bolly out-played him last summer and in the regular season before that. clemens has already out-played him this summer.
Assuming both Chad and Kellen get a decent amount of PT in week 3 of preseason, if Clemens again significantly outperforms Pennington has he done enough to win the job? Should practice hold more weight than live game (albeit preseason) action? If it isn't enough for him to win the job, there will most certainly be a lot of talk by the media of a QB controversy.
I see there's a lot of Pennington fans on this board. Guys, it isn't just one preseason game that's making us critical of Chad. It's the body of evidence over his career. He's played one, count them, one full season since 2000. No performance close to pro bowl caliber. Yes, the team's been pretty successful since he got here, but I honestly don't believe he was that instrumental to our success. He's surrounded by some pretty talented guys. He does not beat good teams. IMO he's average at best. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but please. I honestly think a lot of Jet fans settle for mediocrity. If that's what you're looking for, root for KC. I'm sure Herm will be dishing that out by the truckload. I want a SB. Chad will never get us there. Period. Just my two cents.
The Chad conundrum in a nutshell: Chad needs a strong running game, particularly strong inside, and a strong dominant defense in order to have any chance of beating an elite team. The Jets, given their current personnel, need to have a very strong QB in order to have any chance of beating an elite team. So do you change the QB or the rest of the team? I know which one I think is going to happen I'm just not sure if it will happen before we get pounded into the dirt and the choice is forced on us.
We should be talking about this next offseason. It's far to late to change the quarterback, thus completely change the whole offence.
To be fair, we did beat New England last season in New England. Granted, for the most part, you are correct. The problem with Chad is that he is such a great guy and such a leader that it's hard to bench him. We know his limitations and we know his strengths. Obviously, we can't bench him after just one preseason game, but if he doesn't improve on that (which he will, the question is by how much), then we'll have to try Clemens. But Chad deserves a chance to start with a full offseason of not rehabbing. Hopefully he can take advantage. There's still a very good chance Pennington misses time this year. Whether he gets another bad injury and he misses 2 months or gets knocked out for the season or if he just misses a game or two, Clemens will probably get a chance this year.
Yeah, but KC is not a Marshall educated Rhodes Scholar runner-up, which we all know translates directly to NFL QB ability.
i very much doubt it's too late, if anything, now is the time. give clemen's the start for the first half in the next two pre-games and see how he does. it does nothing to change the playbook! if anything, it will actually open up the whole playbook far more than noodle arm is capable of....
It would be hard for any QB alone to led a team to the superbowl. Tom Brady and Payton Manning are the only ones that can. But I think its safe to say that Chad Pennington can led a team to the playoffs... Just look at his track record.
I for one miss the days of being out of playoff contention before November.. Give me a Qb that can throw the ball 80 yards over a Qb that can win games any day of the week. I wonder what Browning Nagle is doing these days..
Im not sure any coach would scrape a season in favor iof starting an unproven quanity in Kellen Clemens! Sure Mike Shanahan did it ; but that was after Jake was reverting back to his underacheving ways. There is no way this happens. At least till week 6 or 7 if Chadwick look and play awful!
Jake took teams to the playoffs 4 times 98, 03, 04 and 05 and in 05 beat the Pats in the second round. Great example of when a QB who has done nothing but win shows signs that he can't get it done and you have drafted the guy who you think can do better you make the move.
can you pull one off that QB tree you must have in your backyard?? and while your at it might as well pull one for the 25 or so other teams that need that QB. Or better yet, maybe Mangini could talk Quincy Carter out of the crackhouse and onto the football field, we would be a lock for Arizona this year if he could make that happen..
That win in New England actually helps the point. We had a solid run game and the D stepped up. Chad was then able to provide his typical unspectacular but efficient performance and it was just enough to get the win. Even against Chicago, the D played great and the run game did well in the first half. As a result we were in it for most of the game. But as usual against a good D, Chad did nothing noteworthy and we ended up getting shut out. Chad most definitely deserves to be the starter, they have to consider other options if he plays the way he did last year against tougher competition.
You think the 2 are at par? Clemens has a lot of ground to make up before anyone will consider giving him Chad's spot. DOn't try to assume that you know why Clemens is here....is he takes CHad's spot then whatever, but you can't say you knew the plan all along, and keep in mind that he was drafted when Chad's future was a huge question mark. Using Chad's example and a reason for Kellen to take over in his 3rd year is weak....look at all the young rookie backups that this doesn't work for....they far outnumber the one who do.....maybe Kellen can do it, but it will take far more than one weak preseason game for him to be handed that spot....there's no reason that Chad should recess from last year's performance. Teh second pick was not an arm strength thing.......he was on the run and made an ill-advised throw...ya Chad was shit last shit but if you think it is a reflection of his ability to play QB you are mistaken.....Brady looked bad yesterday too....should the PAts call FLutie?
I see it like this...No matter how bad of a pre-season game Chad has next week, and how great Clemens could look...Chad will still be the starter. Now, it doesn't get easy for him, the first 2 weeks will be against 2 of the best defenses in the NFL, New England and Baltimore...If Chad sputters and the Jets start 0-2...I can easily see Mangini putting in Kellen right after.
