A little interesting tidbit. They showed a clip on Sportscenter last night with Clemens. He claimed he would not have returned to the Yankees had Joe Torre been fired last week. I wonder how much that played into Joe keeping his job?
Why would Clemens turn down a pro-rated 28 million if, say, Don Mattingly was the new manager? Something is not computing here.
Because he could get it elsewhere? (Granted, probably not that much, but let's be honest, after $20M, would it have been a big deal for him to take less if he wanted to go elsewhere?) Plus his buddy Andy is here too. I'm sure that played into it too. I'm not blind enough to believe that money played no part, however, I think the money had more of an effect of speeding the decision, rather than deciding the destination.
The good thing about this is Clemens can tutor the Yankee farmhands when he is getting ready..... Oh wait, he is training with the Astros...LMAO
*Update* Phil Hughes is negotiating a deal so he can go to college full time and still pitch for the Yanks on every 5th day. He will try to attend Fordham to make it less of a burden on the franchise.
Arod wants a new $30 million dollar contract next year. He also wants off from Saturday 5pm until Sunday 12pm, both home and on the road. If he is already in a game on Saturdays, he gets paid time and a half per diem per each extra half inning after 5pm. The formula is annualized salary/ 162 games times 18 half innings/ times 1.5.
Igawas agent wants the pitcher to be able to hand pick his minor league assignment as per the new Yankee policy.
So is Beckett scaring anyone yet? He's leading the majors in wins, and he looks unbeatable right now. The Sox pitching is top-notch. BTW: For anyone who doesn't fear Boston's lineup, here's some interesting news from last night's game: Notice there is no mention of Manny or Papi in there. The Sox can hit, and their pitching is elite. Anyone who is discounting them as the current team to beat needs to start worrying.
If they still have a lead in August I'll start to worry. Hell, if Beckett is still pitching in August I may worry too. It would be a first for him to get through a season without a stint or two on the DL. Although he did better last year.
Roger Clemens almost started crying Sunday when he mentioned that Mr. Steinbrenner whispered something into his ear that he will never forget.................sure $28,000,000. New York Post, May 8th, George King column: "Phil Garner, Clemens' manager in Houston, said it wasn't a problem until you saw him playing golf."
