ESPN?s Matt Mosley on Kenyon Coleman
A few weeks back, Matt Mosley from ESPN Hashmarks had made a remark about Kenyon Coleman and his abilities, I asked him to elaborate, and here was his quick reply:

If you want Kenyon to be your starter, you?re in trouble ? Great guy, decent run stuffer ? but not an NFL starter by any stretch of the imagination!

Hmm ? well, if he?s a good run stuffer, then that?s half the battle. I am willing to see what he does, first. Some thought Bryan Thomas was over his head (I was bullish) last year, and that turned out pretty well.

Thanks very much to Matt for the answer, I just hope that the Jets? staff is better at talent evaluation than he is ? sorry Matt, nothing personal, but I have more of a stake in them being right than you!

I think based on the fact that he was never a starter, 20M for five years with 6M guaranteed was too much money. Apparently, the only way they could have gotten him was if they pay that much for him. So he is better live up to expectations.

Well that will surely be a waste of a large signing bonus if you hit the nail on the old head on him

I think we overpaid for the guy, but if he's an upgrade to Kimo (which would be hard to imagine that he wouldn't be) then we improved by signing him.

Worringly Kimo is still on the team and still the man to beat. Out of the crop of DEs that we have I thought that Coleman was the one who would start at RDE

Matt mosley used to be a Dallas beat writer, too, right? Which would mean he knew a little more about Coleman than most. I am intrigued by him - he's clearly the biggest unknown commodity we added (Thomas Jones is a known commodity in my book) so I'd really like to see what he can do.

It wasn't like Coleman was getting taken out of the games for some crap player he was backup to some great 3-4 DE's.

I think this Coleman deal could end up being a great illustration on why it can be a downfall to have an accountant as your GM... when his main scout is Bradway. Bradway is in love with developmental players that show a spark of potential yet haven't done a damn thing in a starter role and may not ever, depending on how they are utilized. Coleman could end up being a solid player for us but I'd rather Terry Bradway was a million miles away when it happened. We need a different head scout.

He will be. I think Mangini is just leaving Kimo as the "starter" for now in order to give all the other guys something to aim for. Open competition is good sometimes, but this kind of competition can be even better. There are several DE's, Coleman included, trying to take over Kimo's spot.

Coleman will be our starter this season - maybe not the first few weeks, but eventually

what about eric hicks or michael haynes?? We paid Coleman starters money but I wouldn't doubt it if haynes or hicks started instead. Whatever way we go, all three of these players are better than Kimo so Im not worried.

I doubt our FO would run out and sign a guy because Parcells deigned to give them a phone call. Bradway is our head scout and I think that has a lot to do with every single player we acquire, for good or bad.

BTW, Parcells also called the FO and congratulated them for drafting Andre Maddox.

It was too much money but after Corey Redding was franchised the Jet's options were very limited.

I will admit I was shocked to see the Jets not try to get a defensive lineman on the first day of the draft.
