Does anyone know how does Chad look in training camp this summer. I was wondering if his arm looks any better or is it the same. I thought we might able to tell last Friday but he didn't throw one pass.
I see you don't post much, so I'll be nice Actually, there have been a ton of training camp reports posted in the last couple of weeks check them out. Most are done really well !!! In addition scroll through some of the beatwriter blogs. I haven't been to camp yet this year but from what I've read, so far he has looked pretty sharp, with just a few off days...
I took a look at a couple of reports from different posters here, to refresh my memory of what they said about CP. This is from 227's report: This is from one of Thunderbird's reports: I didnt see anything directly on CP in Kurt's tc posts, but from reading this, its fair to assume he believes CP is the obvious starter: This is from my 8/2 report, which wasnt posted here: This from my 8/7 report, which was posted here: The entire team, including Chad, looks to be very physically fit. He has none of the tentativeness he had last year when he was coming off the surgery. Most of the passes he throws in 11s are underneath passes, though he has cranked a long pass every so often. I am seeing a lot of dumpoffs to RBs, and sideline fades when he goes long. The short and middle stuff looks real good. The longer patterns are hit and miss. Much of the offense is built around getting YAC. The most ironic thing in tc this season is that it has been Clemens' throws that have fluttered and floated at times, moreso than Pennington's. CP has thrown a better spiral than Clemens, though Tui has the most velocity of all of them. Smith has not been accurate, and has problems finding his receivers downfield. CP has looked in synch with Coles, Cotchery and McC, especially with Cotch, who has had an excellent camp. He needs to stay healthy, and as long as he drastically cuts down on his ints this season, I think we will be pleasantly surprised at the improvement on offense with a healthy Jones and a more experienced Washington. A more effective running game is going to open up the passing game, and make his play action that much more effective. So, Chad looks smooth, his footwork and ball handling are clean, his confidence is high, he is throwing the ball as well as he can, and is having a very good camp thusfar, imo.
Damn, Jetcane...I just hope Jets18 comes back to this page sometime soon to see all the work you did just for an update on Chad before the game starts. Well done regardless...
Cane is da man! Pennigton still can't hit a WR on a deep fly pattern in stride. He just doesn't have the arm for it, but the WR's do a great job of adjusting to his underthrown passes. His medium and short range suff looks fine.
I was at the two early camps and Pennington was throwing a lot. As T-Bird said above, nothing deep with velocity. But I have to say that I was extremely comforted with his short to mid-range stuff. After all, this is Penny's forte'. I will tell you he has MUCH more zip on these passes than he did last year at this time. And I mean MUCH MORE. "Night and day" comes to mind. Anyone looking up my previous posts from that period a year ago will quickly see how upset I was with the Pop Warner passes at that time. They were more than alarming and clearly he was still rehabbing and lacking strength. Not so today. He truly has healed and, what's so much more important, he doesn't even seem to think about it anymore, as he's already stated. He seems to have even more velocity on passes "fired down," his patented, quickly released short ball that goes low to the dump-off and can be caught by no one else should it fail. I am not noticing a throwing off of the "wrong foot" either, as has been previously reported by some. He's not mobile and he does wait extraordinarily long sometimes to release while checking down, but I don't see the incorrect throwing "off the wrong foot" that I've read about sometimes. Let's face it, Chad is not the most athletic QB in the NFL, but neither does he possess a "girl-like" throwing motion. Would I like to see what he could do if he "winds up" sideways one time? Oh yeah, but he's still getting the job done by throwing in the pocket while squarely facing the D-line. This, to me, has always been his major problem. Not throwing off the wrong foot or "happy feet," but simple getting himself sideways and letting it go with a twisting motion that involves his entire body in the windup (like a baseball pitcher). Let's not forget something that is extremely important. Chad makes up for an awful lot of shortcomings with his intellect and ability to read. Throw in a ton of experience now and a pocket "feel" for when to throw it just short of being crushed. He's now extremely comfortable and in charge without question, which I think goes a lot further than most give credit for in terms of confidence and enhanced leadership abilities. He knows his plays, he knows his receivers and he knows he now has blocking. In other words, don't worry about Chad this year (unless he goes down). In my opinion, and much to the chagrin of the doomsdayers and "noodlearmists" that frequent this site, coupled with the Pennington haters who perpetually proclaim otherwise, Chad is perfectly capable of leading us to the promised land THIS YEAR given relatively few injuries to our key players and given a few lucky bounces along the way.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but do other teams film training camps of their opponents? Is this banned or just unethical?
Yeah...I'm catching the same SHTUFF here in Atlanta....Chad's hurt..BLAH BLAH BLAH....NO PASSES.......yet no body can give me a source
It is against NFL rules. If a team got caught doing that, the penalties are pretty severe. The Jets know that the running offense was bad last year, and that first game was to try some new things in an early attempt to improve it. Any out of town reporterthat even hinted it was due to some sort of injury to Pennington is clueless and incompetent.
Well, I'm not so sure I've got tons of confidence in any one deep pass, regardless of timing or pattern. Don't get me wrong, the 4-6 deep passes I saw Penny throw this year had more velocity on them (noticably so) than any intermediate pass I saw from him last year at this time. And it's interesting, because it's something you do not expect at all... and all of a sudden, WOW, here it comes, it's actually a deep pass (deep for Penny)! And some of them will have just enough on them to throw some DB's off, who think they're in for a game in which they won't be challenged, ala Peyton Manning-style. But we've got to face facts with Chad and that is, he simply does not possess the arm-strength for the classic deep ball. I'm not sure he ever did, watching him all these years. Can anyone really say they ever saw him throw a laser deep ball with accuracy even before his injury? No, I don't think so. So we have to live with this now. And while he'll be able to surprise some secondaries with an occasional ball that he'll release deep, when you see them, they still have considerable air under them, enough to make you follow the arc and fight down your heart climbing into your throat. The thing is, DB's are out there licking their chops for these kind of passes, not to say we won't be able to use a pattern in which we HOPE the guy will be wide open, because that's kind of what you need in order for it to have success and not get picked. But again, Chad's got a lot of weapons, more protection, a stronger arm this year (he really does) and his chemistry with the WR's is HUGE. He, Cotch, Coles, McCareins, Smith, all of them are on the same page as far as confidence and timing and "feel" for where the ball will be. And with our running game and some good blocking and Chad's ability to check it down and dump off to say, Washington or Baker), I'm confident Chad can move the chains. I'm anxious to watch Chad in the game for awhile tonight and I hope he gets a decent number of snaps, because you'll see what I mean if he passes the ball a few times. He's got more on his intermediate passes this year, so couple that with all the other factors and I think our O will be okay.
