I thought smoking crack went out of style years ago...... Calvin (or whoever else is rumored to be the #2 pick) isn't worth demolishing the present and the future of the Jets.
Here's the one argument for this rumor having some truth to it: the Lions are desperate to trade down. Truly desperate. The last thing Matt Millen wants to do tomorrow is send a little card up to Goodell with Calvin Johnson's name on it. He'd walk through fire right now to make a deal that was acceptable to avoid that fate. The other little thing of course is that nobody is bum-rushing him trying to get that pick. If the Jets could put together an acceptable package and decided to pull the trigger they could definitely have the 2 pick. Millen is on record as saying he won't trade with anybody unless they have a good first round pick to send back. However Vilma is definitely close enough to fill that condition. Throw in the 25 and something else and he might well jump. Besides Millen is always doing the wrong thing and taking Calvin Johnson would be the right thing. That's why he's ready to do just about anything to avoid it.
Last year we didn't trade up from #4 to #2 and had more picks to play with last year. No way to we trade up from #25 to #2 with four less picks. Unless, of course, we trade up, and then trade back down with Tampa or some other team really looking for CJ.
That's not going to work. If Tampa Bay was willing to pay for the 2 they'd already have a deal with the Lions. The reason detroit would be casting around right now looking for a trading partner is that none of the usual suspects are willing to play along. TB is being cheap, Washington doesn't have the ammo, Atlanta is playing coy. That's why they'd be doing it. BTW, let me make it clear that I don't think the rumor has any substance but I can see the conditions that might spawn the trade.
Lions | Team could trade No. 2 pick Fri, 27 Apr 2007 13:22:40 -0700 Sal Palantonio, of ESPN, reports the Detroit Lions are talking to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers about a trade for the second overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. There are several trade scenarios being discussed between the teams. One scenario is the Buccaneers would trade the fourth overall pick and their two second-round picks to the Lions for the second pick. This scenario is unlikely, since the Buccaneers have yet to be willing to trade what is being asked for by the Lions. Another scenario involves the Lions taking Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson, while the Buccaneers would take University of Clemson DE Gaines Adams. After the selections, the Buccaneers would trade Adams, another player, possibly CB Brian Kelly, and maybe an additional pick for Johnson.
yea well...the thing is there are plenty of teams bum-rushing them bucs/falcons/broncos.... broncos had a deal that the lions rejected a day later falcons owner has ordered a trade up we dont have the ammo and the bucs or falcons will move up
Maybe except for the fact that CJ is by far the best prospect in the draft similar to Bush last year, passing on that would be much more damaging than being "forced" to keep him, which is a very good reason why that pick has such a high value
i think the lions have worst possible scenario deals lined up w/ the falcons/bucs but trying to up the anti are throwing more rumors out...they had a deal with the broncos, but the lions price went up....the lions have the cards and no one is giving them the chance that they might be playing it right .....but we wont be involved they are just trying to pry every last pick or player out of a potential deal
If it goes through you have to feel for Vilma having to play for Millen and the hapless Lions franchise.
I highly doubt this happens, but if it did you can bet our FO would get the best of it in terms of value.
The rumors I've been seeing posted all over the place have leaned towards Millen is having trouble getting value out of the pick. He's talked to a bunch of teams and nobody has bowled him over or come close to it. It must be a very sad time right now for Matt Millen. He's exercising his 5th top 10 pick in a row and in the process he has driven his hometown team into the dirt in a way that is almost unparallelled in NFL history. The team he took over was coming off of a 9-7 season. The franchise had wobbled back and forth between respectability (8 or 9 wins) and less (5 wins) for a half a decade after their strong run of the early 90's. Since Millen took over these are the records: 2-14, 3-13, 5-11, 6-10, 5-11, 3-13. Folks, thats as bad as it gets in the NFL. That's even worse than the Cardinals. Imagine that you took over the Jets coming off of the season they just had and you put those numbers up right in a row. That's where he's at.
I doubt the rumor is true, but from Detroit's standpoint, they play the Tampa 2, and they would love a Vilma type player. Marinelli probably has talked to Herm, who talked up Vilma. My question is this: didn't the Lions draft a Vilma clone - Ernie Sims - last year. Why would they want a similar player? Then again, maybe I can answer my own question: Matt Millen. Subsequent post at that website listed in the initial post: More…5:05pm, Third team is involved and Jets WR Justin McCareins, plus later round swaps … source with Jets also says Adrian Peterson’s HS coach was a recent visitor to Weeb Ewbank Hall, the Jets HQ … trade not nearly done, but Vilma is gone…
I'd agree it's somewhat unlikely, but I believe Tannenbaum could fleece Millen. If the Jets can fool Millen into an offer too good to pass up, I could see it happening.
From the jolly spectator 5:05pm, Third team is involved and Jets WR Justin McCareins, plus later round swaps … source with Jets also says Adrian Peterson’s HS coach was a recent visitor to Weeb Ewbank Hall, the Jets HQ … trade not nearly done, but Vilma is gone…
:breakdance:  :drunk: Now we get that pick with a trade that includes McCareins too? Damn we must have pictures on every other GM in the league.
It's a cute site. It's Lions oriented apparently from the ads. My guess is this is a bit of pre-draft tomfoolery designed to lighten the spirits of the oppressed motown masses.
