Fathers day is coming up soon and my dad's favorite player ever is George Sauer Jr, one of the more underrated Jets of all time since he retired after 6 years at age 27, but he was a 4 time all pro and had close to 130 receiving yards in Super Bowl III. Anyway, my brothers and I have always wanted to get my dad a George Sauer jersey, but have hesitated to buy him a regular modern day customized Jets jersey in hopes that we might find a legit, 1960s style jersey with the lighter colors and stuff (either one that is already a Sauer jersey or one that is personalizable). The 3 of us are willing to spend a decent amount if it gets our dad that jersey that he has always wanted. Anyone have any idea where I could find one? The internet hasnt been much help so far, but maybe one of you guys has seen one or knows someone who can get one.
check into Mitchell & Ness, I have no idea if that will help but they are probably your best bet.. http://home.mitchellandness.com/mn/home.html
so far none of the obvious websites have anything on sauer or customizing throwbacks...My brother contacted a memorabilia store though and the guy thinks he might know where to get one...If it works Ill let you guys know where we end up getting it from...Thanks for the suggestions and keep em coming
call mitchell and ness actually -- they can get most items even if it isn't on their website -- also try Steiner Sports
Mitchell & Ness are rip-off artists...they'll charge you $400 for that jersey and doesn't really look like the 60's version anyway. If you can't find another supplier, I say just go for today's authentic with the name and #83, and wear it with pride.
Wow. I tried to find something for ya. All I could find was one jersey signed by the whole super bowl team and it's almost $2,000! I guess when he walked away from football, he really left. I did find a signed Maynard though. And you can find Namath's anywhere. (I have one :grin http://www.authenticsportscollectibles.com/store/donmaynardhandsignedjetsthrowba-p-2150.html ^ That jersey isn't the "old school" light green colors thou.
Try contacting Mr George Sauer Jr. directly (if he's still ticking). Maybe he'd come out and give a jersey right to your dad. How would that rock? From what we read the old time players are about living on the streets, so $500 for a quick jersey drop may happen. Or offer him $25 and a P&J sandwitch.
This thread got me thinking where is he now? I found this little tidbit but it's from 2004. Wide receiver George Sauer Jr. of Waco, the son of Jets player personnel director George Sauer Sr., was selected by the Jets in the AFL's redshirt draft in the fall of 1964. ... "I think the NFL people were certain that I would sign with the Jets (because of his father), so they wouldn't spend a draft choice on me," Sauer said. "In retrospect, though, that was a good thing, because I wound up on a team with a lot of talent. If you were a receiver, where would you want to go other than a team with Joe Namath?" Before they became teammates in New York, Sauer, Lammons, Hudson and Elliott helped the Longhorns beat Namath's Alabama team 21-17 in the Orange Bowl. ... Sauer, meanwhile, prepared for the game by drawing on the lessons he learned as the son of a coach -- George Sr. coached at New Hampshire, Kansas, Navy and Baylor before joining the Jets' front office. "My father was the coach of the Naval Academy in 1948-49," Sauer said. ... Namath completed 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards, 133 of them to Sauer on eight receptions. ... After catching passes for nearly 5,000 yards in six seasons with the Jets, Sauer retired abruptly in 1970, bringing an early end to a career his teammates believe eventually would have led to the Hall of Fame. "I always wanted to do something else," Sauer said. "I had reached the same point my father had, which was to be on an NFL championship team. (George Sr. played for the 1936 Packers.) I'm not astute enough psychologically to know for sure, but maybe it was about sons wanting to be as good or better than their fathers." Even though he played only six years in the pros, Sauer had been involved with the game since he was a toddler and was the Baylor Bears' mascot during his father's years as head coach. He was a bench player until his junior year in high school and "fairly invisible as a college player" at Texas before he recorded three thousand-yard seasons with the Jets. Sauer spent the years after he left the Jets working out his issues about football. He wrote the foreword to Gary Shaw's landmark college football expos? Meat on the Hoof, then, inexplicably, unretired to join the Charlotte Hornets of the World Football League in 1974. After coaching in another short-lived pro league in Charlotte, Sauer moved to South Dakota in the 1980s to work on a still-unfinished novel. He moved a little over a year ago to Waco, where he is caring for his elderly mother.
Thanks for the where are they now update...interesting stuff...I wish I could contact him directly, not sure how though...And Mitchell and Ness say they dont make it and wont sell us a blank shell that we could take to a store to have it customized...Probably going to settle for the modern day one, i guess...
George Sauer George Sauer Jr is my uncle...looks like I am posting this a few years late. I do have signed Jersey's and one of them is a real jersey he played in. Have just about everything else he had saved throughout the years. Some really incredible items from his father (my grandfather) George Sr as well. Someday I think the Green Bay Packers would appreciate some of it. Most of these items I never see myself selling but unfortunatley (for now) it is just sitting around. George Jr is still alive and living in my hometown.
I've been looking for the same thing for years almost- The odd thing is they won't let you customize a Jersey with any past players, this name makes it past the initial screening but I doubt it would be made. Maybe if enough of us email the Jets Shop they'll get it done, and the original Jersey would be great.
You ever try phoning up Gerry Cosby in the city? They will pretty much do any numbering and lettering for you. I had them made a Clowney nameplate for me last year, and sewed it on my Coles jersey just so I didn't have to buy a new jersey. They charged me $30 for the name plate, and I got to keep wearing my jersey. Technically, the NFL won't let stores make just nameplates, since they want to get a cut of all jerseys sold, and if people just bought new nameplates, they would never sell new jerseys. So long story short, call Cosby's...I'm fairly certain they will put any name and number on any jersey that you want.
