I was just about to post this, good catch. Very interesting though. I keep forgetting that they played together at Marshall... That would have been an interesting reunion.
It does not surprise me. Chad probably had his most sucessful years at QB throwing the ball to Moss. It definitely helped him get drafted.
I would have been more shocked if I didn't see a report like this. Pennington had a lot of success with Moss at Marshall and I bet it'd be his dream to reunite with him in NY. (Un?)fortunately, we made the decision to stick with what we have and avoid Moss' chronic character issues, which I am fine with.
Moss would have rekindled the magic in Penny's arm that was bright and shining during his Marshall days. I always wanted our FO to actively pursue Moss, and now he's a Pat. Arghh!
How could you forget that? They set NCAA records. 29 TDs as a Freshman (Pennington to Moss). 25 as a junior.......Division 1-A championship after moving from division 1-AA the year before. They were roommates too.
The reason Pennington doesn't throw deep isn't because of his recievers, it's because he can't. After the two surgeries, Chad can't make the deep throws. After the catch guys, like Coles and Cotchery, even Brad Smith and our RBs, are perfect for him. Moss would freak out after two weeks of underthrown balls.
Throwing deep doesn't mean you have to throw 50 yards. It means that you can hit a receiver who has opened a hole between him and the defender. It may only be 30 yards. That's what Moss does. He gets by the coverage so fast that all you have to do is step back and throw. Wherever it goes he will catch up to it.
Look, I can throw a decently deep ball. It floats in the air for 30 minutes, my grandmother can pick it out by just tracking the arch, and I'm lucky if it can go in the general 90 degrees of direction I aim it in. By the way, my grandmother passed away in 2002. It's that easy to pick it off. That said, I don't think I qualify as a quarterback. In this same way, Chad Pennington throws what I like to call a granny ball. It is a ball that, when stretched down the field, anyone can pick off. He specifically does not throw this pass, because anyone can pick it off. Now, let's theoretically say Chad Pennington had a really tall, obscenely fast receiver who can historically blow by normal coverage. Also, let's say he has a great rapport with this guy, and has been battle tested with him. They're friends who go way back, and developed a lot of the potential that makes them what they are today in the NFL. This guy is so great, Chad can lean back, and throw up his granny ball a few times this season, and even better, it'll come down in his teammate's hands. I'm not saying nothing or nothing...but if we had managed to get a guy like this for Chad Pennington, then a guy like Thomas Jones would have a better season, because the field would be quite stretched... Coles is already getting a lot of coverage. If we'd gotten Randy Moss, do you really think they could ignore both men? And if they didn't, could they have ignored Cotchery? Alright, so let's say they'd put double coverage on Moss and Coles, and put a guy on Cotchery. Now we have seven men in the box. Where does TJ run? Wherever the hell he wants. Just saying Jets...Randy Moss would have been pretty sweet.
Absolutely right. And it isn't so much the Granny ball. he can throw deep. He just can't throw deep with accuracy. When he tries it becomes those floaters. With Moss all he would have had to do is step back and throw it as far as he could. Moss would have caught up to it. He has never been overthrown since coming into the league.
Personally, I hate him, but Moss would've been a great addition, especially at the cost. Imagine Moss, Coles and Cotchery on the field at the same time?!?!?! geez....... and if he acts like a spoiled prick again, cut his ass. A 4th rd pick isn't much of a loss.
