It's illegal because hemp fiber was the leading competition for the newly-invented polyester fiber (patented by DuPont) and there was a yellow journalism crusade that involved businessmen lining the pockets of reporters and politicians to cripple the hemp market by making it illegal to grow within our national borders. It remains illegal because Reagan needed to show results for his War On Drugs so it was further demonized as 'a gateway drug' in the 80s. It's no coincidence that fines for possession of marijuana can mostly be fines smaller than a lot of traffic tickets. The government can make a lot of money by legalizing it, restricting growing to licensed facilities and regulating sales of it like alcohol, but the certain government agencies that benefit from tax funding for the number of doja arrests every year don't want to lose that money. I guess those funds outweigh the amount of DUI tickets they'll make off it.

But the fact is they could never restrict growing it. Marijunana can grow virtually anywhere. With a few light bulbs you can grow pounds of the stuff. The government would never ever make money by legalizing pot.

Wow. I can't see the NFL giving this idiot any more chances.

Makes me sick that this lunatic is packed with so much talent. I mean, even out of shape, too light, he was running more effective than Ronnie Brown that season he came back, and I rate Brown very highly, surprisingly.

I am going to miss Ricky, he helped us and the rest of the AFC east out alot by screwing w/ Miami. he had ONE great season in his career and that talent caused Miami to thro away 2 1st rd picks for him then wait for him to come back after he quit and after being suspended but now they won't wait for him and they can move on so this is best for them.

has any player in sports history ever had more draft picks wasted on them? No traded their '99 draft to move up to get him then Miami gave up 2 1st rounders and the guys has had ONE big time year while the rest of his career was average.

I disagree completely...I make my own beer, grow my own tomatoes and basil, and probably spend just as much as anyone else that doesn't on those goods. A lot of people don't have the DIY motivation...if you don't think legal pot sales would be a huge tax boon like alcohol or gas, you've been misinformed. And byz is right, Reefer Madness was the crowning achievement of the yellow campaign...Dupont wanted to corner the market with their synthetic fibers, Carnegie wanted steel, not hemp fiber to be the king...the gas companies wanted crude oil to be king, not hemp oil...bayer wanted aspirin to be the top pain reliever...and the list goes on...the greedy movers and shakers of our society at the time chose those environmentally destructive methods over good old common sense. A renewable resource like hemp couldn't be monopolized and power maintained like their products could. And that is why we are where we are today.

I used to think this was really funny…now I realize that it is really sad. What a waste of ability and privilege. What a waste of a person.

I think it's possible that many people will experiment with growing, but if you think every Tom Dick and Harry is going to run down to Home Depot and buy themselves a greenhouse, you vastly underrate the innate laziness of humanity. Potheads are resourceful out of necessity. If you think someone will go out and buy soil and read agricultural books and research the seed banks instead of just going out and buying a pack of pot cigarrettes, then I think you don't know very many potheads. There's a reason that weak and watery beer is the best-selling in America. Marketing.

I agree with most of you guys.....Pretty crazy how a substance that is illegal for pure bullshit reasons from back in the day can deny a good football player his job who obviously has personal problems, but such is life......It's 2007, think of all the technology that has gone down in the past 10 years alone.......all the strides we have made, yet friggin pot is still illegal.......really amazing if you educate yourself on the history of all this, The United States needs to wake the hell up with matters like this
