Yanks' Torre, Proctor suspended 05/07/2007 14:43 PM - Yankees reliever Scott Proctor was suspended four games and manager Joe Torre was penalized one game by Major League Baseball on Monday, a day after a skirmish between the Seattle Mariners and New York. NEW YORK -- Yankees reliever Scott Proctor was suspended four games and manager Joe Torre was penalized one game by Major League Baseball on Monday, a day after a skirmish between the Seattle Mariners and New York. Proctor appealed his suspension, meaning he can pitch until a hearing is held and a ruling is issued. Torre will miss Monday night's game against the Mariners. Bench coach Don Mattingly will manage in Torre's absence. The problems started after Josh Phelps slid hard into Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima. When Phelps came up again, Jarrod Washburn hit him in the back with the first pitch. At that point, the umpires warned both dugouts for the second time in three days. Proctor then threw an inside pitch to Yuniesky Betancourt in the seventh. Betancourt pointed his bat toward the mound, catcher Wil Nieves grabbed him, and the benches and bullpens emptied. No punches were thrown. Proctor and Torre were ejected.
hmm..4 games for a reliever is a lot more then 4 games for a starter. He's the first Yankee since Torre has been here, I think, to at least do something about it. I'm sure Steinbrenner will pay his time lost.
This is fine. I admire the move by Proctor and Torre. The suspension just gets Proctor some well-deserved rest.
Unlike like a starter Proctor will actually miss 4 games considering he pitches in every game. But is was nice to see a Yankee pitcher finally stick up for the hitters, was about time.
