May 22, 2007 Home > The Way We Hear It > Whispers ~ ~ ~ Due to a lack of speed at the WR spot, we?re told the Jets would consider keeping WR Justin McCareins to fill a deep-threat role, provided he restructures his existing contract, which calls for him to be paid $2.9 million in base salary in 2007. If McCareins refuses to restructure, he likely will be a salary-cap casualty. > http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/The+Way+We+Hear+It/Whispers/2007/whispers2203.htm
I saw Cimini on SportsNet NY this week, and he says the Jets would like to get rid of McCareins and expects him to be cut in June. Cimini says his sources indicate that the team does not like McCareins' attitude and his comments... ...plus he cannot add anything on special teams...
thats funny coz there was a report last season about mccareins doing good things on ST's.... i say keep him if he re does his contract.
I'd like to see him go. I think it's pretty much inevitable that he'll be gone after this season anyway, so we might as well get Smith and Stuckey involved more now so they can make bigger contributions sooner then later.
That's a rational way to look at it. Let's take a look at Smith now and see if he's 3rd receiver material. If he is then maybe Coles can slot inside in the 3 receiver sets. That'd be a really nasty thing to be able to do to other teams, forcing their best cover guy inside.
McCarens is not a deep threat role, first and foremost. He perked up last year to his credit, but we have guys on the team who can run faster.
If he reworks his contract, keep him around for depth....but if he doesn't give him the boot.....he isnt good....
There is no depth at WR. What if Coles gets hurt? Or Cotchery? I'm not a big McCareins fan, but I think he should stay.
totally agree...we have no depth, so we need as many bodies as possible...i dont care if hes getting overpaid, hes the best receiver after cotchery or coles on our team in my opinion
It would be intriguing to see how the depth chart develops during TC. If JMac emerges as the third best WR in the group then we should keep him. But if he doesn't, we might as well give the PT to the younger players and try to develop them faster.
Titans From NFL.com today: Tennessee also could reopen trade talks it had this spring with the New York regarding former Titans wide receiver Justin McCareins, whom the Jets have been open to trading. McCareins spent his first three NFL seasons in Tennessee, before New York traded for him in 2004. In his three seasons in New York, McCareins has had declining reception totals.
I would trade him for a 5th or 6th at this point. Not going to get much more than that. Also, the Titans have plenty of cap space to do the deal.
My guess is the Titans will get a look at their options in the mini-camps and by training camp they'll either have no interest in McCareins or be willing to go as high as a 4th.
McCareins was absolutely a deep threat in Tennessee. What everybody here loves to forget is that we don't have a QB that can trow the damn ball deep so why even have anybody that can get down field.
Well, this also is a good point. I will say Chad can throw the ball pretty deep, but his accuracy suffers and they have too much arc to the throws, so they float. Oh well, I guess your point is quite valid.
