I think you hit the nail on the head. There is absolutely no reason to get rid of a starter on our o-line at this point. Unless of course Kendall told the team he wants to go play with the Pats ...
And it's always better to let go of a guy a year early than a year late. I'm not convinced the Jets are early on Kendall though. He played ok last year but nothing special and that was the second year in a row that was true. He's 33 and there's nothing about him that suggests he's going to be very good until 36 like some lineman are.
I hear what you are saying and agree in most cases but there is no debating that he is the best option and perhaps only option for this coming season. Money is not the issue, if there is any truth to this speculation there is something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about. It could be the same as Mawae last year, Kendall has never been known as tight lipped, although that on the surface didn't appear to be a problem, maybe it is behind closed doors?
I see where you're coming from. They may have shopped Kendall cause he's getting old and probably wants more money. But they didnt get anything for him so we should probably keep him one more year before getting a replacement settled. As for Barrett and Barton I think its inevitable that they're cut by June 1st. I dont know if I'd keep them all... maybe Barton if we had to but Barrett isn't playing like he used to or ever could.
Really I think they may just be recognizing that Kendall is just a guy at this point. The Jet's run game has sucked for two years now (obviously 2005 there were some circumstances involved, but in 2006 not) and when that happens the first place you look at is the guards. If the QB is going down too often you look at the tackles, but when a team can't rush you look at the guards.
Unless some UDFAs really knock our socks off, why would we cut anyone at this point? We have plenty of cap room so money isn't an issue.
We need some beef on the oline and Kendall is too small. He gets abused when we try to run the ball. He is old as well.
Leonard Peters is sick...I remember reading stuff on him during the college season and being impressed. He isn't the most convential player and doesn't always have proper tackling form but he plays with crazy intensity.... I can't post his youtube highlight reel but I recommend watching it just youtube Leonard Peters
If we cut Barton, David Harris becomes a day one starter for sure in my opinion. I would be ok with that as I think Barton was out of place playing ILB...Harris will fit like a glove.
That would be a stupid move. Why cut the leader of the o-line? Not only that, but he is still a good player. I'm boggled by this.
Kendall can't leave, without him we really have no left OL... can't trade that away. Barton will prob go, especially because we drafted Harris(possible replacement), Barrett needs to stay to help keep a constant veteran presence in the DB As for McCarreins, he is still here??
i wouldnt be shocked if we signed or traded for younger guard like smiley of t 49ers o suttin, but i hope he does stay, he helped nick and d'brick so much...hopefully hes not cut
kendall better not get axed.....our OL is thin enough, and hes a solid performer. hes a little older than i would like, but the guy is a very good guard. and it was also already stated, but bears repeating, that he and mangold were tight, and hes mentored our young stud center. hopefully barton takes a pay cut, b/c id like to see him stay with the team. he plays with a fire and hes a great competitor.
We can't afford to let anyone develop unless you are saying just throw the season away. We need to play the best players we have.
I view this team as in transition. I enjoy the games and will enjoy seeing the team hopefully grow, but at this point we need to play and develop players like Smith, Jones, Harris, Revis, over veterans who may well be better today and give us a better chance to win today if it means winning a SB in the next 2 to 4 years. That includes Clemens getting quality minutes with the first unit this year. Last year was very nice and it played out almost exactly as I predicted but I have no illusions that we are a team competing for a SB this year.
I think Wade Smith is the only other player with C experience. I don't get this either. Arizona showed him the door because of his mouth, maybe EM has heard enough.
The other guys can go EAD, but letting kendall go is just stupid...He's an experienced veteran with center ability and he's getting paid squat to play a position we are already thin at...if we can upgrade, great, but at 1.7mil, he's still worth keeping around even as a backup C/G and mentor. This reeks of the mawae move from last year...maybe he is acting a fool, but that doesn't seem like him. What else could it be?
It could be that the Jets feel his continued presence on the team would retard D'Brick maturing into an excellent left tackle. If that were the case the underlying reason would probably be that the Jets can't run to the left with the two of them there so they need to find a better run-blocking guard on that side.
Maybe Adrian Jones can man the man the LOG position. Adrian Jones has always seemed to be more comfortable on the left side. Prior to Brick, Jones played much better at LT than he did at RT. Then last year he played well early in the season when Mangini experimented with him at left guard subbing for an injured Kendall. I forgot what game that was when Kendall got hurt and Chad was getting killed; he came in for Katnick and stopped the bleeding. I think it was the Jacksonville game. If Jones could become our starting LOG that would make for a young and very atheletic left side and middle.
