game, but it's not quite as dependent on chemistry and togetherness as football is....

    Um, actually it's what you implied by the sentence of mine that you quoted. Sorry for YOUR miscommunication.

    "Usually safety and middle linebacker"??? That's your argument for a team-voted position that has no impact on playcalling? Who the hell are you to tell the New York Jets who their team leadership should be?

    Your argument is almost as grasping as DaBallhawk's. This thread has been derailed by confusion, although it's a pointless thread to begin with. The inside/middle linebacker is the one who talks to the officials because he is the defense's field general, not because he's been voted team captain. LOL.

    Yet this is the same guy who defends Robertson to no end...

    What a crock.

    A captain is a captain. Sure football is a different game, but baseball is on the road, in buses, at least at the level I played, for 5 months.....
