Is it a new rule that relievers get charged as earned runs that they give up that wouldn't have happened if an error hadn't occurred before they came in? I don't remember that distinction of team earned runs and individual earned runs when I was a kid, but maybe I just missed it. Very easy inning for Glavine - he should come out for the 8th.
Sure, you post this after the commercial break and they show the slow motion replay. Even so I think it was a bang bang play and if Glavine's slide hadn't been so terrible there's no way he could've tagged him.
Terry Metcalf was 16 when Eric was born (15 when he did the deed). Schoeneweis and Mota. They still on the team?
This makes absolutely no sense. If you are going to let Glavine start the 9th, taking him out after 1 pitch (a single) with an 8 run lead is ridiculous.
Put #296 in the books. Another masterful win that hopefully this time won't be followed by a string of putrid losses.
I'll start watching again with the Sunday game. I boycotted the Mets once before- 2004 after the Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano trades. I watched about 7 or 8 Mets innings total after that trade that year (after having watched religiously up to that point). I don't get why other teams are doing stuff about problem players (Bradley designated for assignment, Wells moved to bullpen, Barrett traded, etc), yet the Mets continue to let Schoeneweis figuratively undress himself and let the opposition pound him in the ass game after game after game after game. I was perhaps the most patient Mets guy here last year. I have lost some of that with this 2007 outfit.
Willie probably told Glavine he was thru after eight and Glavine probably told Willie he wanted in. Showing Glavine veteran respect, Willie probably said go back in until you give up one hit. What is so difficult to understand about that? Why do you over-analyze? It does make perfect sense and is not ridiculous.
It just doesn't make perfect sense. In a 9-1 game there is no reason to make a pitching change in the 9th. Either take him out to start the 9th or keep him in until he got into real trouble. I think it had more to do with getting him the standing ovation as he walked off the mound; which I could do without.. Anyway good win last night, it was nice to see Glavine not completely suck and the bats come alive.. Now if they can just start playing with the same intensity in the 2nd & 3rd games of the series as they have been in the 1st game; they might just be alright afterall..
